Does anyone think our lack of NFL OL

may hinder our recruiting at the position.? Mason Trotter(he’s tough, undersized)...seemed to be the 1st guy off the bench. It’s puzzling to me. Besides Tyler Shatley(utility OL) I’m hard pressed to think of a good NFL OL in the last decade or 2 from Clemson. Heck!!! Our “Best” in a long time was Mitch Hyatt and he didn’t get drafted. Just an honest ? Before you get defensive. Jackson Carmen will get drafted., but IMO will not be a left tackle in the league( he’ll move inside). You ask any of these High School kids.,what attracts them to a school( besides “the family feel” and winning)...advancing players in the NFL is super important- This position group needs take a big step forward if we’re able to beat top notch teams. I guess we’ll see in Charlotte against the Dawgs. Go Tigers!! R.R.

Offensive line recruiting has been really strong over the last 2-3 classes.
5 star: Tristan Leigh 4 star: Walker Parks, Paul Tchio, Mitchell Mayes, Bryn Tucker, Marcus Tate, Ryan Linthicum, Dietrick Pennington, Collin Sadler, Blake Miller 3 star: John Williams, Trent Howard
The lack of NFL OL development has been a problem but we that will change in the near future.

That was a lucid, well thought out answer. I agree that it doesn't seem to be hurting our recruiting, but I will be glad when we start developing the NFL caliber players at the OL positions.

In the past several years it seems we have targeted leaner more athletic types of Olinemen than just big hole stuffers. But the size of our guys I think definitely plays a role in their nfl chances. Most are undersized and overlooked.

I believe that with the style of offense that we run at Clemson, we do need quick footed O Line, but we can have that with the 6'4"-6'5" type guys that can carry 300 plus pounds pretty fast/quick. But that is the type of O Lineman that our coaches should search the hardest to find, and they don't have to 4-5 star player coming in bc, Dabo says that we are a development type FB program, and we find the Clemson type young men, and develop them into talented FB players. That is what he said was his biggest reason of not going after guys in the portal!!!!

The last genuine NFL left tackle we had drafted, if memory serves, was Chris Hairston. I remember seeing him at the Shrine Bowl back in the day. He was an undersized converted basketball player, a 6'5", 250-ish pound bundle of awkward arms and legs, if memory served, a late bloomer, and Clemson was dragging bodies at the position. Brad Scott walked across the practice field during Shrine Bowl workouts, took one look, and immediately walked away. Our then-recruiting coordinator David Blackwell, who was also going to scout him, passed Scott with an apparently quizzical look on his face. Scott said curtly: "Offer."
I remember watching Hairston sort of ambling around like Bambi for most of the Shrine Bowl. He didn't really seem to have a clue what he was doing, mind, but at one point I noticed Hairston, like 50+ yards downfield trying to block for a screen play. He'd beaten one of his wide receivers downfield; the dude could absolutely run like a deer. Five years later he was 6'6"+, 330 or so pounds, and getting drafted into the League.
I haven't seen that mojo repeated again. If you know how that works, you're smarter than I am.

We just had John Simpson and Tremayne Anchrum drafted as guards. The needle is pointing in right direction.

I'm sure it has in the past, but with the championships that we have won without having elite O Lineman, that could be the reason that the talent of our OL is picking up. If a team can win two NC without elite, or high 4 star talent on the O Line, they are seeing, or believing they can be on a championship team coming to Clemson. I would bet everything that I own, that coaches dirty recruit us by telling elite O lineman about our lack of putting OL players in the NFL. And that's only bc we haven't had NFL talented O lineman on our O Line. Since Dabo, we have a couple in the NFL.
Trust me when I say that I'm not trying to scuff up anybody's Tiger stripes when I say that Robbie Caldwell has severed our Tigers well since coming to Clemson, but I think that it would serve us better if we had a well known younger OL coach that could get into actually demonstrating to/with his players like a BV does with his. I mean Robbie is close to retirement age, and I just don't think that he is much of a hands on coach anymore with those younglings!!!!

on recruiting. Opposing coaches use that every they chance they get. Its one of the reasons I think it would be smart to get someone that can bring credibility to coaching and developing OL for the NFL.
Having that would help recruiting better OL and add credibility. But we know Dabo is loyal to his folks and its hard to be critical of him considering what he has accomplished here.
Time will tell.

The Tigers have had a number of good offensive linemen in the last several years. The problem is, they leave Clemson as good offensive linemen four years later. They DO NOT develop into big stage players. It’s obvious to me why this is factual. It’s also obvious to me that it is a problem easily resolved. Pull the trigger Dabo!
