I'm going to post this again for the day crowd...

Feb 7, 2022, 8:25 AM

as if anyone really cares what I say or think, but I just need to vent, so please indulge me for a second.

After Saturday's debacle in Atlanta (which I did attended), I am done. I'm sick and tired of it, I am sick and tired of being sick and tired.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, I thought Brownell was a bad hire from day one and I though he should have been fired after the 2014-15 season. Yet the University continues to give him pay raises and extensions for middling to subpar results.

I will not spend another dime purchasing Clemson basketball tickets or attend another game until Brad Brownell has been fired or announces his resignation.

If the University doesn't give a $#!7 (and clearly they don't), then why should I !?!?!

OK...end of rant !!!

This season is not shaping up well at all….

Feb 7, 2022, 8:47 AM

I have a fairly realistic view of Clemson hoops.
General expectation is to make the big dance every 2-3 years and be pleasantly surprised when we do well (like the sweet 16 team a few years ago). In other years, when there is a ‘young team’ or whatever, seeing progress or a NIT bid might do. This view is based on the ACC being strong and understanding that we are not going to be Duke or UNC, but that we can be competitive and have seasons where we are in the top tier or top half of the conference.
To be where we are this season is disappointing. The conference is down overall this year (pretty sure it will rebound). We had opportunities early in non-conference to win games against solid teams, but did not get it done. This particular team has plenty of experience…and I think is a team with some decent talent…but they simply have not put it together consistently at all.
So…12-10 (4-7) is where we sit. Even a really good run down the stretch to get to .500 in conference, which looks like wishful thinking, is likely not enough this year for Coach Brownell.
Bottom line is that this year’s team should be in the top half of the conference (the top 7 at least). Losses to BC (at home!) and GT are just not going to cut it.
My guess is they’ll make some noise on the home stand this week…seems to be plausible, but then go squander the momentum elsewhere once they are on the road again.
I’m rooting for them to be successful…yet it appears that time for change may be on the horizon.

The problem is that the general expectation that you lined out is the general expectation it seems for most including the administration. My grandfather used to tell me that you encourage what you tolerate. Why cant "why not us" apply to basketball as well?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

My point is we are not really even meeting that expectation….

Feb 8, 2022, 12:00 AM

We have an experienced team. There is some talent. The conference is down.
No way we should be where we are this season at this point.
We made the tourney last season and returned enough to at least make a run at it again…but it has not materialized. And there’s really not much you can point to outside of Hall’s solid development that gives a lot of hope for next season.

If it makes you feel any better I care. I care about Brad Brownell. I don't want him fired because I would not know what to do with his bobble head statue that I got for Christmas a while back.
I guess I could keep it along with my Jack Leggett autographed baseball, or my Tommy Bowden auto graphed cap. I'm just glad I don't have anything autographed by Brad.
When it comes to autographs, it's not like I have anything of importance like a Michael Jordan signed jersey but I do have a signed autography photo of a former Dallas Cowboy player who made it personal by including my name.
But enough about autographs. I fully agree that a change is needed.

People who want change in the basketball program have one tool to make the change happen; money.
Quit buying tickets and if you have season tickets don’t go to the games. Don’t sell your season tickets, you’ll just have to eat the for the time being.
Because money talks and all else walks.

What about

when all the local UNC and Duke fans buy up all the tickets this week and create sell outs?

Re: What about

Feb 7, 2022, 9:57 AM

They can't buy what you don't sell. That's his point about not selling your tickets.

Although, that doesn't put any hurt on the department financially. You've already paid for them.

Like you I'm tuning out. If there was any consistency to this team it would be one thing but this solid one game and debaalce the next is too much. There was a stretch at GT that was just ridiculous. Just totally bury yourself with one bad play after another

Said it multiple times and I feel like I am a die hard Clemson fan but I have not tuned in for a least 5 years. Me and my wife now were talking yesterday and she said you have not watched Clemson basketball since we have been together and that has been 4 years. I feel like Clemson does not care about bball at least the coaching side of it. We did better before all the LJ upgrades so I’m guessing facilities are not the issue. I wish things were different and hope they will be soon, but as of right now I would go watch soccer in sub 32 temps before I can back what we have going on right now.

In the first half of that game alone...

Feb 7, 2022, 10:13 AM [ in reply to Re: I'm going to post this again for the day crowd... ]

Clemson had a 7:00 minute scoring drought that included at least six turnovers and a 24 - 2 GT run.

Re: In the first half of that game alone...

Feb 7, 2022, 10:21 AM

Yep.

We scored at the 12:54 mark.
We scored again at the 5:25 mark.

You can look at the Game Flow charts and almost always find a long, flat line for us. To me, this is one of the most telling signs that Brownell needs to go. It's a decade-long problem, he's never found a way to fix it, and he cannot coach his way out of a scoring slump mid-game.

Everyone talks about his Xs and Os...why is it so impossible for him to call a timeout strategically and design a couple of plays to break a slump? It's unbearable to watch.

That’s what you call not being prepared mentally to play by your coach.

I LOVE basketball

Feb 7, 2022, 10:02 AM

Which is why I quit watching Clemson basketball.

For whatever reason CU is committed to mediocrity in basketball. I'm an alum and was there in the Horace Grant, Elden Campbell, Dale Davis years. Littlejohn rocked and nobody wanted to play us at home. Don't tell me we can't be great in basketball.

The "if only the fans would support the team" crowd has it bass ackwards. Commit to winning, hire the appropriate people, and the fans will come [back].

If they can't do that, I'm not sure why I should commit time, energy, and money to watching them.

My 2 cents - maybe only worth that, but I get the rant completely.

Maybe we could lure The Zen Master (Phil Jackson) out of

Feb 7, 2022, 10:27 AM

retirement. At least then, we would have an offensive system to run, instead of just passing the ball aimlessly around the perimeter until the shot clock winds down, most of the time.

(I know, no chance we could get Phil Jackson, butt, OOOMMMMMMM, it would be a nice thing to dream of.)

Edit: Did you know Phil actually has THIRTEEN Championship rings? Two from his playing years with the Knicks, six from coaching the Bulls, and five from coaching the Lakers. I didn't think ANYBODY had more rings than Bill Russell, who has ELEVEN.

I agree but there will be others on this board and probably ADM that will say give him one more year. If the ADM had carried about BB they would have let him go a long time ago. It was obvious to most he did not have the pieces of the puzzle to win at BB on this level. I question our ADM ability to know a good good coach when they see one. They have let this same movie play much too long. Thanks for your post. I had my GT moment a long time ago.

It has got to be a money deal or lack there of. No way the admin is not getting hammered with correspondence regarding our ladies and mens bball programs underachieving… at least from the fans perspective.
