How about a list of the coaches you WOULD'VE picked over Dabo in 2008 ?

I'm glad I didn't get to make the choice myself

Apr 22, 2016, 7:45 AM

because I would have screwed it up and went after someone else. Can't keep looking back except to see how I messed up and what I could do to avoid making that mistake again. BTW, they proved "they" could do it without my input too.

However, the mistake was not made so, keep moving forward into the happiness and sunshine that is Clemson football.

Me too brother . Nobody that tell the truth would ever have said in 2008 that Dabo Swinney was the fuy we should give the HC job to .
I didn't know that much about him and honestly aside from the rumors that he was a tireless recruiter It seemed a spurious choice to me when they removed the interim label after he layed it on Spurrier in his first taste of the rivalry game .
Love being wrong here , dude has been an absolute homerun in every single facet .

It was a gamble

Apr 22, 2016, 9:48 AM

Everyone knows it now, and everyone knew it then.

I mean every coaching hire is a gamble, but this one was especially so. But folks behind the scenes, folks who had more information and had more interaction with him, were seeing a much greater upside then those of us without the information had.

Maybe in some ways it helped we had previously had success with a younger first-time head coach in Ford and thus the fanbase was willing to buy in more quickly or suspend doubt a bit longer.

I wasn't against the hire because I don't pretend to have the information necessary to make a judgment beforehand. Of course many of us saw it as a potential emotional hire after the end of his interim term, but in the end the gamble has paid off handsomely.

And one of the greatest things about that, other than the obvious on and off the field success, is that when you gamble on someone like we have it builds loyalty.

We, quite simply, backed the right horse.

What a time to be a Tiger.

Although he probably wasn't my first choice I was pulling for him to get the job

In 2008 I was one of the doubters. I just did not know enough about who CDS was and what he was capable of. I figured that we could give him a chance and see what happened. My Mom, who is the biggest Clemson fan I know, told me I was wrong....that Dabo was going to be one of the great ones. As we all know, she was absolutely correct.

For some reason the name Razz something keeps coming to mind. Dogging Dabo choice constantly. Hadn't heard much lately though..

There were a number of Coots and Coot sympathizers on here beating Dabo and/or the AD up .
18wheeler, MotorCityBengal and Razzmatazz among those most vocal . I joined TNet initially in 2005 , but rarely logged on and rarely read anything . Lost that account around 2010 and then rejoined as TD23 in 2011 and have been active ever since .
Funny thing though , since 2013 the 3 above sure have gone silent . Maybe they done lawst dat password what make ya able to tawk ?

She would NOT shut up about it - knowing her fragile ego, I

Apr 22, 2016, 8:43 AM [ in reply to Re: List of Coaches I would pick over Dabo Swinney,,,, ]

would BET she is STILL willing to go on and on about how we STILL wasted 2 years or more while CDS got "on-the-job training" . . . that was always her fall back.

Never mind the fact that the whole time CDS was building Rome - from the inside out.

In hindsight - don't know how we could be where we are right now if CDS ( or anybody else, for that matter ) triedto do it any other way.

Brad Brownell: Only Larry freaking Shyatt has a WORSE overall winning percentage among Clemson basketball coaches since 1975. Let that sink in. It's Larry Shyatt & then Brad Brownell.

I admit I didn't have a dog in that fight , but I did want Randy Shannon hired as dc and openly criticized the Brent hire.

Re: List of Coaches I would pick over Dabo Swinney,,,,

Dabo seems to have answered all the questions marks some of us had. I didn't have many, but I was thinking we needed to go after a bigger name at the time. Boy was I wrong in that thought. Not only has Dabo been an excellent coach, but he has built a brand of expectations, both on the field and in the classroom and in the character expectations of our players and staff that are second to none. Sure we have a few who mess up, but they are dealt with swiftly and fairly, and punished and rewarded appropriately. All said, we made the best possible choice. Period, end of story!

he was introduced at our interim head coach.

Re: List of Coaches I would pick over Dabo Swinney,,,,

Apr 22, 2016, 12:40 PM

At this point, there aren't very many coaches in the NCAA I'd want over Dabo. There are lots of talented guys out there, obviously Saban & Meyer come to mind, along with maybe Art Briles and Jim Harbaugh. I don't like Briles as a human, but the fact that he's turned Baylor into a perpetual contender is admirable. Harbaugh is another guy I'm not a big fan of, but he's as good of a coach as there is in the country.

I think overall, we find ourselves in a very enviable position. People could make arguments for many coaches over Dabo, but at this point in time there's nobody I'd rather have coaching this football team.

I didn't know much about him but he was "my guy" when he made the punter go back on the field and sprint back to the sideline. That focus on 100% effort is what I've always looked for in my Tigers, win or lose. Not in my wildest dreams did I think he would do what he's done. It's a great time to be a Tiger.
