Swinney likes to say,

"most of the kids in the portal were not plaing where they were." That really is meaningless for a couple of reasons.

1. They could have been behind a great player and did not play. However, they could still be great themselves or at least much better than we have at the position.

2. Mike Jones Was in the portal and he played when he was at Clemson. There are others in that category as well. Bama just got LSU starting db from this past season.

Yeah I get sick of the ignorance spewed about the kids entering the portal. "They don't want to work hard" "They're not committed" "They want everything given to them" "They just want money". It's all horse sh......

Are there some kids in the portal with that attitude? Sure. But not all and more than likely not even most. Most of these kids are talented kids sitting behind more talented kids. They want to further their career just as any of us interview for better jobs and for the same reasons. More opportunity, more growth, better bosses, better location, better facilities, easier ladder, better people and of course more money. Doesn't mean we want anything given to us. Doesn't mean we don't want to work hard.

There have been a ton of portal kids since 2018 who went to a team and entered a competition right away. Some won it, some didn't. Some won it and went on to be game breakers. Some are now game breakers in the NFL.

Drop the BS excuses and adapt.

I'll trust the process of a guy that built a culture that:

Dec 16, 2021, 10:46 AM

1. graduates an extremely high % of platers
2. recruits itself
3. has been to 6 CFP's
4. won 2 natty's
5. builds coaches from within to become desired by almost everyone with a vacancy
6. builds a culture where no one wants to leave, as evidenced by coaches turning down other offers
7. serves young mens hearts, not their talent, which leads to success in multiple areas

not a guy eating cheeto's and playing X-Box

Not sure why so many can't see that and have a little faith! Hell if my wife doubted me as much as some of these doubt Dabo, I would leave! Let's hope some of these doubters leave and not Dabo, at least we know what we have in him!

It doesn't have anything to do with faith or disbelief in Dabo. I don't believe either of the posters above were questioning Dabo. 81-85 simply disagreed with his and most others statement on the portal kids. The blanket statements are false. I don't believe for one minute any of the Clemson players entered the portal because they are lazy and no good.

There are some good kids in the portal. Does it need to be fixed, yes. Dabo laid out a nice plan for how to regulate it.

I think if you want to see Dabo's hesitation on the portal

Dec 16, 2021, 11:16 AM

look no further than our recruiting process. We vet kids more than any other school in the country. A Clemson offer is slow to come, and it means something. That is done to protect the culture, and it has been great.

You can't really do that with portal kids... at least not the way we recruit.

I do have faith in Dabo…

Dec 16, 2021, 2:19 PM [ in reply to Re: I'll trust the process of a guy that built a culture that: ]

I think he’ll begin to use the portal because he has no choice. I think Dabo thought Clemson’s culture was such that he would lose very few players to the portal. Unfortunately that is not the case. We’re losing a bunch and not replacing them which is leaving our roster thin. He really has no choice and I think you’ll see him adjust.
As long as the portal is in play it can’t be a one way street for a team if you expect to stay competitive. The other posters are correct that there are plenty of talented players that could help Clemson and fit in fine. Heck 9 of the players are from Clemson.

Half the folks on here just fuss about anything and everything. If Dabo raided the portal they would say "All the players we signed from the portal proves Dabo sucks at High School recruiting .". They gonna gripe and moan about everything. They are miserable people not happy except when they making someone else miserable.

2 problems with your logic.

1. In the past we have wanted the great player, not the player behind the great player. We had a roster full of "players behind the great player".

2. You chose a very poor example. Mike Jones left because he was about to lose a lot of playing time to Trenton Simpson. He split time at Clemson and had about 25 tackles in 2020. He was a starting LB for LSU and he currently has 31 tackles on the season. He got passed because wasn't progressing greatly as a player. Even with less depth, Clemson wants players that are going to come in and be able to be productive. I wouldn't call 31 tackles from a LB spot productive.

Mike Jones was a great locker room guy at Clemson and I'm sure is the same for LSU. The reality is that changing schemes and locations and those sort of things is difficult and it often takes time for players to play at their ability level. If he stays another year, he will likely be more productive in year 2 at LSU.

Clemson is currently short on depth and may now need to dip into the portal for a few players who aren't at the typical level of Clemson's recruits, but to look backwards and say Clemson has been missing something just isn't true.

I agree with you.

Look no further than Joe Burrow who transferred and became the first overall draft pick and a NFL starting quarterback.

This was also the case for

Jalen Hurts - Alabama to Oklahoma
Justin Fields - UGA to Ohio State
Kyler Murray - A&M to Oklahoma

At one point Alabama had 3 first round QBs on the team. (Tua, Jones, and Hurts). I don't blame the players for leaving.

I will say one thing it want be the portal or recruiting down the road that hurts our program. The NIL will be what causes us to not be competitive with the big schools with money. Texas has opened up a whole new can of worms.

Except Jalen Hurts was a 2nd rounder not a 1st rounder..

"most of the kids"
the salient point is most...not all but most.
Dabo is talking about the overall impact of the portal and to MOST kids it will not end well. He knows full well that there are exceptions. If we get the UVA center then you may say that is an I told ya so, but more likely an exception.

Most had a scholie to get an education and they are chasing something that has no guarantee to work out from the portal.

So most will have a problem making the portal a detriment not a benefit.

You are kinda of wrong on this one.

This is where the tampering comes in play. Higher caliber players don't just enter the portal for all to recruit. The player reaches out to a few schools via other players (who speak to coaches) ... then they enter the portal already knowing the school they are going to.

So while it's like 1900 players currently in the portal.... 1600 weren't playing where they were at smaller schools. It's 300 kids that played significantly but half of them already know the schools they are going to. So now you roughly 150 kids left, which many of them won't start for Clemson anyway so it's not just a bunch of talent sitting in there. Look at how the same few teams are basically swapping players.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

What part of the word "MOST" do you not understand?

Dec 16, 2021, 2:36 PM

Don't call the statement "meaningless" unless you comprehend the definition.
