If you're a Veteran let us know so we can honor you!

Nov 11, 2019, 8:18 AM

I would like to know who is a Veteran on this board so we can honor your bravery!

What branch and when did you serve?

I honor you for being a true hero! Enjoy your day today!

I am not a fan of Golden Corral or buffets in general but if you're a veteran they are giving away dinner for free tonight to honor you!

I don't mind sharing my most recent family tradition:

Grandfather - Marine WWII / Bronze Star, Pelilu
Dad - USN (retired) / Corpsman, Vietnam / Purple Heart (2)
Me - USN / 80-89
Son - USAF / 18 years and counting!

Military in our family goes much further back...seems we look for trouble! :)

US Air Force 1967-1971. I received my commission in the Tillman Hall Auditorium, and my 4 AF years are the most memorable of my life.

Most chain restaurants offer free dinners to veterans today. But, some don't advertise it like GC, and you have to ask. Our local Applebee's, O'Charley's, and Texas Roadhouse has free meals for vets today and won't be mobbed like GC.

Family Service

Nov 11, 2019, 10:04 AM

US Army CPT Armor 1989-1997 - Europe, Balkans

Grandfather Lloyd - WWII Navy DE USS Chatelain - Was in Escort Carrier Group that captured U505 and is now displayed in Chicago museum. Was primary sonar petty officer during the depth charge run that caused U505 to surface for capture. Most gentle kind man, lived to 101. Lord I wish I had spent more time with him. He couldn't even tell the story until near 2014.

Grandfather Fredrick - WWII Navy - LCVP Operator participated in island hopping campaign, told incredible stories of the sheer horror of Kamikaze attacks that haunted him till he died at 91. I still have his service .45 and holster that he carried 43'-45' Also have an Arisaka 7.7mm with the chrysanthemum still intact that he was able to bring back after his Higgins boat was hit and stranded. Also survived Typhoon Cobra of great fame in the Pacific. Another great unassuming man who then came back and worked for GM for 30+ years retiring as a line manager in Flint, Michigan. I wish I had 1/2 that man's grit and resolve.

Father in Law Bob - Vietnam US Army Cav - Fought as a Troop Commander and Platoon Leader in numerous operations with 11ACR. To this day won't talk to his wife or daughters about it. Occasionally, I can get him to talk to me, a former tank officer, when I get some Beam in him. As he is aging and fighting the effects of a mild stroke he is slowly passing along his records, letters, memorabilia to me to share with the next generation. Reading his DD214 and award citations I don't know how he is still here with us.

Such a great day of remembrance. I don't know if our nation still makes people like this. My experiences pale to theirs and their ability to then persevere.

Prayers to my lost and wounded brothers who aren't here or all here anymore.

Sorry this is definitely TL:DR but I want to honor them.

So I am not a veteran but I really wanted to honor my family members and their service.

I'll start with my father, he was in the U.S. Army from 1980-1984 and he was stationed in Germany.

Next is my father-in-law, he was in the USAF from 1982-2005 and retired. He was deployed to South Korea.

I love both of those men and are both great influences in my life and my father helped create the man that I am today.

I have one more family member I would like to recognize for his service. My Grandfather. I only knew him for 7 years of my life unfortunately. He was taken to soon from this earth. I love this man so much and almost all I know of him is from stories and memories. Where do I start, he was in the Navy from the year he graduated high school in 1948. He was very good at Morse code and his communication skills. Unfortunately, I don't remember or know one can seem to remember the name of the operation that he was in for three days the ship he was on and two other ships made there way through the Indian ocean completely silent. I wish I knew more about this but I do know he and all the other brave men got an accommodation from president Eisenhower. Also, in 1957-1958 he was apart of a top secret operation (at the time) called Operation Deep Freeze. This was in Antarctica and was sent down there with a research team. Papa I love you so much and everything you did to pave the way for our great family. R.I.P. Papa your grandson, Jordan aka Egburt.

I wonder how many of you may have served with each other (on the same ship, etc.) and didn't event realize it until you read this thread. Just curious.

TattedCop®, thanks for starting this thread to honor our Tnet veterans and giving me the opportunity to TU them all. I was curious about your avatar. You didn't mention service but your avatar is POW/MIA. Would you care to share the significance?

Thank you to all TNet veterans for your service!

Yes sir, I was not in the Military myself but I am a retired Police Officer and I continue to work in Public Safety field and have been in the field for over 25 years now. My dad was a POW held by the Viet Kong until he was able to escape with other prisoners in 1971 relatively unharmed. I fully support all of our Military and I am a huge supporter of the POW's and those that paid the ultimate sacrifice. I love our Military Men and Women and will always support the brave men and women of our Armed Forces until the day I take my last breath.

Grandfather served in the Navy during WW2 and my dad was USMC platoon 345 from Paris Island In 1971-74 and was stationed in Okinawa. They were indeed great men and they are sorely missed! Man they had to sit through some terrible Tiger football back then! ??

This is one of those threads that I truly enjoy seeing. No "Poasts" or "Serius Qweshuns". Just a group of people who share an exceptional connection, that of service before self. No matter the branch, it makes me proud to be among your ranks. Semper Fidelis and God Bless America!

A little late getting here. US Navy 1974 to 1978. USS Jesse L.Brown DE (FF)1089. Definitely not a hero, but two brothers that did serve in Viet Nam. One in The USMC, flying CH53's I think, and one The USN. To me they are the real heros.

Deployed to Vietnam in 1965-1966 during the initial Vietnam build-up after President Johnson made the decision to send combat troops. Activated an ammunition company at Ft. Bragg and deployed to Nam in October 1965. Later in life as an army civilian in Missile Systems Research and Development I was extensively involved and deployed to Israel when Saddam Hussein started shooting Scud missiles into Israel during Desert Storm (1991). Also supported later operations during Iraqi Freedom, and Enduring Freedom during those incursions into Iraq.
