IF you were a top QB & got a $1,000,000 NIL Deal, Would You

Dec 15, 2022, 7:13 PM

be able to concentrate on all your many football duties including practices, interviews, etc...as well as hit the books & attend classes..date if you had a sweetheart..

AND dream of being filthy while sleeping or awake while figuring out which car or boat you're gonna buy asap..

while knowing you've got to perform at high levels on Saturdays on the field home & away..

plus make ads or attend meetings or shows for that NIL donor or lose it.

Heck, I'd be a wreck focusing 24/7 on whether the Ferrari was Red or Silver.

RED!

I don't know when it comes to buying things that I could afford bc I don't just go buy something. I have to first think about it for a while. Then I have to go look around until I find something I really like, then I have to read everything I can find about it, then go back and kick the tires a few times around. Then go home and think about it some more. I never just go out and buy something like a car just bc it looks good, smells good, and drives good, I have to think about is this what I really want for a few days before I'll buy.

If you have a desire to play in the NFL, yes because the money is 10 times that.

Not a chance when I was 18. That said, I think DW4, TL16 could have managed to and be the same person they were. I actually think Cade could as well. All have values and answer to a higher power. All are mature and wise beyond their years. But there not many.

Its safe to say that DW4 spent money without consulting his values.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yes, because he was the victm of a cash grab scheme...

Dec 15, 2022, 9:04 PM

he's a horrible human being. You got some high standards; I hope you're never chosen as the mark for some elaborate grift. Maybe someday you'll find it within yourself to forgive DW; then he'll be able to get a good night's sleep.

idk I'd like to give it shot though ****

Bill, you are right on target. Especially considering you are talking about 17 and 18 years old and their parents, relatives and friends are influencing these young men. Bad decisions could easily be made and all of this is a lot to juggle for these very young men.

Chris Weinke did.

He signed a very nice contract with baseball out of HS. He took his signing bonus, I think it was about 600K, and invested it wisely. (His dad was very successful in commercial real estate development. He was worth a few million dollars by the time his baseball career ended and he came to FSU.

His roommates joked about how he would read the Wall Street Journal every morning while drinking his morning cup of coffee. He stayed at FSU all 4 years, got his degree, won the Heisman, played for the national championship and kept his nose out of trouble.

That's not exactly the same as NIL. But, it does point out that having a bunch of money does not mean you can't handle it along with your football life and your personal life.

And, if you want to say he was 25 and more mature when he came to FSU, then go back to when he graduated from HS. He was 18 and playing minor league baseball. He didn't squander his bonus. He invested it wisely (with good counsel) and more than tripled its value.

So, it is possible.

It would be interesting to know if DJ's NIL deal and resulting changes in his life because of it had anything to do with his performance decline.

It’s a legitimate concern. I’ve seen this played out over and over. One of my friends from my youth I was in a car wreck and he got $100,000 when he turned 18, this was 30 years ago. A nice house cost you about 60k in our hometown. He went bananas and actually ended up in jail about a year later. Another person close to me, a woman who had been broke pretty much her entire young adulthood , inherited about $200,000 when her mother unexpectedly died fairly young, she too got on drugs, lost her job etc. etc. it was terrible to watch. Some people, especially when they’re fairly young, just can’t handle the money.

When I was 18, heck no. Not unless my parents took control of the money. If I would have been in control of it at 18 it would have been gone in a year or so.

Dec 16, 2022, 8:37 AM

Once Uncle Sam gets his teeth in it, yikes what 30%?? You have $660k left? Depending on where you live, that might but a 1980's 1200 sft ranch house in a non-gated community.

Or, a nice car or truck and you might have $600k, go big and you might have $400k left.

Welcome to adulting.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I could have handled it at 18

Dec 16, 2022, 8:44 AM

I agree that in no way you would have been able to deal with it.

Sayin’ just because you couldn’t handle it, that should not adversely impact me and my path.

Also, I’m still p1ssEd you sold the 14’ Whaler. I know you have your reasons, but I miss her.
