If you don't believe the SEC hype is hurting our recruiting

Feb 5, 2013, 7:00 AM

at this point, then you really have your head in the sand. Every single decommit we had is SEC bound. Almost every player we "almost had" is SEC bound.

We lost Adams to Auburn. A team who just went 2-10, fired the entire staff, and put a new staff together just 1.5 months ago. A head coach who is barely more proven than our OC. A team who has been in shambles. If Auburn was in the ACC, no chance they pull in 2 5 star recruits, maybe 3, and a great class.

Heck, if that happened to Clemson, we'd be lucky to sign 12 like in 2009.

We lost D Robinson to a program who doesn't even have a QB that can throw the ball right after the world witnessed Nuk Hopkins have the game of his life.

We lost Jenkins to a team with a brand new coaching staff when his own flesh and blood is playing at Clemson with an elite offense.

Lost Fullwood, an elite WR, to Florida. Lost North, another elite WR, to Tennessee and a brand new staff.

I could almost guarantee you that if we were in the SEC, we would've landed some of these prospects. I know the Daniel and Nkemdiche losses were different, but some of these others would've been locks IMO given our high powered offense and needs on defense. Immediate playing time available.

We still have a fine class, and it's great that we expect more. We just came off the best 2 seasons in over 20 years. Unfortunately, it just doesn't mean that much because of the SEC hype. We're just gonna have to continue to dominate SEC teams when we play and hope that someone else wins a National Championship at some point.

We recruit directly against the SEC

Feb 5, 2013, 7:08 AM

The only teams in the south we compete with in recruiting are FSU and the SEC. It has been that way for years. Sure it is hurting us that they can use the ACC against us but the extent can't be determined because we don't often directly compete against the other conferences.

My point is that these teams have nothing going for them...

Auburn and UT are in shambles.

And one of our best recruiting years came after our last losing season. Players want to play early and can see where a program has that potential.

Ding ding, we have a winner!

Feb 5, 2013, 7:53 AM

PT is a major factor. When a staff can promise you pt at a place that has a lot of history and tradition, these kids can easily believe the line that they're the one piece to the puzzle that will restore the glory.

So were we after the 6-7 year

Feb 5, 2013, 8:53 AM [ in reply to My point is that these teams have nothing going for them... ]

Adams was originally between us and Auburn. Lawson was always Auburn.

Atlanta and west of I-75 is pretty much Auburn territory. Northwest Ga is Alabama's recruiting ground.

The players we recruit are not likely to be lost to Wake or Kentucky. And Adams to Auburn is just speculation, nothing more. When you can tell kids they can play football and just need to get through three years of basket weaving,it matters.

Feb 5, 2013, 7:15 AM

Where else do you expect them to go? Most of the guys you are talking about are from the immediate region with the exception of Daniels. So it is logical that they will choose a team at least on Clemson's level, and one in the same geographical area. If they don't take FSU then it has to be SEC. K. Fuller went to VT so we don't lose all of them to the SEC.

But our "big name" recruits came from NY, Hawaii, MD,

Feb 5, 2013, 7:30 AM

TL Hanna, and DW Daniel. We did get Dye from GA and Kearse from FL but that's it.

I don't have a problem going out of region. Just saying the big time prospects in the south are going SEC. It's hurting FSU also.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You're nailing it this morning, brah. Absolutely right.

Feb 5, 2013, 7:56 AM [ in reply to Re: If you don't believe the SEC hype is hurting our recruiting ]

The fact that we're battling the $EC top half for recruits and not Wake and NC State is a testament to how far we've come in a short while. We used to not get a sniff from these kids not long ago.

Feb 5, 2013, 7:16 AM

And if you look at our recruits, we now have 18 who were mostly also recruited by the SEC. That's puts Clemson, as one school, winning the battle against 14 SEC schools!!
Been going on since Frank Howards days and most southern boys are going to the SEC or ACC so where is the surprise.
Clemson does well against 14 to 1 odds.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

2014 is CLEMSONS yr!!

Feb 5, 2013, 7:37 AM

bank it.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Look at where the players are from.

Feb 5, 2013, 7:39 AM

When you recruit guys from Georgia, Florida, and Alabama, its no surprise that they are also considering UGA/Auburn/Bama/Florida. Of course the perceived strength of the SEC is to their advantage, but every school has their advantages and disadvantages.

Feb 5, 2013, 7:47 AM

What these young men need to grasp, is that you could go to Furman and make it big in the pro's. The RAVENS had maybe 2 or 3 players that were from the SEC, which leaves many players on that team that are not from the almighty SEC.

Re: If you don't believe the SEC hype is hurting our recruiting

Feb 5, 2013, 8:00 AM

That's true enough, but you can't go to Furman and win a BCS championship. Furman clearly gets leftovers after the big boys are finished feasting. For one of them to make it to the NFL means EVERYBODY missed on him.

At the present time, Clemson is coming in 4th in a College Pride photo contest to win prizes for the owner of a Clemson themed Trike, losing out to OU and Ala. Roll Tide and a kid. The winning pic also wins $2000 donation to the represented college, so where is the "simple" pride Tiger fans.
