New Story: Venables happy with his defense this spring despite big numbers Saturday

Venables happy with his defense this spring despite big numbers Saturday

Defensive coordinator Brent Venables didn’t seem concerned with his group’s performance following Saturday’s Orange & White Game, instead joking with reporters that he picked the wrong team to coach as the White defeated the Venables’ Orange group 35-24.

Coaching them up Coach Venables!!

Apr 12, 2015, 4:36 PM

This is by far in my opinion the best and most intense best college defensive coach I've seen in a long long time. He knows what makes each one of them tick and he coaches each player according to what drives them. He's a players coach. I would have loved to have a coach that intense when I played. He sells it, they buy in and two star guys become four star guys and four star guys become 5 stars! He drives them all to encourage and drive each other to the max of their talent.

Dabo's best move was to develop a relationship with Vendables and hire him away from OKLAHOMA! 40-6

That's turning up the volume!

I love the fact he has them hold a little energy until 3rd down and he's screaming jumping up and down winding the volume up!

Defense wins championships!!

Go Tigers!!

If Coach Venables is happy with what he is observing, then things must be good. Might be some problems depth wise, but he has all summer before fall camp for the.players to work it out. When pre season practice starts, he should know what he has. You have several coming in after graduation, and they will add to the competition for the positions that need depth. He will find out who hit the weights and worked out on the field, and probably have all kinds of options to choose from when the season starts. I don't think there will be much, if any drop off from last year and will have a very strong D. GO TIGERS!!!!

If we're an injury away from being a liability at LB,

Apr 12, 2015, 8:01 PM

was Register just not cutting it at LB?

This coach obviously knows what he's doing...just thought Register would become a monster at LB...

Register is just to big to play LB if I'm not mistaken.

You can't take much from the spring game when judging the defense. With them being split up the way they were, it's almost impossible to judge.

Register is just getting too big to play that MLB position. He's 6'4 and the better part of 250 right now and he's still got a lot of room to grow. IMO we have solid depth at the LB position. When you start mentioning Goodson, Boulware, Wiggins, O'Daniel, Rogers, Williams, Joseph, Smith, JD and Judah, that's a lot to choose from to create a quality 2-deep. I've said all along Register would move to DE. He was 245 lbs at 17. Anthony played at 245 as a senior, and I still thought hat was a bit big for a Venables LB...we couldn't even get Vic above 235 at the WDE position. Venables likes LB's that are quick, can cover and blitz. That's called strategic planning, and knowing for the future of the D, he will eventually be the best fit at DE. I think he does well there.
