If we opened with UConn and were playing UGA

Nov 9, 2021, 6:03 AM

this week would we be undefeated?

There is a good chance of it.

Interesting thought.

NO WAY ! Show me one game this season where we dominated any opponent. And please don't say S.C. State. This team has struggled in every game they have played and the results show it. Heck, even our coaching staff can't put a finger on one single issue with this struggling offense, but when you hear excuses like "Crowd noise" being a factor, or our "Brilliant"( Dabo's description) O.C. saying "We need to score more points" or he doesn't want to bench D.J. because he was "seeing improvement and didn't want to disrupt his rhythm".
Well, that should tell you something right there. But if you need more excuses, how about receivers running the wrong routes, dropped passes, overthrown, underthrown balls, bubble screens that never seem to work ,passes thrown behind the line of scrimmage, running on 1st and 2nd downs then throwing down field on 3rd and short only to have a holding penalty called.
And how about this stat; At one point this season DJ had actually thrown more picks than touchdowns.
The only thing I can say with any chance of of being correct is if we had opened with UCONN, our offensive woes would still be uncovered ,and if by some happen chance we were undefeated the #1 team in the country would end that. Georgia is just that much better than we are.

Unfortunately - I do not think we would be undefeated and would be no more likely to have squeaked by the same games we’ve struggled in. Further - I believe we might would get destroyed by UGA at this point in the year. Their game on all fronts has improved much more than ours since the start of the year.

From the psychological aspect, timing, etc., I agree.
I think we would have one more victory (against NC State).
On the other hand, the upcoming game with Georgia (taking UConns spot) wouldn’t be as tight. They’ win by 20

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We would still have one loss at least, and Georgia would win

Nov 9, 2021, 7:12 AM

easily this weekend. Too many injuries right now for us to compete as well as we did in the opener. I also think they have progressed nicely during the year.

Have you watched the games?

Nov 9, 2021, 7:42 AM

We also lost to Pitt, and NC State.

Those weren't flukes. Neither is the fact that all of our FCS wins have been nail biters.

There's zero chance of it.

The UGA game was brutal for Clemson's psyche***

Maybe but I don't see how it was that brutal. I think most thought after the UGA game that there wasn't another team left on the schedule that could beat the Tigers and they would bounce right back into the playoff picture. Boy did that change.

You just explained it***

I am not sure if anything changes but I do think playing UGA first was not ideal for DJ growth. I think it really shattered his confidence and he has been slowly getting better.

All of us that have played sports, have kids in sports know exactly what I am talking about. Hard to believe but so true how a loss of confidence can affect someone’s play. Starting with UCONN or a lesser opponent may have given him a chance to gain some confidence

Following your logic we should still be no worse than 8-1

Nov 9, 2021, 8:05 AM

Especially since there is no other team we have played since that matches the talent level of Clemson.

Go back in history when we lose to UGA early we do struggle for a while and usually get it going late in the year. So I agree with this post. Face it they rattled DJ’s confidence or over confidence in that game. Because he has been seeing Ghost for a while.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

we got lucky getting uga first .....

Nov 9, 2021, 8:24 AM

biggest failure is losing to nc st

had plenty of chances to win that one.

Re: If we opened with UConn and were playing UGA

Nov 9, 2021, 9:22 AM

It's my opinion that we could be just as likely be a complete opposite or worst than our record is with wins and losses as it stands to this point. The point spread with our wins, our record could just as easily be 1 and 8, 2-7 with the only convincing win being over SC State, and only one 10 point through the season this far into the season. FSU and SC State are the only two wins by 10 points or more.

Even though we are at this point a 6-3 team, watching these game, it don't feel like we should be a 6-3 team at this point of the season. This has been a very hard season for Tiger fans to have watch so far this season, and I'm not surprised with the way Tiger fans feel about our team at this point, and why our fans feel that Dabo has only offered excuses as to why this season has gone as it has.

We have had less talent, and we went to the playoffs with them. Going to the playoffs and losing is better than not having a chance to get there, Our chances are very slim to just win the Atlantic side of the ACC. Actually our chances to play for a bad conference title are slim to none, and as it stands right now, it would be pure luck, a miracle if we made it to the ACCCG, and that's a fact!!!!

Would we rather be playing UConn this weekend or GA? I'll take UConn with where we are.

The Tigers have been able to get by more close games than they lost. Yes, I hated loosing to Doeren. PITTt was just better that game.

They play smart, escape more injuries, gain some more confidence, and win against UConn. Then they play their best game this season against Wake Forest and SC. They're at 9-3 and then get a formidable opponent and victory in the bowl and everyone is ready for 2022.

Re: If we opened with UConn and were playing UGA

Nov 9, 2021, 10:37 AM

I won't say that we would be undefeated for sure, but I will say that we would have been a 1 loss team at worst.

DJ's UGA hangover cost Clemson the NC State game. He was indecisive and his lack on confidence at that point in the season caused him to miss a lot of opportunities that were there to be had.

I feel the defense is also a lot less beaten on at that point in the season had we only played UCONN, SC State, and GA Tech. Even if the GA Tech game was still close and physical it would have removed the initial beating that we took against UGA. A little fresher defense against NC State and maybe we never go to overtime even with shaky offensive play.

By the time Clemson reached the Pitt game, DJ had made a good bit of improvement, but injuries had started to pile up and who knows what would have happened differently in that one. I could see a way Clemson could have won that game, but I won't go so far as to say Clemson would be undefeated if we opened with UCONN instead of UGA.

Interesting question. Unfortunately i think jawja has grown up more than we have over the season so far. Sad to say.
