Swinney on if Dixon's transfer affects Mafah redshirt plans

Clemson previously had planned to redshirt four-star freshman running back Phil Mafah, and they have not played him in a game yet this season. That could be subject to change now that senior running back Lyn-J Dixon is entering the transfer portal.
"It could change it. I think we're settling in with Kobe (Pace) and (Will) Shipley for sure," Swinney said on his call-in show. "Hopefully it will be more opportunity for (Michel) Dukes. We've got a lot of confidence in (Darien) Rencher and he's going to give it everything he's got and do it right. We'll see how Mikey responds and if he takes advantage of the opportunity and go from there. It definitely could change things for Phil. We'd love to hold him. He's a special, special player. But we may not be able to do it. We'll just see what happens."
Dukes was not on this week's depth chart, where Shipley and Pace were listed as co-starters and Dixon was third team. Dukes was not there for much of August camp for undisclosed reasons. He has two carries for seven yards and one catch for three yards this season.
Rencher is a super senior with four carries for 14 yards this season.

Mafah has the 4 games he can play but we have to be injury free.

If we stay injury free then maybe you see him against FSU and UConn during mop up time.

Mop up time unless it’s giving free rides to the end zone for Coot defenders

IF Dukes and Rencher are beating this kid out, something is seriously wrong. I have no clue at this point. He is the best pure back on campus, just going by his HS footage.

A lot of things aren't adding up from my perspective, about

the RB situation, and our offense in general. But I have to consider two things: I don't know nearly as much about football as our coaches, and I don't have a clue what goes on day-to-day that influences a lot of coaches' and players' decisions. I get that, but it's all a real head-scratcher from here. At the end of the day, as frustrating and befuddling as it is to a clod like me, for now I gotta trust guys who have been winning championships at the highest level.

that makes no sense either,he is not a guy that is going to stick around for 5 years. if he is not seeing action right away, then there is something else going on. It very well could be that they are protecting him because they not think he is ready maturity-wise, he still has lingering issues with injury that we do not know about, or he had issues with grades over the summer. But the kid graduated early and has been on campus all summer, so the coaches know what they are dealing with and we just got to trust them here. Shipley has grown by leaps and bounds, physically he blew up over the summer. Look at his pigs when he got here, and look at him now, he turned into a beast. Still, Mafah should have no issues beating out Pace.
I hate to speculate on these things, they are only guesses.

We might not expect to keep him for 5 years, but does the lack of playing time bother him less if he is red-shirting. It can be a delicate balance to keep everybody happy with limited carries. Could have been a way in theory to try to free up carries and keep everybody happy. Not saying that is the case but it could be a reason.

I don't understand why we are wanting to redshirt Mafah

if he's a "special, special player" as Dabo said.
Unless he's injured or less than full strength for some reason, it would seem that we would be playing him as much as possible.
*Please don't take this as a criticism of our coaches. I'm just a fan, and they have won a national championship.

I seem to remember an injury in Mafah’s senior year in high school. Talent and attitude are not issues.

The thing about redshirting him seems strange because if he is a stud running back he will only be here 3 years whether he redshirts or not.

that would be at least two backs leaving the same year. So you create separation.

Dabo persists on invoking Rencher's name when talking about RB playing time. He is for sure a team leader off the field, but as far as talent on the gridiron, he is just a politically correct token. His ability is not even in the same hemisphere as the other RBs on the roster. He appears to be an exceptional young man, but those are just football facts.

Mafah had a pretty significant ankle injury in the HS playoffs last season. My understanding is he is 100% healthy. He will start getting significantly more reps in practice and will be a difference maker the second half of the season! Go back and watch this kids film.. he is a helluva RB!
