Not necessarily. He can still mentor kids/coaches, but I doubt he has that much say in on field decisions or performance. I have no insider knowledge though.

I’ve always thought that was an overused trope that wasn’t really true. Leggett’s downfall started with the back to back losses to SCar in the 2010 CWS. That most certainly wasn’t true in the first game. We went in overconfident. sCar was using a junk baller who had been relegated to the end of their bench after being absolutely shellacked by Clemson during the regular season. We swung away at everything that night. If my perusal is correct we only had 4 strikeouts. Only 1 looking. We swung at garbage ending up as easy fly balls and grounders all night. I don’t regard that as playing tight. Our pitchers did well enough to win both games. And we lost the elimination game by one run.

Leggett was notoriously tight and rigid as a head coach and refused to change. Much to his demise. Even he has alluded to his failure to compromise when he was HC and how, in retrospect, he would have been more willing to accept change. I know some of his former players that are HS coaches and in private conversations were against their players coming to Clemson to play for him. They alluded to him taking all the fun out of baseball. No facial hair, no rally caps, no bat flips, no long hair, no tattoos. For better or worse, kids these days don't want to play under those restrictions. I often wonder how much he cringes inside every time a Clemson player stomps home plate when we score.

I wasn’t trying to be hostile about it or anything. It was a well worn trope that had some basis in fact. But I don’t know that his coaching was as much responsible as the general circumstances around the program 2010-2015. But at the most pivotal moment of his career - one win away from a cws final the team objectively played too loose. And a lot of the folks who most bashed him for being “too tight” also hated the dog piles and trips for ice cream - which are a little contradictory.

Bakich showed him some respect and gave him a ceremonial role with the team. I don't think it has helped or hurt as far as our record but perhaps it has been a net positive in the dugout/locker room.
