Offensive line

Aug 16, 2021, 9:24 AM

So we lost our best offensive lineman from last year. Who thinks the OL will be better this year?

Me.I never doubt this coaching staff not to make improvements. The best is yet to come.

An OL isn't just about 1 player's talent but how the group performs cohesively and what it is asked to do and the strengths/weaknesses of what the position players can execute.

I know they will be thrown into the fire out the gate. Im sure the coaches are putting extra emphasis on that group this fall. I have no doubts they will be ready. What’s more is that our d line is one of the best. Iron sharpens iron so the O line should be able to improve practicing against those guys.

Here’s how it will go.

Aug 16, 2021, 10:20 AM

Preseason, it will be all about “finding the right combination” and “learning assignments.”

We will hear about how dominant our defense is.

Dabo will say that he likes his guys.

We will see a mix of posts here, some being excited about how amazing our defense is, and some being anxious about our offensive line not being ready.

In the regular season, we will have some good moments and some bad moments with our offensive line. They will struggle with consistency.

Later in the season, we will start to feel confident about the offensive line. We will have settled into a rotation.

In the postseason, we will struggle with OL consistency. We will likely be unable to rely on our running game when we need critical yards.

Everyone will say that we are young and that it will be better next year.

Rinse and repeat.

LOL, it sounds like you've seen this movie before.

Sometimes the road to the truth is so elusive it's confusing and reality becomes illusion.

LOL, Amen. Put me on the side that is anxious

about the o line. Seems to be that way for me for years. Just think as a whole, they have consistently been the most under performing group during our championship runs.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No, no, no, you've got it all wrong

Aug 16, 2021, 11:20 AM [ in reply to Here’s how it will go. ]

You find everyone who has even the slightest negative thing to say about any aspect of our team, even if they can back it up with statistics and film analysis, and you call them a coot. Find everyone who criticized Elliot even a little when he implied he would feel "really good" about Billy Wiles starting at QB, and you call them a coot. Find everyone who says Clemson isn't the best in the nation at every single position group, and you call them a coot.

Take this lesson to heart and you'll be well on your way to becoming a productive member of TigerNet!

P.S. Coot!

Look good in practice playing each other.

Win or play pretty well in some early season tournament.

Go on a streak.

Get excited.

Get in conference play.

Struggle scoring points. Have mysterious defensive lapses.

Return to earth.

Rinse / repeat.

We just don’t seem to recruit those big guys on our O line like Georgia Alabama LSU and Ohio State This has been a weakness for years We are doing better but not there yet Ive always thought that maybe we don’t have the right O Line coach recruiting It seems we have to pass on 3rd and 2 to get a first down

I saw a different movie in 2018. The offensive line ended up being a strength against Alabama. I feel a 2018 type year is happening this season. Downloaded my tickets for Charlotte today. Spot the ball. Go Tigers!

He played OT which is the least of the concerns

Aug 16, 2021, 10:26 AM

The two biggest issues with the OL last year were run blocking in the interior and depth.

Depth is for sure better as the last two classes have been big in both number and quality.

Hopefully the resolve the interior.

We are probably deeper are more talented at OT specifically then ever, depth still a little young but not like last year.

We literally had 6 functional guys last year on the entire OL. That's going to impact the starters no matter how good they are.

Re: He played OT which is the least of the concerns

Aug 16, 2021, 11:02 AM

The depth was definitely an issue and youth to it and still, they played well, just not NC level.

I also think that staff was all-in on pass protection leading up to TL's third year. and with ETN returning, they did not really have the right group. Then it go creative of how to use ETN to overcome the mismatch. I mean, what are you going to do, not use ETN? If there is attrition/injury at the WR position, what then?

If it plays like last year, then is it time for a new coach?

Aug 16, 2021, 10:45 AM

Great O-lines play as one, last year, there was really only one - Carmen...a coach is responsible for the players bonding to play bonded together, as our D line appears to have accomplished this year.

Re: If it plays like last year, then is it time for a new coach?

Aug 16, 2021, 11:47 AM

It's time for us to accept the fact our coach is responsible for the ol. We have a very limited capacity cordinator. He does not have vision. He tries to make a hole in the line and none is there. He must find a way to teach what we have for a change.

The plight of the Clemson football team this year will revolve around the play of our offensive line and the coaching of Jim Caldwell and his support staff!!!!

McFadden was our best lineman in 2020

Aug 16, 2021, 3:31 PM

per Clemson coach ratings of each play and series. But agreed, O-line play will make or break Clemson opportunities in 2021 season. Some questions I am interested to see answered are as follow:

- Coaches seem dead-set to start Bockhorst in OG or C spot. Bock was lowest-rated starting OL in 2020. Was Bock hurt all last year? Can he step up?
- How soon can both Leigh and Tate start? Hopefully soon. They are miles ahead of prior Clemson frosh in terms of strength, speed, size and talent. Hope to see them coached up and given reps.
- Can Mayes and Tchio compete for serious reps? They were rated highly out of high school. How are they progressing?
- I recall reading Putnam excelled at either run or pass blocking and was weak in the other. How are Putnam's skill sets progressing?
- What gives at Center? Beaucoup uncertainty is the prognosis reported on TNet. Sounds like Rayburn has ruffled some feathers or found his way into dog house. Key position for leadership & QB continuity.
- W. Parks rated very well as 2020 backup. RT position seems to be solid. Any updates at RT?
- McFadden has potential like J. Carman as NFL OG. Looking forward to watching him continue to grow in 2021.

These guys vs. Clemson DL seems like a middle weight vs. heavy weight match. But anyway, we all understand the pressure on OL in 2021. And I'm pulling for some pleasant surprises. Go Tigers!

McFadden was our best lineman in 2020 - True!

Aug 16, 2021, 8:58 PM

McFadden will do a good job at LT!

Overall, you have to think with all the emphasis on the OL, the players themselves have heard the noise. Nobody wants that as something that defines them(as a player). I am sure the training staff re-did the way they train the OL from a speed/strength/conditioning standpoint. We clearly and obviously were not physical enough. We had been in previous years; but again I have to say, "no spring, summer and irregular fall camp last year affected Clemson more than teams who had more out the box ready OL types playing the position"! Our OL tend to be good players who have to be built into FBS starters! And to be built into dominant FBS starters - it takes time! We didn't have time last year!

More than anything - i.m.o this is what happened to our OL play in 2020 and they never caught up!

This year with a normal off season regiment - I look for the OL to return to being a solid group! Solid - at worst. I have hopes they will actually be a strength - mostly because I envision a "motivated and focused and p'd off group of young people who want to make it right and show the world that wasn't the best of their capabilities last year"! I think they will!
That might be naive Clemson Tigers fan(for life) talking - but I would not be surprised 1 bit if it happened!

Pennington is another one of the young maulers that will be a key cog down the line. He’s a behemoth.

Re: Offensive line

Aug 16, 2021, 6:08 PM

I think our depth this year will allow our Oline to be better at the end of the season. McFadden and Parks will be solid at OT. Inside will be the question mark again. Bockhorst and Putnam will be a year better. And I don’t think it will be difficult to replace Cade Stewart.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Offensive line

Aug 16, 2021, 7:28 PM

I do. I think our pass protection will be similar, but the run blocking will be better. The depth will also be MUCH better. I also like our chances at running power with Pace which we did not have last year.
