I have a standard def Direct TV dish (18" round i think) and

Aug 23, 2013, 11:21 PM

I would like to get a dish capable of receiving a high definition signal. Is there a certain type of dish I need or are there any dishes that are easier to set up than others? I have looked on ebay and found several types. Any advice would help. I am planning on buying one on ebay but if you know of a better way to get one let me know.

From my experience - you MUST have the appropriate dish for it to work properly. I had a standard dish and would not work until they put up an HD dish (for our HD receiver). I have no idea how that stuff really works, but my HD dish is somewhat oblong as opposed the round one I had initially.

Not sure if that helps - but I would call Directv and ask their tech guys.

It takes more than a dish to get DTV's HD going.

You need the HD dish and the dish's HD receiving head.

Call DTV and have them bring one out and install it. Seems if you are paying for HD then it's part of their responsibility to furnish the right dish for the service.

and they now know if both the dish and receiver are in your name. so you'll definitely need to run a test. before gameday.

First, Do not switch to Dish. They are the minor leagues. I switched last month to Direct because the HD is so much better for sports. Second, you can't just buy the equipment and have service. Costco has great deals for Direct. I would never go back to Dish for any price

equipment, they install it at no extra charge with the monthly service. I have moved twice in last year, they upgraded both times at no extra charge (new equipment) and both times threw in NFL Sunday ticket for free.

If you want it for tailgating, that is another story. The last install (two weeks ago - I got the Genie), I asked the guy and he said it is extremely difficult to aim the HD dish without special equipment (you have to align 3 satellites I think). I have an extra HD dish only a year old but I think I will trash it now.

Does anyone pull in HD tailgating? If so how?

Thanks

Be aware that the Genie works off of your wireless HOME network. Now if you take the main Genie receiver to the game, then that could work. But you can't use the clients (mini-genie) since they are trying to connect to your home network.

I have the Genie network, but I have the additional HD receiver that can be used (it just has to be authorized by DTV). That box is much simpler IMO to set up for tailgating - but again - that's JMO. I use a different dish for that than the one on my home. It's an older dish, but it IS for HD. It is NOT the same looking dish though.

Yes, it can be done and a lot of people do it. I already have the service and an HD (Direct TV slime line) dish on my house but I want an extra for tailgating. Currently I am using a dish not capable of receiving HD signals and for this wondering I am using it with an HD box. I really just need another dish! Thanks for the info

Re: Not sure you would notice a big differece with a SD

setup on a small screen TV (32"). The HD dish is a monster and more time consuming to setup even with a signal strength meter. The SD may be easier for tailgating. Just my $.02 worth.

Worth a shot.

You can get HD with your old dish

Aug 29, 2013, 1:27 PM

You just need an HD receiver. The bigger 'HD' dishes allow you to pick up the HD and SD channels at the same time, as they are on different satellites. The HD channels may be split among satellites also, I'm not sure about Directv's layout. Worst case you can point to the main HD satellite and get those channels. If you want to get all of the available channels at the same time, then you'd need the bigger dish.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

why not just upgrade through directv

Aug 29, 2013, 1:30 PM

They will do the upgrade for free including install assuming you are not locked in with a contract currently
