Yesterday changed my mind on the RB room

Apr 4, 2021, 2:45 PM

At the end of last season, I really liked what I saw out of Mellusi (and my opinion matters - joking of course). Lyn-J never really seemed to round out as a complete back. But going into the spring game I was thinking,
1) Mellusi
2) Dixon
3) Pace
4) Shipley
5) Mafah
6) Dukes
But after yesterday, my pecking order shuffled significantly,
1) Pace
2) Mafah
3) Shipley
4) Dixon
5) Mellusi
With that room being extremely competitive 1)-5). Pace is just built different.

The WR group looks really deep as well.

If Dixon drops like that, he gone.

That's the problem now, how many hit the portal in the next few weeks ?

Agreed. I’m curious if those other folks just got more opportunities to prove themselves because they haven’t had the same game experience as Mellusi/Dixon. The coaches have so much more insight from 1) being more knowledgeable and 2) seeing them in drills, practice, etc. and I have a suspicion my take from the spring game is myopic.

On one of those QUICK WHISTLE Sacks

Dixon caught the ball wide open over the middle with NO ONE around him. Would have been a big gainer except for touch football on the QB. Gotta protect them in practice, just takes away from our offense when the D knows the QB won't run.

If the O Line improves

Dixon will have a good year. He is the most experienced of the group. Spiller will do a good job as the new coach. The running backs aren’t the problem right now!

Kobe Pace #14 last season

Now #20?

He played a little last season. Seemed much stronger than the rest of the backs.

I agree except that Lyn J has to have an edge from playbook perspective.

Also, how many wide receivers are under 6’3”??

Spector, Ajou, Ladson? But the last two are 6’2” I think. Definitely a tall and athletic group.

Pace looks like a guy that’s getting NFL ready. Stacked with speed. Good hands out of the backfield (had a nice catch last year, maybe against GT). I’m excited to see him this season.

Lyn J is a home run hitter - you have to have one of those for the rare occasion when the OL creates a crease and he’s one on one with a safety. Pace can get that 3rd and 1 you have to have when the line can’t get a push - you have to have one of those to establish physicality. Bottom line is there will be plenty of carries for the first two and probably three RBs. Then we’ve seen enough to know these coaches just don’t trust true freshmen to protect the QB against blitz pickups so Shipley and Mafah will see limited duty not in crucial games/situations until late in the season or maybe postseason.

I saw nothing out of Shipley that would...

Put him ahead of Lyn-J.
