Clemson QB depth sitting in the Tiger dugout...

Apr 27, 2021, 8:11 PM

Why wouldn’t dabo stroll on over and talk to Ty Olenchuk and Monte and get him in some pads after the season ? He played Dutch Fork is like 6’2” and I get not a 4-5* recruit but could definitely get it done for us in a pinch I believe ... won two title and threw for like 9k yards in 3 years and actually rushed for close to 7-800 also... I’m not 100% on this but pretty sure he beat The almighty Doty to go to the state finals also... seems like just as good of an option than any imo

If both our potential incoming freshmen choose pro baseball,

he may well have that talk with Monty. But, if the situation remains desperate, more likely he will grudgingly use the Portalpotty.

I agree in for sure if we can get one of those guys on campus I just don’t see them turning down a first round grade ... especially coming here knowing DJ is here for atleast two seasons. And I think we will have a tough time with the portal bc the reason these kids jump to the portal tells me they aren’t coming to Clemson knowing they are sitting behind DJ... atleast any of the more talented qbs in the portal with a shot at playing.

There are a couple of things I can tell you for certain on this topic.

1) Ty Olenchuk is not going to play football at Clemson. DJ could be the only QB left on the roster and Ty isn't playing football. He made a very clear decision before leaving high school to do baseball only. It was his decision not to pursue football.

2) DJ being at Clemson has absolutely nothing to do with the Taylor or Chandler decisions.

Chandler's chance to play football was an afterthought late in the process when he had already decided to be a college baseball player only. I imagine he will make his decision based off of whether or not he thinks 3 years in school can make him more money than he will get in this draft. Something that people forget is that there are WAY more top of the line baseball talents left in college baseball this season due to the limited 5 round draft last summer. If he is a top 20 pick then depth of talent won't affect him, but if he slips a little in the eyes of scouts or they doubt his willingness to sign it could change his placement. I expect Chandler to sign in the draft and never make it to Clemson.

Taylor is a very different story. Word I have gotten is that Taylor very much coveted the football offer, but he did it with the idea that he would get his shot at WR. The chance to play QB is not what is drawing Taylor to Clemson, but it is the chance to play anywhere on the college football field for Clemson. I have heard he LOVES football! Taylor may get drawn away to the MLB by a huge pay check as well, but depth at QB won't concern him because he intends to be at QB for 1 season and move to WR anyway. Something that many people may not know about Taylor is that if he enrolls at Clemson in the summer, he may very well be the fastest player on the baseball AND football field on his first day on campus. He has ELITE speed for any sport!

Thanks. I was just going to post about Ty when I saw yours pop up. They're several that stay in touch and yes, Ty and the others opted for baseball. He will benefit from college.. I hope. We'll see how good See is. Ty doesn't have the FB movement and hasn't perfected other pitches he is comfortable throwing yet. Unlike Chandler who is miles ahead of any pitcher on Clemson roster.

I have to disagree with you on money and his decision whether or not to go to college. Dhood gave some insight in his article on Bubba. Yes, he's got scouts and agents in his ear all day, every day. Honestly, from what I hear, it's a decision whether or not he's ready to enter the job market or does he want the traditional college experience and life lessons. A la dhood article, you get a glimpse into which way dad is leaning and with their strong faith, mom supports dad too. Should be interesting to see how it plays.

Good post, spot on. As for Ty, had he NOT made the decision, and even entertained the thought, he'd have zero impact on this year. Hunter and wiles are ahead of him.

I hope you are right about the Chandler decision. It's much easier to believe he may end up at Clemson if the decision is about a college experience or not rather than taking a bet that he can move his way up and earn more than a couple million dollars after 3 years in school.

I did read the article by Hood, but lots of times I feel people have a certain thought in their head leading up to the draft and then when you actually come to the realization of becoming a millionaire it can change their thinking.

I think Ty got a rough break this season with the complete absence of experience on the Clemson pitching staff. In a typical year he would have been a really promising young arm that was allowed to get his feet wet in relief or in midweek starts while he developed a little more. Having the pressure to perform immediately as a weekend starter I think has hurt his confidence and development a little. Hopefully he can get it back going and make some improvements during the off-season to get back on track with pitching to his potential.

All great points and hopefully we can get one to campus but I was posting as if neither ended up coming to Clemson ... and just throwing it out there I just knew he played qb in high school and was a decent qb and seems pretty athletic ... I could be way off and hopefully I am but I wouldn’t say he would be THAT far behind hunter or wiley which were walk ons as well... and I was just making a point most of the qbs in the portal aren’t coming knowing they are sitting behind dj so the talent we would be realistically pulling from in there is prob not that great .

Oh. Great idea, no doubt. Spot on about the portal... Afterall as you spelled out, they're in the portal to find PT. Not just mop up. Ty is a winner. He's definitely got talent. I should have made it more clear that Hunter may not be as talented as Ty or others but he's had a year in our system and now more reps with the ones this spring than he may have otherwise had... It would take someone like Ty to get up to speed with the playbook... My opinion only. Thanks for posting.

I agree and honestly I know GT was really bad last year especially in our game, but hunter didn’t look that bad ... I don’t think he fits the norm for us as far as athletic ability and running at qb but def saw him do some good things and already in the system is a plus for sure! I guess what I meant was before we have our punter line up at qb there were other options as far as bodies for depth ... kind of like nuk in basketball that year but like mentioned before Ty may have no interest at all in football but i did pull up some of his tapes on the HUdL site and I mean he seemed like he was pretty good. I trust the staff though it’s Why I’m here and not getting paid to be a coach I reckon lol

He would automatically take a schollie from football, I guarantee Monte would love the free player but not sure Dabo is ready to give up a schollie on a maybe. But that is good to know that has potential and I assure you that has not passed by Dabo.
