Idioms gone wild

May 23, 2022, 11:55 PM

We've all heard generation-spanning sayings and euphemisms from around the world, right?

"A bird in hand is worth two in the bush" from the UK

"A journey of a thousand miles begins with one step" from China or thereabouts

But there's one that's a single four-letter word, understood in nearly every language; not a four-letter word like sh#t or h#ll or d#mn or gamec#ck whatever, but one that wasn't even a word 'til the mid-eighteen hundreds, the origin of which remains in dispute to this day.

What is it?

"Okay" it is!

Aye Joe, way to go!

Attributed by some to pre-telegraph abbreviations used in newspapers, a shortened version of "Oll Korrect", "Old Kinderhook" Martin Van Buren and 'okeh' from the Choctaw languag

Pretty sure it's acceptable either way. And as "OK" in caps, "Ok" and 'ok' lower case.

said/used in every language in the world. But that's more than 4 letters obviously. And not sure that is really correct or not.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I seem to remember reading somewhere that the most

May 24, 2022, 11:02 AM

universally understood word in nearly every language was 'huh'.
