Ideal situation heading into next year?

Oct 25, 2021, 3:20 PM

I'd really like to see Tony Elliott get a head coaching shot somewhere. I know everybody is down on him right now (and somewhat justifiably so), but I do think he has potential as a head coach. Would like to see him go somewhere that he has a decent shot at success. Maybe a place like Cincy if Luke Fickell goes elsewhere. Or Louisiana if somebody plucks Napier. It would have to be somewhere that will pay him $2 million a year to be a head coach - which limits the options somewhat, but hopefully there are options.

If Tony could get a head coaching job... then Dabo would have an easy option of letting Streeter go with Tony to be OC by saying "I don't think you are quite ready" for promotion to OC at Clemson. If Tony doesn't take Streeter, then he could take Grisham.

Caldwell could retire and let Thomas Austin take his place (I think there's a good shot of this happening)

Then Dabo is somewhat forced to bring some new ideas in. I think he's correct in the sense that Tony didn't forget how to coach, but he also badly needs some fresh offensive ideas in the coach's room.

The above scenario is a way for Dabo to get to the solution he needs without compromising his values. Hoping it can somehow happen.

Isn't he at Clemson as an analyst or something?

I like everything but the Thomas Austin hire.

No business replacing current guy with the understudy.

I would consider that to be the easy way rather than ideal. I don't believe Dabo's values are to keep people on staff that do not produce the desired/expected results. If you have an employee that you know has the potential to produce, it is your job as the manager (or HC in this situation) to help get them there, especially when they are not currently producing. Dabo's values did not keep Kevin Steele employed at Clemson after the WVU Orange Bowl debacle. IMO, Dabo believes in surrounding his program with like minded guys that can produce results on the field. I do not believe that Dabo's values will keep TE employed by Clemson as the OC IF Dabo sees that he does not have what it takes to produce. As long as Dabo believes TE is the guy, he will be the OC. The minute that changes, we see a change there. Just my $.02 worth.

Dabo and Steele were totally different, they didn't like each other and Steele basically had contempt for the CU program, firing his a$$ was a no-brainer. These guys are different, 1)Tiger players, 2)either recruited by or close to Dabo, 3)They speak the company line and stay in their lanes. I do agree that we need to replace at least 2 of these positions but to use Steele as a comparison is silly.

The Steele situation wasn't comparable at all.

Steele was 100% bitter that Dabo got the HC job over him. Easy fire.

Wide receivers block or sit

DJ remembers he plays quarterback

Everyone on the offense not an OL spends the entire summer learning how to catch a football

The best scenario would be TE to a smaller school like you said. He takes Streeter, Thomas Austin, and Grisham with him. Street could be his new OC, Austin his OL coach, and Grisham could continue with wide receivers at the new school. Then, Dabo could take TE's salary and make a pass at Jeff Scott (who may be fired this year, history shows USF does not like coaches with poor records, even early on in their contract), or he could go out an hire a big name OC who brings several support guys with him.

I don't know about bringing back Jeff Scott. I'd go out with that $2 million(or add even more) and get the best OC I could find in the country. Current OC, small school head coach, NFL guy. It doesn't matter.

Well, that's the easy way for Dabo to save face and not have to make a decision or face the music that he's made misteps.

So is that the easiest for the program? Yes. But personally I think Dabo needs a bit of humble pie and have to fire someone and not take the easy way out.

The "best is standard" requires accountability. Right now there doesn't seem to be accountability. Dabo has been so confident in his plan that i think for his best long term success (like Saban got in 2016) is a shake of the foundation that he needs to change. He needs to not plan to just get to the top but to stay there.

And building a loyalist coaching tree hasn't worked out yet.

I have a feeling Caldwell will be asked to retire after this year
