I wonder if the rare air has created an insular entitlement splinter in our culture?

Oct 23, 2021, 7:00 PM

We are missing the laser mentals, the chip on the shoulder, the grit that won so many championships.

More than the NCSU loss, this one exposes that plainly. I’m glad I’m not responsible to coach this team right now - it’s going to be very difficult on Dabo to put pieces together and focus this group. Removing a deep splinter is painful and bloody. It’s gonna require some surgical precision, and it’s gonna hurt.

Never quit.

It started when our head coach went Hollywood instead of just being the humble, hard-working, ah shucks coach he used to be. The culture has definitely changed and I hope this year's wake-up call knocks us back into reality and we make the changes we need to make.

I think it’s a plausible position,

Oct 23, 2021, 7:17 PM

but I don’t see Dabo “going Hollywood” necessarily. I mean, he ain’t the guy in all those annoying Aflac commercials…

There’s definitely a false confidence built on auspices or something like that. The statement “everything will work itself out” is just that - a statement. Turns out it takes tremendous mental and physical fortitude to bring a statement like that to fruition, and that fact seems to be lost on some of our mentally weak players and, perhaps, coaches.

Tough to watch.

I guess what I mean by Hollywood is that he got put on a pedestal and was really enjoying the view hobnobbing with celebrities at sporting events all over the country and then seemingly commenting on every potential controversial topic that made him a target of the media. I just think he lost focus and refuses to address the tough decisions he knows he needs to make. I just liked it better when he kind of stayed below the radar as much as he could and kept it real.

I still love him and appreciate all he has done for us. I think this season had so much potential and it is such a shock to see it go sideways that it is hard not to be somewhat critical out of frustration. I just hope our recruits hang with us, especially our next QB, and we put this dumpster fire out next year.

Fair question and good points. I had this feeling last season when Dabo was spewing that bulletin board material before the Ohio St semifinal. Felt like somewhere along the way, confidence became unnecessarily public cockiness. Big difference this year is we don’t have the players (or leaders) on offense to even remotely back it up.

This program needs to get back to being hungry & humble.

This is on Dabo believing his own crap.

He a plan to get to the top. Not one to stay at the top. He has made the mistakes of countless companies and organizations.

Question is can he make the hard choices or be willing to change? Are we apple computer or kodak camera?

Unfortunately I think Dabo is more Kodak.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I kinda get what you mean…kinda…

Oct 24, 2021, 8:39 AM

It’s just that Kodak and Apple are vastly different things - each has an identity and a purpose of its own. Kodak was a huge company for over 100 years, so that’s not some flash in the pan.

It’s fine to have an identity. Dabo’s identity is patently different from that of Saban, Smart, etc. and that’s fine. It’s that difference that has played such a role in the recent success of the program. He’s even shown that he can be “different” and still make exacting professional moves (staff changes) when necessary.

The problem I see is a lack of edge. Our “wanters” are broken or, at least, insufficiently calibrated. The communicable disease of pass dropping is mental, not a lack of physical ability. The stupid penalties are mental. The missed blocking assignments are mental/coaching. The hesitancy of Ross to run a crossing route at full speed is mental.

Fear owns a part of the heart of this team for some reason. It may very well be the fear of discovering our own insufficiency and admitting we don’t have elite mentals like we have had in the past.

When I refer to Kodak I refer to them having digital cameras way before anyone else but lacked but trusted to survive on what they built over time and refused to change. They could have changed but decided to keep with "their culture".

Apple knew it had something special. Got to the top and crashed down and made the tough choices to turn it around.

I love the Clemson culture. I love what Dabo sells to the kids. I don't love his pompousness on coaching and his plan to build extreme loyalty. Surrounding yourself with boot lickers never turns out well. And that's what he's done on the offensive side of the ball.

They are vastly different things…

Oct 24, 2021, 1:03 PM [ in reply to I kinda get what you mean…kinda… ]

Because Apple adapted and evolved. Kodak “stuck to their guns”. Arrogance , ignorance, fear of change.

That “manufactured adversity” crap was a convenient lie

DJ is one of the worst QBs in the nation and Dabo needs the offense to adapt and stop running the same crap that requires NFL QB play. DJ is nothing comparable to our previous quarterbacks. He wouldn't be starting over anyone in the last 20 years. Heck Kyle Parker would have this team undefeated right now. That is how bad DJ is as a QB.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yeah but Kyle Parker was an NFL caliber QB.

Oct 24, 2021, 8:58 AM

Dabo told me so.

Are y’all meaning Stoudt? Kyle Parker was a really good

cracked ribs will tend to do that to you.

Oct 25, 2021, 2:19 PM

before the dirty hit he was well on his way to beating the later crowned National Champions and Cam Newton. Also had we not dropped that for sure TD we woudl have won. But Kyle Parker was one of our better QBs in Clemson history. He was much needed because the previous group with Cullen Harper, Will Proctor was pretty stinking bad.

Starting the season at #2 after losing both a generational quarterback and generational running back likely did not help with motivation in practice.

It's a lot harder to motivate college players to give it everything in practice when everyone is telling them that they walk on water.

Georgia has been playing the entire season with a chip on their shoulder because they have crapped the bed the last several years.

Excellent post. I was thinking the same things ..... a sort of complacency that you don't really think or know is there. You can say all the right things, do all the right things, and is not something that is easily identifiable or easy to fix ..... especially when you don't think that is the problem. I don't think you can manufacture that competitive edge ..... something that we are missing now.

+1. Good post and comments. Yes, Dabo has become one of the elite and has been less focused on Clemson Football. And there have been two outcomes for Dabo teams -- greatness with DW4 and TL16 and typically goodness with other QB's.

Look for Dabo to regain the fire in 2022 and adapt accordingly with coaches and players.

The team almost looks like they think other teams are just going to roll over and quit because we are Clemson. All we have to do is walk out in the field and we win. It has been kind of like that for a few years but all these teams have been working hard and their goal has been to beat Clemson. Much like OH ST in the playoffs. We have shown that we are vulnerable this year and all these teams now believe they can beat us. Believing something is possible is a powerful thing. Our team needs to start believing again.
