Seems like he might know a thing or two.

Thomas Austin stepping in as soon as 2022

Sep 7, 2021, 11:55 AM

There's a reason he left an on field position at Ga State to be an analyst at Clemson. Robbie Caldwell nearing retirement (probably after this year) and Austin is going to step right in.

Was a promising young OL coach so hopefully that bears fruit this year as the season goes on.

Robbie is a good guy but I suspect the game Saturday solidified the retirement issue. I hope Austin is the answer if that is how it goes but Saturday makes you wonder about even that. Maybe we need someone new who didnt play for RC. A totally fresh approach maybe

Caldwell came to Clemson after Austin left I believe

But the overall point of a lot of the newer coaching hires seemingly only being former Clemson players could have its drawbacks.

Bates was an outside hire and one of the better recruiters on staff and seemingly fostering some good development with the DT's.

Yes it is great to have guys that have been in the program and understand the culture, but at what point does it create an echo chamber? We have thus far been able to have a pretty high success rate in identifying cultural fits in recruiting, can a similar process not be applied to interviewing coaches?
