I was watching Sports Center...

Sep 19, 2022, 9:22 AM

and they had an interesting story.

On the heels of the WNBA finals (which I could not care any less about), they interviewed a few different people who were all staunch supporters of the WNBA. The gist of the discussion was, they all wanted higher salaries, bigger rosters, and more teams, even though they acknowledge that hardly anyone watches, something they blame on the league owners for not marketing the league properly. No big revelation there.

However, the surprising part, at least for me, was the league loses an average of $10 million annually and, that amount is covered by the NBA.

Talk about throwing good money after bad. Sheesh !!!

Thanks for sharing.

I always wondered how they could be profitable with such a small fan-base. Market economics catches up with everyone sooner or later.

My opinion

The WNBA has 2 dozen really good players (maybe more but not many more). The problem is that they are spread over 12 cities. If you had maybe 6-8 teams that would increase the number of really good players on each team and perhaps make the product on the court more watchable and thus more marketable and thus provide more dollars to be dispersed amongst the participants.

That said, I don't think I have watched a full NBA game in over a decade so there's that.

The staunch supporters evidently have dog sh#$ stuffed in their cranium. Their only hope is for the NBA to share more of the Chinese money they get.

One major problem with the WNBA, at least IMO...

Sep 19, 2022, 9:59 AM

is that many of the players use the platform as an opportunity to espouse their political/personal views/agenda.

While there are plenty of male athletes doing the same thing, NO ONE cares what any of them says or thinks. Just shut-up and play !!!!

how about they play 15 minute games at halftime of NBA games

Sep 19, 2022, 10:03 AM

they would be playing in front of much bigger crowds. the overhead costs would shrink dramatically.

The NBA and ESPN

Sep 19, 2022, 10:26 AM

Subsidize the WNBA.

You know ESPN is losing huge money airing those games. They are already in serious financial shape which is why they keep laying people off. I don’t see how they can keep showing WNBA games. Naturally this is politically motivated, and culturally, but at some point even Disney/ESPN is going to have to accept the reality of the situation.

The sad cold hard reality is women, in general, don’t care about sports and don’t support sports, in particular female/women’s sports. Women make up over 50% of the population, but the WNBA has near zero support. The LPGA has been struggling for years and is barely keeping its head above water. The PGA and the TV networks are subsidizing the LPGA to keep it afloat. The only female sport that has had success has been tennis. But with Serena Williams winding down her career, and going on podcast after podcast acting like a victim, her support is waning as well.

We see the same thing in politics. The left always scream and cry about how women make up over 50% of the population but women aren’t being supported politically. People like AOC saying that men in America hate women. Female politicians don’t need the male vote. They could easily win with just women voting. But again women don’t care and don’t support other women.

But of course what do they ALL do? Yell about men and society and pretend to be victims.

Nobody wants to watch a “professional” sport where a bunch of out of shape 40 something year old dudes could roll in off the couch and beat all the teams.

I mean I don’t get how it’s surprising, they literally scream at men 24/7 365 telling us how crappy we are and how easy we have it then scream that we don’t watch them enough. It’s basically like beating someone in the face repeatedly and then asking then why don’t they like you ?‍♂️?‍♂️?‍♂️?‍♂️

The wnba has always suffered from poor marketing and perception

Sep 19, 2022, 10:55 AM

Womens college basketball has been way more popular.

For some reason, It has always been ok to make fun of the wnba. Even people who support womens sports still use the wnba at the butt of jokes.

Women's college basketball isn't popular at all.

and it's really bad in general.

There's a reason that the few top teams regularly beat other top 25 teams by 30 points.

There just aren’t that many girls that are really good at basketball

Sep 19, 2022, 2:00 PM

Therefore there are only a handful of college teams that are really good. Fans will support a team that is incredibly successful, but when you think about it most basketball Arenas hold 10,000 people or less. The college women’s basketball programs that are successful are at schools that have football stadiums that hold over 80,000 or in a decent size city. Therefore, it doesn’t take much to fill the seats. So it looks like it’s popular and like it has a lot of support, but in reality it doesn’t.

I watched part of an WNBA game and it didn't suck (where high school and college women's basketball generally sucks, like the players can't dribble or hit routine shots).

No market for it, though.

Women don't care about sports.

Men don't care about women's sports.

and asking for more money when they have no market and are losing millions per year is just kind of pathetic.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The WNBA is painful to watch.

Sep 19, 2022, 1:54 PM

These are the best women in the world at basketball and they look uncoordinated and terrible. Any decent high school boys basketball team could beat an All-Star team of women. You can get a bunch of guys off of most playgrounds around America that could beat a WNBA team.

I love sports and most of my women friends do too. However, I think most chicks prefer watching cutie dudes and not gross unsexy women. We all appreciate great real feminine female athletes, but for viewing pleasure, men’s sports will almost always win out.

Can't make any money when viewership's in the 200,000 households for the average game.

Ask CNN what kinda revenues those kinda numbers generate.

Even still, ESPN can't pull the plug. They're captive to their own messaging. Meanwhile, the Equity Brigade'll just keep demanding an ever larger share of that which they had no hand in generating/creating.

Equinomics, 101.

I’d say $10 million loss is pretty much break even. More solvent than I would have guessed.

It's ironic isn't it? The few billionaires and multi-millionaires being willing to invest in a sport that few care about, being questioned by players and media for not doing enough to market the product? I was an avg high school basketball player (6'0" 190/better at football), but when playing pickup with better friends at Fike, we played good players from good Clemson women's teams and won out. Just too much size and athletic difference -- tough to market a pro product that a good men's high school team can beat.
