Their offensive coordinator, Todd Monken, has been an offensive coordinator at the following places:

Eastern Michigan
Oklahoma State
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Cleveland Browns

He was also the head coach at Southern Mississippi.

Like many top football programs today, he has high level OC experience at the college level and/or NFL level, as well as head coaching experience.

This are the kind of qualifications Dabo should’ve looked for when hiring our OC last offseason. But he didn’t, and it shows.

Well, I believe we won two NCs with a coordinator who had not been a coordinator prior to Clemson. He had not been a position coach at any other P5 program. So JKs post is simply a troll job.

BTW, like Clemson a few years ago UGA had elite players across the board which makes any coach look good. We have struggled getting elite players in the NIL era plus some of the guys we thought were elite did not pan out. It happens at all programs with Bama this year as the best example.

We won two national titles with a head coach who has never been a coordinator either... but those are gambles of long odds. Experience and a past history of success DO matter.

Clemson was in position, when Elliot left, to choose almost virtually whomever they wanted to come in and rejuvenate the offense. Now Dabo's hands may have been tied since it sounded like he kept the staff together by making promises that they would be 'next man up'... and he's a man of his word.

Nevertheless, anyone who looks at the situation and thinks that Streeter was the best a national program like Clemson could have hired is... well we're just not going to agree and we'll leave it at that.

Dabo had the same change to bring in a national coordinator when Morris left but chose to stay in house. The issue was not the coordinator the past two years as we had a QB with the yips and WRs who were highly rated but did not pan out. It happens in sports. It even happened this past year where Bama had the most talented team on paper (per the Blue-Chip Ratio) but it did not lead to a NC. It is easy for a couch coach to point fingers at one aspect of a team as the root of all evil but several things contributed, and most could not be controlled. Who knew DJ would would wig out? Who know Ladson and Ngata would not be the next great WRs? Who know some of our D would shelter in place waiting on the draft?

I would quibble a bit as Scott/Elliot mentored under Morris, and sharing responsibilities also likely eased their transition to OC while Streeter did not... but yeah, as I said it CAN work out (as it undoubtedly has with Dabo). But more times than not, going and getting someone with an established history of success will do better.

I agree with you that the offensive failure is multifaceted, that's what has made it so frustrating. We were bad LAST year with Eliot at OC, we actually improved this year across the board statistically. But still, something seems off with the offense.
Talent dropoff? Sure.
QB position shenanigans (including not wanting to switch out an obviously struggling QB)? Absolutely.
Injuries? Most definitely.
Stale offensive scheme? Possibly.

But even given all of that, I just don't know that hiring from within off of a staff that had the >100 ranked offense for most of 2020 is a recipe for success.

Now maybe Streeter was hamstrung by a QB with the yips (almost certainly true). And maybe he's not being allowed to change the scheme to his liking (possibly true?)... and maybe with Cade he opens things up and we really see the engine roar back to life this next year. I hope that's the case. However, in MULTIPLE post game pressers I've hear him say something to the effect of 'Yeah, we kind of forgot about the running game'. That does NOT inspire confidence and is on no one else but him.

If we had UGAs OC this year our results would not likely be very different. The guy looked like a genius because he had top tier talent at every position. The D could not scheme to stop a specific aspect as they could simply switch gears. We had that ability in 2018 but the landscape has shifted and we were caught flat footed. Note TCU uses the portal and has an innovative offense and a top OC but got plastered last night because UGA was significantly more talented.

This is not to say there are not things we should improve on like scheme, offensive identity, play calling or player development but we will never get back to the NC unless we find ways to improve our level of talent.

places was Kevin Steele. Had been a DC, head coach in college and the NFL. How'd he work out? Chad had one year of college experience. Venables had basically been demoted at OU. Elliott and Scott had never been coordinators.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Steele was actually a brilliant defensive mind

2

Jan 10, 2023, 12:26 PM

But he was fresh from the NFL and over complicated things for the young defensive players, which is why his defenses didn't work at Clemson. Later he had great defenses at Auburn.

This backwards way of thinking blows my mind. Less experience is better. Get the guy with the lowest pedigree. All because you found lightning in a bottle once.

LIghtning in a bottle once?

Brandon Streeter coached two QB's to National Championships each plus Heisman finalists for both. Oh yeah a #1 pick and the #1 richest QB contract in NFL history followed. He managed around a 2-season head case, keeps bringing in top QB recruits, and we look poised to take a major step forward now, unless Cade's late season success was simply a mirage.

Jeff Scott and Tony Elliott OC'd two National Championship seasons, with different styles and player types to work with each go. They haven't exactly lit the world on fire yet since moving onward and upward, but that's another story. When they were here, these ZERO experienced OC's made history.

Steele was good, brilliant maybe, but with 3 years of install time to work with, failed here. But NFL pedigree and all, right? Does a single soul on here fault Dabo for making that change then?

BV had not blown the doors off at OK with running the defense, getting demoted to co-DC prior to being hired here. He subsequently thrived for years here following, as did our Tiger D. Another one hit wonder?

Our current DC was about to be Brent's first hire. We promoted him instead to keep him. First year performance marginal, but the buy-in and belief of legit NFL bound talent to stay and play another year under him, along with the absolute Dudes that signed this year out of high school, tell me all I really need to know about his leadership and capabilities, at least for those who matter.

You might want to revisit the directions of thinking you seem to be perplexed by.

To be fair, UGA fans weren't too happy with Monken at the time. They seemed to think he was beneath them.

If anything, the moral of that hire is "trust the coach, he knows what he wants and what will work based on what he wants to do."

Sure UGA looked good last night. Playing a team without a pass rush. Without a def line.
Outmatched.

So you say Monken is that good?
So UGA had 100 yards less against Tennessee than Clemson had. Yet Clemson had a first time starter and several weak areas.

So, this does not fit your jealousy narrative.

Always making jabs at Dabo. You failed again.

UGA looked good due to players, talent, and opposition.

TCU doesn't have a pulse on defense. They usually win high
scoring games. Ga. is the best defense they played all year.
There are a bunch of teams that could score many times on
TCU.

Monken really wasn't great at either of his last 2 stops (Tampa Bay or Cleveland) before being hired by Georgia. He managed to be in the right place at the right time with the Georgia position though. Sometimes it seems hiring coordinators is a bit of a crapshoot....

close to Clemson and our athletics programs as it's been portrayed, why would you throw so much hate and shade on Daniel High School athletes like you do on here so often, when going after the football coaches? Anyone with an ounce of knowledge of Clemson knows how tied to the school Daniel is, what with children of faculty, staff, coaches in all sports, their staffs, etc. Daniel's graduates litter our classrooms and playing fields regularly, whether at a scholarship level or not. It's the nature of proximity and many common bonds.

Are you actually ignorant of this reality due to being a complete phony? Or is it that anything you can muster up to denigrate Clemson football and needle Clemson fans is fair game due to your loathing of our football fans and the historic successes we've experienced of late?

This wasn't the topic of your OP. However, you've proven to be a disingenuous troll and instigator time and again that it's incumbent upon some to point out what a total #### you are and help others caught up in your pathetic antics peel the curtain back to see what is truly lurking underneath - a sad, decrepit, butthurt Vampire whose existence on here is to suck the air and joy out of Clemson nation.

And sorry to inform you of this, but we are all pulling for our basketball team to keep up this great start and make a post-season run - we are long overdue and relish the opportunity. Is this amped up hate bombing you're into some kind of ploy to actually turn people on here against basketball in the process due to you being such a full-on turd? It sure comes across that way, and it would fit your schtick.

Go Tigers. The real Tigers. Not the phony trolls.

Jan 10, 2023, 12:16 PM

It worked with Elliot/Scott combination. But they were in a staff lead by Chad Morris that was on the rise.

Last year our offense struggled. That's a kind word to say our offense was one of the worse in the country. It was a time to consider letting people go, not promoting them.

I honestly thought Streeter should have been let go last year. His QB progression from his players were at best questionable.
