I was proud of myself today but only for a minute

Oct 17, 2021, 9:16 PM

I got through the playing of Taps without having my eyes totally tear up during the Greenwood and Laurens Counties' Veteran's Hall of Heroes program. But then they played dirty and played the song Sounds of Silence while showing a slide show of scenes of wives and children distraught while hugging caskets and tombstones, gravely wounded soldiers covered in blood, folded flags being presented to family members, and soldiers on their knees weeping in front of boots on the ground in front of helmets atop the bayoneted rifles of their fallen friends. The final straw that caused my wife to hand me a wad of Kleenex was a wedding ceremony where the couple consisted of a beautiful young lady and a severely disfigured groom, reminding me of the couple I saw at Walter Reed and will never forget even though I was only around them for a couple of minutes. He had lost vision in both eyes and every facial feature was completely altered but she held onto his hands as if her love for him would last forever. The room today was darkened at that point in the ceremony so I don't know if anyone else was affected like I was- I will never hear that song again without the words having a more profound meaning than before.

What a touching post. This old Korean vet would have been unashamedly matching you tear for tear.

Bless you, bro. My saddest moment was looking at the names of two dear long-time friends' on the Vietnam memorial; both were KIA in Vietnam while I was there.
