I was just thinking about how frustrating it’s been seeing 5 star players

fail to reach their potential as Clemson footballers. Whether it was Hunter Johnson, Demarckus Bowman, or DJ Uiagaleilei, we are always left with a sense of disappointment and a lot of unanswered questions.
Thankfully, this isn’t an issue with our basketball program under Coach Brownell. I can’t think of a single 5 star player he’s recruited who has failed to develop as predicted.
Maybe Dabo can learn a thing or two from Brad after all.
Go Tigers!

Hey Judge. Like your Clemson basketball knowledge. Do you know the name of the first Clemson basketball player who had at least 20 points and at least 20 rebounds in the same ACC game? Just checking you out. BTW what year was it?

Tree would have been my first choice too as he was back in my day. I will take a SWAG and say Banks McFadden.

I'm down to two, Donnie Mahaffey or Tommy Smith and I am going to go with Donnie as my first choice.

Points galore!

Don't know about rebounds, likely just few. Maybe 20 in a season. But points aplenty. Saw him many times in Littlejohn while I was still in elementary school. Top 10 below for single game scoring. Saw Skip Wise, too, in his brief collegiate career.
Single Game Rk Player Points Season Opponent 1 James Erwin 58 1911–12 Butler Guards 2 J.W. Stribling 50 1915–16 Erskine 3 Bill Yarborough 46 1954–55 South Carolina Butch Zatezalo 46 1968–69 Wake Forest 5 Butch Zatezalo 43 1969–70 NC State Will Solomon 43 1999–00 Virginia 7 Will Solomon 41 2000–01 Georgia Tech 8 Bill Yarborough 40 1954–55 Virginia 9 Choppy Patterson 39 1960–61 The Citadel 10 Bill Yarborough 38 1955–56 Duke Butch Zatezalo 38 1968–69 Wake Forest Skip Wise 38 1974–75 Pennsylvania

I was gonna guess Tree as well. He was in HS a few miles up the road where I was in college.
How about Stan Rome? But, he probably never got 20 rebounds.

Angel or Maxwell or????
Sep 12, 2022, 8:41 PM
|
|
Due to disinterest in MNF, some incomplete research (Top 10 from Wikipedia) shows David Angel and Earle Maxwell with 21 rebounds against an ACC foe. Both at 21 (Maxwell vs UNC in 60-61,Angel vs UVA in 72-73). Did either score 20? The missing data point (#11 with 20 rebounds) may hold the answer.
Tommy Smith with 30 rebounds vs UGA in 54-55. That's a bunch.
Single Game Rk Player Rebounds Season Opponent 1 Tommy Smith 30 1954–55 Georgia 2 Donnie Mahaffey 25 1962–63 Georgia 3 Donnie Mahaffey 24 1962–63 The Citadel Tree Rollins 24 1973–74 Delaware 5 Tree Rollins 23 1976–77 Tennessee Tech Tree Rollins 23 1976–77 Maryland 7 David Angel 22 1971–72 Auburn Tree Rollins 22 1975–76 Harvard Tree Rollins 22 1975–76 Baptist 10 Earle Maxwell 21 1960–61 North Carolina David Angel 21 1972–73 Virginia Dale Davis 21 1988–89 North Carolina Dale Davis 21 1990–91 SC State

It is either #1 or #2 because he said it was before Tree Rollins and those are the only ones with at least 20 rebounds before Tree Rollins. Mahaffey did it twice and Smith once. Since Mahaffey did it twice I thought he might have scored 20 pts in one of those games so he was my first choice but then again, Tommy got 30 rebounds in the one game and if you assume a lot of those might have been offensive rebounds then you might also assume he put a bunch of those back up for points in the paint.

It was Maxwell 21pts 20 boards. Smith was 1st to 20-20 club, but not in an ACC game.

I believe Tree's 1st game at Clemson he had a 20 - 20 night.
How about mid 50s Bill Yarborough as Clemson's 1st 20-20 man.

How many 5-stars has Dabo not "developed", and how does it compare to every other program in America.
For the life of me, I can't understand why you're allowed to troll about football like a pathetic coot. You need to be put on vacation during football season.

Because his system sucks and nobody worth a ### wants to play in it. And obviously has no real accomplishments which adds to the dilemma.
12 seasons. A top 40 salary with TWO top 40 finishes in 12 years.
How many 4 and 5 stars has he signed? How many players left here better when they came?
You need to be banned, troll. Don't come back until basketball when we cam all laugh at your futility.

Keep in mind the play-in game was with OP's players, which was the best roster he's ever had. It was a game to "play into" the real tourney.. where we lost 1st round.
So yeah, I misspoke. Two wins ever, and a #38 salary. With great facilities and support.
Anything else?

That team and the 1996-97 team were the best I’ve watched. That 96-97 team hit a wall at seasons end, but they made the Sweet 16, and had #1 Seed Minnesota down six with about three minutes left in OT. They were definitely good enough to have made the Final Four that year. They absolutely destroyed Kentucky in an early season game. The 17-18 team was a straight up Final Four Team as well. If they had Grantham, I think they would have beat Kansas and made the Final Four. Arguably, the Cliff Dweller had some better regular season teams than either of those teams, but I think that 96-97 and 17-18 teams were the best I have seen.

Lol. When you were gone from last late January and didn't come back till March when Neff sent letter indicating Brad is coming back next season? Once the Tigers start about 7-13, you will be gone with Brad, or back with the new Clemson Basketball Coach as your avatar once he is hired..

No he isn’t. I think he’s going to have a good year.

Unfortunately, I don’t think our coaches are able or willing to devise a game plan to best use his skills.

How many 5-stars have you written off as "failures"

And how does it compare to other teams.
The fact of the matter is we've succeeded at levels above our overall talent level.

Where's the list of 5 star players that Brownell has

successfully recruited? I'm sure the Mods would make an exception to their rule against lists to see that list.

You can add World Championships to that list.

Heck, Dabo hasn't even sniffed a semi-final there in all his years here. All he's mustered is conference titles and natties. Sad.

I’d love to see him change the trend for sure. Very close with Brice Johnson and Zion Williamson but just as his predecessors before him… it’s close to impossible.

Brad can't even get 4 star talent since PJ Hall. And, you mentioned having a great staff. We had a top recruiter in Coach Dean and Brad let him go to UGA. I guarantee non one on this staff is good as Coach Dean in the recruiting circles. He was responsible for getting top 100-150 players Dawes, Chase Hunter, Schiefflin, and the frosh Wiggins and Godfrey. Oh, and was getting a top 25 transfer when Llewelyn commited, but Brad couldn't hang on to him. Brad depends on his assistans to get all thecrecruits, because he can't recruit worth crat. Coach Dean Leaving will be the end of Brad soon, trust me...

Drop BB baseline to 3 stars and redo your comparison.

That would seem more appropriate.
