I want what's best for Clemson University

Jul 18, 2022, 1:20 PM

but I have to wonder. Will The ACC be able negotiate any kind of contract with these large (power hungry) bureaucratic companies that will be lucrative, or even to protect themselves or their member Universities? I am hoping they can, since I am not in favor of how the suits and executives for these large media companies seem to be breaking things up, nor seem to care much about some of the educational institutions under their contracts.

I am not much for hype or B.S. I know it sounds hokey, but it's true that most often what glitters in not gold, and the grass can seem greener on the other side. I know many of our fans have been drinking the "tv" kool aid, sometimes out of envy partially, or boredom, to move to another conference.

If The ACC is unable to protect themselves, or be proactive, in these unstable (shark infested?), business transactions, I understand the necessity.

However, if The ACC and their member institutions can find a reasonable solution, do we really want to move to a larger conference that often seems to care more about their hype and "brand," and less about what's ethically best for their member institutions, their student athletes, students, or alumni?

We do have a unique identity in The ACC, and a long history of championships and tradition. Do we necessarily want to give all that up, to possibly be absorbed into a larger conference, more watered down, partially homogenized, or stuck in the gridlock or quicksand of their own issues, for the unforeseen future?

Respectfully, these all seems like facts and realities that ought to be carefully considered.

If there is a major change on the horizon, I hope the Board of Trustees will vote to take a significant portion of that revenue annually, and continue to grow the University's endowment and research, so that Clemson can continue to get stronger in many of the ways that truly matter. As the university looks to the future, most endeavors can often be accomplished better, from a position of strength, intelligence, and influence.

exit money wont be an issue

there would be a law suit but it would get settled out of court for less just like in the past.

It is all about Clemson's desire.

May I be the first to echo your remarks regarding our breaking from the ACC, or the conference realigning with other conferences.
First: Would you rather be a middle of the pack team in the SEC, or continue to dominate the
conference we are in.
Athletes consider us as an anomaly in college football: Think of the athlete as a good human first
gains us much leverage with families of our players, in not just football, but all sports.
Our league ( many despise) distinguises itself as having highest academic standing, while achieving on the field at a high level. Not so with many of our competing conferences.
That means something to me.
Also, sports only members should consider this: If you were a coach, athlete, Iptay supporter or any other component of our fine University, who loves to play for national championships, what avenue would be more difficult? ACC, or SEC (for instance)?
Do you honestly think we would have won 2 football national championships in the last 5 years in the SEC?
So, lets get off the leave the ACC bandwagon, and appreciate where we are in a league that actually means something geographicall (We are all pretty much along the Atlantic Coast.)
No other conference can claim this now. You want to travel to Austin or Norman on a regular basis?
Not me.

Well, we have already been scheduling SEC teams. And mathematically, the current difference when comparing conference schedules, is more like +1 / -1 W or L a season.

But the more teams you add to a supposed "super" conference, the more crowded it's going to get in terms of competition.

I also think there is a lot of bias and jealousy in competitive sports, so many from other leagues who disrespect our current conference are talking from some place of partial resentment or envy. There are a lot of quality institutions and people in our current league.

Not many people are taking a truly long-range view of the situation. I look at the changes as ESPN first and then FOX experimenting on universities to see just how far their greed goes. Currently they haven’t found the limits. Do you think they really believed OU and Texas and then USC and UCLA would abandon all sanity in the pursuit of a few more tens of millions of dollars? It was probably an off-the-wall idea they threw out and the greedy ######## jumped right on it. So given they haven’t reached the end of their greed what do you think is next? The only way to get more worth from the conference contracts is to weed out the ne’er do wells (looking at you ##### and Vandy among others) and make way for other powers. I can see a relegation tournament taking place and that in itself would spark some more interest sort of like Squid Games. You haven’t seen desperation until you have 4-5 schools vying for 1 or 2 spots in the money leagues in order to avoid a couple decades of old man obscurity and his sister poverty. Don’t put it past the likes of ESPN and FOX.

and yes, ESPN is toxic & uncaring about the Universities and Student/Athlete, imho.

The ship has sailed for the ACC. The ACC wanted to be "academic" when the SEC and the BIG wanted to be athletic. We can't bring in second and third tier Football schools be a competitive conference. The top tier schools all have homes. The only option for Clemson is to get off the sinking ship.
