I understand Elliott wanting to be a head coach.

I also understand a good deal of frustration over taking more than his fair share of blame for the offensive production this year. I can see why Virginia would be an attractive job. However, why would he, or any coordinator wanting to be a head coach, see Duke as a place to establish yourself? Since 1966 the average tenure of a Duke coach is 6.1 years. That is with Cutcliffe being there for fourteen years. It's not a job than can offer an historical winning culture, championship opportunities, or coaching longevity. Take out Spurrier and no Duke coach was able to springboard to bigger and better things. What's the draw there?

Not really a difficult decision to take the HC at Duke

Dec 8, 2021, 11:01 AM

If I was 41 and had the chance to double my $1.8m salary I would take it. Let's say he gets a deal worth $4 million a year and he lasts 5 years. He is basically set for life. No coach is going to be successful long term at Dook. After he gets canned or quits he can either get another OC job, take another HC job, probably at a smaller college or go into broadcasting. It's a win winn situation...

Fluxus®
"As I watched the game yesterday I couldn't help but feel crushed. We beat Furman by 4 TDs, but to me it looked like we got whipped."

"George Bush, we are reliably informed by the media, has the IQ of a moron, though how he matriculated from Yale and Harvard or flew an F-106 will remain an unexplained mystery. Doubtless his father bribed the airplane to fly itself."

Every head coach has to start somewhere

Spurrier started there (at least for college) and did pretty well.

If he does a decent job

Dec 8, 2021, 11:53 AM

He can use it as a stepping stone to a better job

This is it right here.

If the job was good they wouldn't be hiring. TEs job is to use this job to prove he can be successful at a program that historically been a doormat outside of a few years here and there.

Duke needs someone like a Mike Leach. They need a what's this guy going to do next guy. Spurrier used to be that. Tony isn't that at all.
