offense. Here are the winner's scores: 95 87 67 72 86 71 96 85 Only one winner scored in the 60's. Based on this it could be opined that teams that score 70 and above are in the elite, upper echelon of college basketball. Teams that score in the 50's and 60's will not win many games.

Bad statistics. Your sample is not representative. You can't claim a single round of scores is representative of the whole. Plus you have games like the Bama game in which the previous game they only scored 66 to advance.
Tell that to the former defending champs. UVA proved the contrary and often defense wins championships. Heck that is what Syracuse always seems to make deep runs tourney time.
You are also missing the other note than at lot of the S16 teams held opponents to only scoring in the 50s. Cuse, FSU, USC, Creighton, UCLA, Loyola.
Covid a weird year with huge point swings. Close games are not as common and it is either a 8point win or a 20 point win.

The “low possession” crowd is not gonna like this ...

And will cite UVA as THE Example. But just retort with “even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in a while”.
9 times out of 10 what you said wins.
Even Charles Barkley agree with what you said. And I guarantee Sir Charles knows the game better than anyone here.

Tony Bennett (UVA) has underperformed his seeding in almost every year in the tourney. His style does not work perennially.

GOOD non-ACC teams beat UVA's style consistently

ACC play has a "style" ... programmed, well organized ... predictable
Put up a more free-style take it to the hoop team and they get flabbergasted. FSU being the exception ... then again they just "play" !

ten years? The ACC...and it isn't even close! Five of the last ten...six of the last eleven! Yeah...the ACC is really flabbergasted a lot!

I think you’re onto something here.

So that’s why Brad always says we lost because the players didn’t make enough shots.
It’s all starting to add up.

So we are exploring the possibility that winning teams may score more than losing teams?

sacrificed to produce those numbers. An SI article about the low possession trend quoted:
John Wooden: "The team with the most mistakes will likely win." Bobby Knight: "The team with the fewest mistakes will likely win."
Both were hard nosed defensive guys. Wooden wanted turnovers and rebounds resulting in higher risk offense: go score points. Knight, and now Bennett, wanted to play defense by holding the ball. For a while, Knight was right. Watching Gonzaga, I hope they are now right. It has happened in football, and no one would make the case the defenses are slacking.

Therefore, shoot the ball dang it ! It ain’t going in by itself !
Yes, defense is important too. You use that to hinder the other teams efforts to put the ball in the basket

means having multiple players that are good shooters and can score with consistency, all working in an offense that produces plenty of opportunities.
