"Air Raid Offense"

Aug 16, 2022, 12:30 PM

Kyle Richardson was known for running the "Air Raid Offense" at Northwestern. His offensive philosophy was to be physical, go fast, take downfield shots, and impose your will on the defense. Reminds me of Chad Morris in that regard. He is now the Passing Game Coordinator and TE Coach. I think the TE's will be heavily involved and it will be interesting to see the offensive "tweeks" this season. Just please scrap the friggin' bubble screen!!!

That not quite what Chad Morris does with his offense...

but there are some similarities.

Morris likes to run a spread offense built around the running game meshed with the passing game. It's an up-tempo style with a lot of motion in an attempt to confuse the defense, make the defense adjust pre-snap, and create mismatches in coverage.

True. Very similar in the attacking up-tempo approach.

That’s one thing I noticed last year. We hardly used any man in motion or formation adjustments. Once we lined up just snapped the ball. Defenses never had to make adjustments once we lined up so never created mismatches or cause any confusion.

Motion also helps the offense ID the coverage.

I bit more pre-snap info couldn't hurt our QBs' decision making

I think that was deliberate...

Aug 16, 2022, 1:18 PM [ in reply to Re: That not quite what Chad Morris does with his offense... ]

because of DJ's struggles. I think they were trying to slow the game down for him and not require him to make so many pre-snap reads.

I agree. DJ and the offense got better when we stopped asking hm to do pre-snap reads and run RPO. Once we settled in and started calling run set plays and set pass plays two things happened as far as I can tell.

DJ was able to focus on the task at hand, per the called play instead of trying to figure out what he needed to do.

And

The o-line knew that they should run block or pass block, and not do the wishy washy RPO block. Knowing Shippley was behind them and they were by God running the ball seemed to let the o-line do that job better.

But even so, some play-action would be helpful without triggering any additional need to think too much on DJ or change the o-lines mechanisms.

I hate to say it about the kid, but I think not being able to make quick and accurate pre or post snap reads are what caused his struggles

1 or 2 bubble screens per game is more than enough.. I'm hoping you are right about changes in our offensive scheme. We were way too predictable last year.

Bubble screens are fine

Aug 16, 2022, 2:50 PM

If guys actually create a bubble for the receiver

2024 orange level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We run more of a non-bubble, non-screen

Aug 16, 2022, 3:32 PM

With no blocking and inaccurate passing. You would think this would be super confusing to the defense and thereby a really successful play. Alas, hasnt worked out that way to this point.

My daughter went to Northwestern High School. I think Richardson may have still been an assistant coach when she was there and became head coach soon after she graduated. We continued going to their games after she left and he had some really exciting offenses there. Exciting, quick and high scoring.

Mahlzahn and Morris learned and grew their offenses in h.s.
