I think DJ may be one of those kids left

w/o a seat when the music stops in the portal and end up going to a lower level school unless he is willing to be a backup. Given the body of work the last 2 years and the stark difference in the ACC championship game when CK came in, it is obvious there was a talent issue. Don’t mean to harp on a good kid, I am just so fascinated how the QB we saw at WF is the same one we saw against UofSc18??

He is the number 2 QB in the transfer portal. Has showed flashes of great play. Lol any coach worth anything got to think they can do a better job than QB whisper Streeter. They hate Clemson fans have for DJ is unreal. You don’t make the playoff without him in 2020.

Yeah, but we probably don't beat BC the week before without him and he played so well against ND that year that the loss really didn't hurt us.

Maybe his size will but I don’t think the former 5* status means anything. My first boss stopped caring about my engineering degree 5 minutes after he hired me. It was all about performance after that.

I don't think he'll be left completely high and dry. He has better physical tools than some of the other Clemson QBs who have transferred out and they mostly ended up somewhere. I mean, DJ was a disappointment, but I'd play him over Hunter or Taisun in a heartbeat.
I think what will be very interesting is if a P5 program takes a chance on him. Would Chip Kelly take a chance (as so many mention UCLA as a landing spot), when he has the program on the rise and can't afford to make a mistake and take a step back with the program?
Our view is clouded because we are fans, but did Oklahoma fans think Spencer Rattler was as bad as we thought DJU was? And he at least had a... mid-tier P5 landing spot.
We all want the best for DJ, but it will be fascinating to see what happens.

I don't think there's a talent issue with DJU. He's got first-round physical ability; he compares pretty well physically to a Ben Roethlisberger. DJU's problem is between the ears, he's got an extraordinarily shaky psyche and I also question how well he processes information. He never even figured out how to consistently make the right read in an RPO, for instance...which is basic and it's the staple meat-and-potatoes of Clemson's offense.
I dunno. Maybe the right coach can reach him. It wouldn't shock me if some QB whisperer like Lane Kiffin got ahold of him and turned DJU right around. But he will need the right coach to do that, too, and I could see him managing to fail even at a mid-major-level school, too.
Whatever. I wish the guy well...but I am, uhm, excited to see what Cade Klubnik brings to the table. I think we pretty much all are after the last two years.

when they recruited DJ. He was never a dual threat QB. He was ALWAYS a pro-style QB so running the RPO was not his forte.

He won too many games to be called a bust.

But I don't care, he was a bust. The risk was high but we rolled the dice and came up snake eyes. We may see that again if Cole turns out like I think.
A part of our recruiting issues the year DJ signed was TL. No one wanted to compete with him and we were doomed to spend at least one year with a 2nd rate QB or a raw freshman.

Correct. If he goes to an air raid offense, he’ll light it up. Prior to today I was hoping for him to go to MsSt, but not to be. Riley at USC or maybe WI now. TCU w Sonny Dykes?

Oh, the irony that a great kid bought into the culture but otherwise didn't fit. I think both sides wanted the "marriage" to work so bad that they didn't pay attention to the details.

near TL's if we're talking about throwing a football. What DJ needs is a year's vacation from football. There is no fixing his problem, it's up to him to fix it.

His mechanics are perfect.

I didn't compare anything else but his mechanics. If you doubt, pull film on TL and check his arm slot then check DJ's. That determined the horizontal placement of the ball. Check the stride compared to the release point. The two QBs are nearly identical and both are perfect.
I can talk about the difference if you know what they are. I'm not helping you here.

I actually agree with this. DJ's arm talent is amazing. He could easily hit the side of the barn at 100 yards away. Problem is it'd be the neighbors barn. Kid really does have a cannon for an arm though!

Yeah there are plenty of college QBs with DJs physical attributes who were never able to put it all together for whatever reason.

in light of the way he played over the last two years, where some program, particularly an upper-tier Power 5 school, just gifts him a starting job at QB. He's likely going to have to compete and earn it. That said, he'll land somewhere but it may be a mid to lower- tier program unless he is prepared to compete for the starting job.

Needs to change positions preferably a TE position I would think with his size. I would try something differently if I had NFL aspirations.

He wasn't just your average, run-of-the-mill, 5 star QB coming out of HS. He was the dammdest QB prospect anybody had seen in years. He was a 6-4 240 monster with a rocket arm... he could throw a football 80 yards, and was big enough to run over a lot of defenders. And he led his team to the state championship at the highest level in Calif. Talent, leadership, smarts... he checked all the boxes. If there was ever a "can't miss" prospect, he was it.
Hel1, I remember some recruiting analysts saying he might be better then DW or TL. It's mind boggling how this all played out. Forget the ceiling, you would've thought the worst case scenario was First Team All-ACC and some All America votes, even if he didn't lead us to the promised land.

I don't agree. I see him going to a place with a focus on offense and a coaching staff that believes they can turn him around. The talent is there looking at high school and his first year at Clemson. Even in this year's Wake game he was outstanding. It just doesn't appear consistently and I believe with the right staff and school, he can find it again. Hope so...

He threw for over 6,000 yards in three years of college and was the #1 overall pick in the draft. I thought he was an outstanding QB, and he flourished in the right system for him (which can also true for DJ).
