TNET: Steel City Letdown: Mistake-prone Tigers lose to Pitt in erratic performance

Steel City Letdown: Mistake-prone Tigers lose to Pitt in erratic performance

Pitt did what it’s been doing in recent weeks, throwing the football and playing fairly good defense. Clemson did what it’s been doing in recent weeks, struggling on offense and making enough mistakes in a game to last a season. The result was a Pitt victory at Heinz Field Saturday afternoon that all but ended Clemson’s ACC title hopes and leads to even more questions about the program. Full Story »

Give Pickett and all those 6 -year players a ton of credit but the game was there for us, the D was playing well and he had a chance to control the game. Once again our offense gets an F. Its gone beyond poor coaching at this point as injuries have built up and no one can make a play. Let's just hope we can somehow win 6 games and get to a bowl so we have one streak stay alive. The fall down is sure not as much fun as the climb up is it?

Defense gave up 464 yards and maybe deserved a D minus.

Such a mess. Injuries certainly aren't helping, but man do we look bad. Worst season start since what... 1994? I guess this season is a bust. Kept hoping it would turn around... Maybe we go 6-6 and get to a sweet bowl.

Warm up the transfer portal and send a few out and grab a few JC transfers. Because what we currently have only guarantees wins against Presbyterian and Converse. We played like Ken Hatfield gave the pregame wake.

Re: Was really tough to watch - 10 of 18 on 3rd Down?

Oct 23, 2021, 7:18 PM

Had to turn off the sound the entire second half. It was positive when we cranked up the tempo. Just think, last 2 possessions of the 1st and the 1st possession of the 2nd resulted in 21 Pitt points...
As Porky Pig used to say, "That's All Folks!"

^&*^%&* is over for the night and tomorrow is a new day. I'll be back cheering (hopefully without the %^!!!) next week.

The pick 6 shuttle pass was a back breaker.

Season is over. We will end up 7-5 maybe 8-4....Dabo will not win 10 games this year. DJ is a loser as a starter at Clemson. DJ is 5-4 overall as a starter; 4-3 this year and he was 1-1 last year. Cade cannot get here fast enough. I hope Cade is still "All In". Maybe we will start Hunter Helms next week.

8-5 or 7-5, are you kidding? What team have you been watching? We are getting worse, not better and the injuries are multiplying and only going to add to our misery. We will be lucky to be 6-5 heading into the SC game and could easily be 5-6 at that point. If we don't play better than we are right now, we won't beat FSU, Louisville, or WF. We should handle UConn but the rest will be very difficult. Maybe we beat SC 6-3 and finish 6-6 and get to go to the Pinstripe Bowl but that is going to be about the best we can hope for.

Its time for the kid from california to pack his trash and go back to that $hithole ....he does not have the mental or physical ability to play at this level that is quite apparent ....if i was Dabo and Elliot to think about give some of that money back to the clemson people...you would expect the clemson to put a competitive team on the field..but we can't...

Shipley's drop

Oct 23, 2021, 7:36 PM

Was it.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Shipley's drop

Oct 23, 2021, 7:57 PM

There were 3 "its" ... Shipley's drop (7 points), B.Spector's late Q2 personal foul penalty on 3rd and long (Pitt drove down field then and scored 7 points), and DJ's breathtakingly terrible shovel pass Pick 6 (7 points).

The 2021 team can't throw away 21 points to anyone (other than SC State and Connecticut) and have a chance at winning.

Re: Just the truth

Oct 23, 2021, 7:55 PM

Just want to hear the truth and not try to spin, or what could have happened, or if it weren't for, or because of. This deep in the season the Tiger offense is just awful. I know players have to block, run, tackle, catch but when you don't give them everything to work with then it's not all their fault. Been holding off saying this but TE needs to go at the end of the season. When it was 3rd and 10 and a QB keeper was called then it told me there is no trust to make a first down but just put it in position to kick a field goal. I now believe he is afraid to call an attacking game plan. I know there where spots of good play but once again the inability to convert on 3rd down put the defense in a bad position. The reality is that it won't get any better and there are more losses coming. Either TE will man up and resign or Dabo will have to make a man up call and replace him. When he does go he needs to take Caldwell with him and they might not be the only ones. Surly I can't be the only one to see not only has the wheels come off the bus but it's up on blocks. There are more games to play and it will be for pride or not. There is no team in left on the schedule that is afraid of this offense and that is just the Truth.

Re: Just the truth - - - Unpopular retort = truth

Oct 23, 2021, 8:03 PM

Not to paint this terrible loss as having anything positive, but T.Elliott called good plays.

DJ's shovel pass / pick-6 ... any QB with the remotest situational awareness knows to eat the ball and take the sack (which for the lateral-movement-impaired DJ is the correct move in that situation) instead of mechanically tossing the ball forward. This ain't a T.Elliott play-calling problem.

Beaux Collins and Ajou Ajou drop passes (as always) ... this is not a T.Elliott "play calling" problem.

Will Shipley drops a sure TD pass ... another T.Elliott bad play call? Come on.

It's easy to blame the OC when the players cluck-up the good plays, but this loss was NOT on T.E. by a long shot.

Who would you throw to? We won Championships with speed on both sides of the ball and we have not recruited speed the last couple of years. After Bockhorst went down, so did the running game.

Re: TNET: Steel City Letdown: Mistake-prone Tigers lose to Pitt in erratic performance

Oct 23, 2021, 7:59 PM

Look, we lost to a better team today. Pitt, is old, experienced and tough and we are young, inexperienced and hurt. Pickett looked like Trevor and our defense had no answer. We were missing 3 receivers and Pitt's D backs were laughing at how slow we are and how many drops we had. We are simply not very good at too many positions this year.

folks kidding themselves about improvement in offensive game planning. Go ahead, keep it up, the body of evidence cannot be denied. If this continues the same results will be had next year.

Re: i still see there are

Oct 23, 2021, 9:27 PM

Right now it is everything - D is SLOW but if the O helps even a little bit we can win with it - as long aw we don't continue to think a slow LB can cover a WR deep!
Our receivers are slow, can't get open and can't catch the ball on the rare occurrence it comes close enough to them to have a chance even if they are put in good spots. Tonight was not play calling but had Dabo done what Ryan Day did and correct an obvious problem NOW and not wait until the end of the year or ever to do it we might have done like OSU and crawled back into the hunt. Who knows but now no one on the offensive side of the ball, players or coaches, have any confidence or any idea of what to do about it. Its not that the we don't have ability but yet here we are.
FSU had the same thing happen to them over the last few years and you can bet they are now EXPECTING that a big victory at Death Valley will be a big step in their return.

Coach Swinney said no Staff changes, but also said starting positions are up for grabs in practice next week. I think the latter is past due. Bench # 5 and start TJ. He looked good the time he was in game. He moved very well, threw some good passes and was very mobile in the pocket. Executed well and got some good runs to keep the ball moving. Coach Swinney said he was not making any staff changes and was going to stick with TE. I hope at end of the season, if we continue to under perform on offense, he makes some adjustments. I know the injury bug has hit the Tigers hard, but the next man up is not even working. We have been hit with the transfer portal by several players and it has hurt our depth and probably isn't over. I will continue to cheer for the Tigers and hope it turns around. GO TIGERS!!!
