I see UCF as Clemson was in 1981. With the way the system was set up during

Nov 2, 2018, 10:15 AM

The 70’s and 80’s I believe UCF could have won a NC going undefeated after play in one of the Major bowl games. We came out of no where in 1981 to win our 1st NC. If the rules and format were the same today UCF maybe last years NC’s. If it were not for the format of the polls of the 80’s we may not have that 1981 NC.

We need to give those guys a break and give them their due for winning 20 games without a defeat.

Go Tigers!
Go UCF!

Except Clemson was actually pretty dominant

Not every game

Nov 2, 2018, 10:25 AM

Beat 4-7 NC State 17-7, 4-6-1 Maryland 21-7.

I bet in the current system people would have gone crazy

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The low scores are due to the style of play

Nov 2, 2018, 10:36 AM

I was there for all of the games, even away, and we dominated every team we played, just not in the spread of the score.

Re: The low scores are due to the style of play

You should go back a check the scores we beat UGA 13-3 Tulane 13-5, NC State 17-7, Wofford at the time an NAIA school 45-10, the coots 29-13, Virginia 27-0 and Maryland 27-7. The only team we smoked was Wake Forest. We beat NC 10-8. Check out the other scores. We did not blow out but 1 team in 81 like we have this year.

Our defense is the reason we won the NC in 1981.

Wofford and Clemson were tied at 3 at the end of the 1st qtr

Nov 2, 2018, 11:17 AM

Heck, Wofford even lead 3 - 0 at one point.

Donald Igwebuike kicked a 52 yard field goal to tie the game.

The Terriers later scored the only touchdown Clemson would allow until Week 6 against Duke. They had more than 200 yards of offense in the first half (only two others would finish with more) and were the only ones all season to lead the Tigers in total time of possession.

Clemson wasn’t even scheduled to play Wofford but was left scrambling for an opponent after Villanova dropped its football program.

I remember it raining all night before the game. It was really cloudy and overcast until right about kickoff. The sun came out and it got really really hot !!!

You can not go by the final score for many of those games. The style of play was so different. Overall, teams did not score as many points back then.

I'm not sure this year's UCF team can hang with the OL's and DL's of big boy football.

They seem to have some pretty good skill talent, they would probably fare pretty well in the PAC-12

UCF went undefeated. We went undefeated in 1981 and Won NC. We played an average schedule in 81. Wofford, Wake Forest, Duke,
The only teams I remember playing that were ranked were NC, UGA, and Nebraska. We played Tulane, the coots, Kentucky, Virginia, NC State, Maryland and finished undefeated.

So far UCF has played decent teams like Memphis, Pitt, FAU and Temple. They have Navy and USF who are pretty good teams. I don’t know how many ranked teams they have played but it’s difficult to go undefeated in any conference 2 consecutive years if they go undefeated this year too.

I would like for Clemson to play UCF so they could measure where they really are as a program.

Nov 2, 2018, 1:26 PM

Yes, they have played decent teams this year. USF is probably the best team left on the schedule, aside from whoever they play in a bowl game. Navy may be historically good, but they are anything but good this year

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

BYU also got a title in that era in 1984

Pitt went 3-7-1 in 1984

And BYU beat like a 6-5 Michigan team in the bowl game.

They were also the only undefeated team in the nation...

Florida and Washington each had one loss while everyone else had two or more.

Clemson ins 1948 or 1950... maybe... since we were an unknown A&M school outside a major confernce.

The problem with 81 was that while maybe not a "powerhouse" national brand, we were already an established winner within out peer group... UCF was 0-12 in 2015

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Clemson played and defeated three top 10 teams in 1981...

Nov 2, 2018, 10:26 AM

Georgia (4), North Carolina (9) and Nebraska (4).

If UCF did that this year and was still undefeated, we probably wouldn't be having this discussion.

Exactly
The OP ignores the three top ten wins...
If UCF did that ...they’d be in the CFP playoff...
Clemson ‘81 ...does not compare to UCF

Correct, and add to that one of those top 10 wins was against reigning National Champion.

regular season in 81 (prior to the bowls). That same poll had UCF ranked #12 at the end of the 2017 regular season. Coaches Poll had Clemson #1 at the end of the regular season in 81, and the same poll had UCF #11 in 2017.

Two of the same polls we use today saw 81 Clemson and 17 UCF very differently.

you see. UCF is good no doubt, but let’s face it. Temple just laid 40 on them. For those who don’t believe in 40 times and “Star” rankings I’ll ask this. Do they run inside zone reads for 40 yds against Bama? Do they sneak that skinny post in against us or LSU? It’s the little fractions of a difference that make up the sum. Do they get all pass plays off against our front 4 with 7 in coverage? We can go on and on but I say no...they don’t.

Please. No Auburn references. We all know they didn’t want to be there. All kidding aside, I say, after watching last night, no, they have no right to be in the playoffs.

But 50% of ranked teams can’t fight there way up like we did in 1981. It’s a different system and pollsters have a different mind set in today’s college football world.

The proper comparison is BYU 1984, not Clemson 1981. We beat 3 top 10 teams along the way.

I'm glad we don't have that system anymore. There are at least 15 teams clearly better than UCF and for them to be awarded a national championship would be a slap in the face for all elite college football teams. UCF ain't one of them.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Because UCF would have beat the defending Natty Champs UGA?

Nov 2, 2018, 1:28 PM

And, they'd walk all over Nebraska?
