I really think the ACC is being smart and not overreacting

Jul 28, 2021, 5:39 PM

to this expansion nonsense. Makes me think that we now have a capable Commissioner who is going to take a “wait and see” stance. A lot can happen in the next few years and this SEC boondoggle could eventually blow up in their face. I am convinced that Texas does not realize what they are getting into. They have always been the top dog and called all the shots no matter what conference they were in. The SEC and Saben won’t let that happen.

How did that "wait and see" approach work out for Swoffy on the TV contract side of things...

Agreed, don't overreact, an impulsive decision won't necessarily make a positive difference, it could only dilute the ACC product and revenue share further. Clemson can keep winning the ACC and making the CFP every year and trust the process.

There is no way the ACC could react except by adding ND.

I think the ACC has no choices....

The lack of action - although it's only been a week since the Texas/OU news broke, give it time to see what other conferences do - is because the ACC has power moves they can make.

They can try and do whatever it takes to get ND in as a full-time member. But it won't happen because ND values independence.

After ND, there are no other brand names to go after that will join the ACC.

So, we have to bide our time for now.

Maybe we can form an alliance with the B1G or the SEC, something not on the level of combining conferences, but something that keeps our interests somewhat aligned. Our best move might be to combine with the B1G on some research projects. They value the AAU in the Big 10, and we have many great academic institutions. Maybe we leverage that to form an alliance of like-minded academic institutions that also play against each other on the field...

We could also plot to blow up the 12-team CFP. That might be our best move in the near future, although I think it will ultimately fail.

The ACC is not in a good spot in terms of revenue generation and TV deals. But the GOR has bought us some time to think things through. And we'll need that time, because we're currently in a weak spot.

Meant to say: "The lack of action - although it's only been a week since the Texas/OU news broke, give it time to see what other conferences do - is because the ACC doesn't have any power moves they can make.

The ACC only has defensive moves it can make against the SEC for the time being. It should start to form alliances with the Pac 12 and BIG in order to box in the SEC. The immediate move the three conferences should make is to BLOCK any expansion of the CFP. Sankey was simultaneously working with the Bix XII about expanding the playoffs to 12, while stealing its top two teams. The SEC wants to fill the 6 open slows with its teams and bring home the bacon.

Well, the conferences should keep the playoffs at 4 and watch the SEC powerhouses cannibalize each other in fighting for their 1, or at most, 2 playoff spots instead of 4 or 5 spots in the expanded playoffs. Reality will hit, for example, Oklahoma that they gave up a "guaranteed" spot in the playoffs for a death match with Alabama, LSU, AU, UGA, FLA, A&M for a shot in the playoffs.
