ACC hypotheticals

What would everyone's opinion be if ND became a full member and somehow WVU could get out of the Big 12, while also adding Penn State and UCF? A lot of ifs and lots of things would have to take place, but I can't think Penn State is too awful happy in their conference. I think UCF would jump at the chance. And I also believe that WVU would love it. The traveling is going to always be an issue for them.
Imagine an ACC North and South. The north consisting of Syracuse, Penn State, Pitt, Notre Dame, WVU, Virginia, VT, Louisville, and BC. The south consisting of Clemson, GT, FSU, UNC, NCST, Miami, Duke, UCF, and Wake Forest.
I know WVU didn't have the academics last time and they are in another conference, but "hypothetically" speaking, look at the conference we would have here. Is it the SEC? No. We could add Oregon, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, and Nebraska and the SEC would still talk bad about the ACC. How competitive would you guys consider the proposed conference above? I would say you play 9 conference games- 8 of those being in your division and 1 from the other division. Other 3 games would be us playing SC, a small school like Furman, SCST, or Troy and then try and pick up a home and home with Arkansas, Auburn, etc.
A potential season of Troy, Wake, UNC, FSU, Miami, UCF, Arkansas, Penn State, NCST, Duke, GT, and SC would be pretty strong.
What you guys think?

I'm confused, why isn't Clemson in the north?

Didn't a kid from Free Snowcrab University say he didn't even look into Clemson because he didn't want to go to a northern school?

Here's my answer...

No. The ACC is looking to maintain it's current academic integrity, membership, and stance.
Penn State will not leave the Big 10. Fact. Not going to happen. They are happy with their conference and money output. Scandal alone couldn't shut them down, nor will any ACC persuasion invoke them to foot the bill for a hefty buyout. They are happy with only competing with OSU and UM for the market/ recruits but are still growing as a program with TV money and Franklin even after scandal. They are content.
UCF May eventually join a power conference but I'm not sure it's us, yet. As previously mentioned, academics are big in the ACC. And if you can't get into UCF( given their enormous student body) then you can't get into Tri-County. They compete against the huge markets of UF and FSU and they just aren't there. Yet. Dominating CUSA and AAC are entirely different. Don't forget how many times, recently mind you, they've gone 3-5 in conference against CFB softies. A short string of success and BCS appearance doesn't make you Alabama, so much as it does, say, Utah. And what happened to them? Or BSU, for that matter. (See the correlation of good QB and coach, and once they're gone, they plummet.)
Lastly, WVU. They recently joined a power conference and it hasn't worked out. At all. Yes, they did get the best of us. Once. But they had NFL talent on those teams who fell under the radar of big schools. A genuine rare occurrence. But they've also struggled, at times, to take advantage of a weak Big East conference. Once VT, UofM, and BC left the Big East, some assumed it would be WVU every year in the BCS. Didn't happen for one reason or another.
Now I know I spoke of alleged ACC academic integrity and I know the problem in saying so. If Swoffie weren't commish, yes they'd be punished. But hey, given the corruption in NC right now, it reminds one of the "good ole boy system" right here in the sc justice system. Don't be myopic enough to ignore it but I understand your dismay. And disagreements.
In closing, nah, I don't see PSU, UCF, or WVU joining up for these and several more reasons. Point to the SU joining all ya want but theres more to that; A) television market B)basketball and C) CHECK OUT THEIR YEARLY ENDOWMENT! It surprised even me. It's a very large number!
Just it in a nutshell, leaving many other variables out as well. Hope it helps.
Sincerely, TB83

by adding Louisville who, from an acadmic standpoint, is ranked lower than West Virginia, and by completely turning a blind eye to UNC's blatant and unabashed academic fraud.

Disney and NASA money. It is huge. I think it is the next big thing in Florida and will compete with the big 3 in Florida at some time in the future.

Ugh...don't get me started on NASA

While I have no doubt there are some fine and very intelligent people at NASA who all have a true and genuine belief in what they’re doing, I firmly believe we should put all of that that brain power and hard work toward making where we are now, a place we know for a fact can sustain life, a better place to be.

America needs to be at the forefront of space either by government or public enterprises. I hated that we lost interest in space in the mid 70's. We should have a base on the moon right now and have landed on Mars. We should be tapping the resources of the moon and other heavenly bodies. My beliefs on this? Well you can blame it on my youth during the romantic years of NASA--like seeing the moon landing on TV (and watching Star Trek every afternoon after school(in color) on the NBC channel out of Augusta, GA in the early 70's).

I don't understand the compelling desire to land on Mars

I've never been but I think I can tell you pretty accurately what's up there; a whole lot of nothing. Mars is freezing cold, there is very little if any oxygen to breathe, no food to eat, and most likely no water either. The same goes for the moon
I'd rather spend all that NASA money on schools and infrastructure or on developing alternate sustainable fule alternatives so the US is no longer dependent on foreign oil imports.

The conference realignment I'd most like to see is this:
ACC Atlantic: Clemson, FSU, L'ville, Wake, Syracuse, BC, WVU
Coastal: Miami, Pittsburgh, Duke, Cincinatti, Penn State, GT, Notre Dame
SEC: East: SC, UGA, UK, Tennessee, Florida, NC State, VT
West: Bama, Auburn, aTm, Ole Miss, Miss St, Arkansas, LSU
Nebraska goes back to Big XII, and BYU, Colorado St and Wyoming join the big XII.
Iowa St, UNC and UVA join the BiG10
Boise and Nevada join the PAC

It makes since. It's all about markets. The Cincinnati TV market is huge and had $$$ written all over it for the ACC

I'm more concerned about DRad who is apparently the one who agreed to Paul Johnson's rediculous $7.5 million buyout (down form $10 million in 2012).

In fact, I'd prefer Pitt or West Virginia for that matter to Boston College who brings ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to the table other than an appealing road trip destination.

You have to put the decision in context.

[ in reply to If you look at rankings Louisville & WV were = in Academics ] |

When we passed on WVU, we were picking and choosing any Big East team we wanted. We debated and deliberated and took our time.
When Maryland bolted, there was a need for an immediate response. WVU was not an option. Louisville was. And they had fantastic basketball, football, women's basketball and baseball. We needed to make a statement and Louisville made it.

I say "No" to an 18 team conference. Please please please

no more than 16 teams. It's already way too big.
Why can't Penn State be too awful happy in their conference? * They are surrounded by similar types of institutions (huge state universities). * They play a fantastic schedule with the reorg (Michigan, Michigan State and Ohio State are all in their division...they'll play them every year). * It is the most lucrative conference in the country. * They are no longer on the outskirts of a midwestern conference with the additions of Rutgers and Maryland.
I would be absolutely shocked if Penn State left the Big Ten. If they joined the ACC, I'd put a statue of John Swofford in my yard.
WVU would be a perfect fit except for the academics. I personally don't care about that, but I'm not a university president. I'd love it, if we expanded, if the ACC negotiated with the Big 12 to release WVU along with the rights to their media. Yes, WVU has struggled, but a lot of that has to do with flying the great plains for every single game. It's ridiculous. But...

If we are still courting Notre Dame, I would expect an addition like Navy to be more attractive than West Virginia.
