Interesting post on a Notre Dame board....

“3). Rumor - ND has named its pathway to full football membership in the ACC. They will do it, starting in 2024, if Penn State joins them. You have to know PSU's history to understand this one. Three times - THREE - PSU tried to craft a deal to get into the Big East in the 1980's. On it's own terms. As in Joe Paterno's terms. Joe knew he was the biggest fish in the northeast - mid Atlantic - and he wanted a revenue share to match it. Pitt led the final vote (5-3) to keep PSU out of the Big East. But Joe did really want to be in it. After allowing Paterno a seat at the table with the Big East, the President of PSU went behind his back and struck a deal with the Big Ten. Joe had no input and knowledge of it until it was done. Joe did not want to be in the Big Ten. It put the midwestern schools in his backyard, but PSU by itself couldn't get equal access to the midwest. Can this actually happen? The current President of PSU is Eric Barron, formerly with FSU. He has no interest in athletics and no skill set in handling it. He forced the FSU Board of Trustees to sign the first GOR. I can give more evidence of his lack of leadership skills but I wills stop as he announced his retirement. Are there any real legs to this? On the PSU side..perhaps..PSU would be very interested in being in a conference with ND. But does ND really want this? Only you guys know. I am only putting context into these very interesting rumors, even if unfounded..hahaha....”

The part about access to the Midwest based on conferences

Jul 26, 2021, 10:16 PM

Seems like nonsense to me.

If the acc is going to make additions it needs to be with solid football programs.

Okie state, ucf, Cindy etc aren’t going to give us a good enough bump in SOS

Disagree. If the ACC is to make additions, it has to be to raise revenue. If the ACC TV contracts paid comparable to SEC/B1G, FSU, UM, VT, GT, etc. would have millions more to invest in their programs and I expect they would rise closer to their glory days.

That’s what I mean. Adding most of these teams we’re

Discussing doesn’t add revenue.

seem to view Notre Dame as a powerful entity that has all of the leverage.

While Notre Dame is certainly a valuable commodity, with a large fan base, this isn’t 1990. They are very likely to be left in a much worse position if they don’t join a conference for football. Quite frankly, most fans today don’t remember their last national championship over 30 years ago, and most top recruits today aren’t strongly considering Notre Dame. Being left out of a conference is likely to diminish their importance in today’s college football climate even more.

That thread just oozes arrogance….

Wow ….

That’s the ND fan base. But I posted the thread more for the possibility that PSU might be willing to jump ship as a package deal. If that happened and we got the TV contracts adjusted, that would be the best possible plan for Clemson and the ACC.

Except they still have an exclusive TV contract

Jul 28, 2021, 9:56 AM [ in reply to I read the entire thread, and was struck by how many posters there ]

And make more than most ..

I don’t see how they need a conference. They’ll make a 12 team playoff every year ..

Re: Except they still have an exclusive TV contract

Notre Dame's take is $15 million a year and it runs about 3 more years. They get a lot less from that TV contract than ACC member schools. I think the number distributed last year to ACC schools from the conference was $27 Million.

First round loss in a 12 team playoff not likely to pay off

Pitt didn't vote against PSU...it was the Catholic basketball only schools that did. Fans throughout the years have blamed the vote on Pitt, Syracuse and that is not true.

This Penn State stuff still strikes me as a fantasy, but

Jul 28, 2021, 10:25 AM

if we were able to pull that off, it would certainly be a gamechanger. And money talks...but if they wanted to be associated with the northeast and up and down the eastern coast, perhaps it would be of interest to them. They certainly would not be the "big boy" in the ACC but they would be the northern big boy, which is a better position than what they have now.

Again, cannot see it ever happening, but a conference with Clemson, Notre Dame, Penn State, Florida State, Miami and Virginia Tech can go toe-to-toe with anyone, I would say.
