floppy disk

Aug 20, 2022, 2:41 PM

Found a forgotten box of floppy disk.
I spent a couple hours looking at each, hoping to find some old photos.

In the day used these for everything as I did not trust storing things on a computer (hard drives crashed often).
They hold 1.5 MB so not enought to hold even one photo from your phone camera. In the day 1.5 MB was a lot.
Bride gave me a cutting edge Sony camera that used these, cost $1K back when that was a lot of $$.

Computer stuff improved quickly. Today's stuff will be irrelevant next month.

Cut out a notch on the other side and you can flip it over and use both sides.
You’re welcome.

My first experiences "on line" was WEBTV.
This was cheap, could read the web, but interating was blocked. It had email.
Sites sprang up to help you build a web page.
I learned HTML playing with WEBTV. My Bride built some fun sites, and made some $$ building them for local churches.

My employer gave me one of those early lap tops. We were not allowed to use it for personal (ha ha). That was cool as few knew how to use it for anything.
Giving me a computer was great!! Back then if anytime playing with it could not bring on the "blue screen of death" meant I was being lazy.

I built the first web sites including interactive for the Charlotte Police. They were afraid to go with it, but I put it online any way.

I used to carry around a box of 1.44MB floppy disks like that at Clemson to do work in the computer labs.

My first computer assigned at work was an 18.5 Dell with 2 floppy disc drives. The Program consisted of 18 floppy disk. It took forever to get anything done. But, I worked for the government so time was not an issue. These machines were replaced within 6 months with a 10 MG hard drive. Within a short time frame the hard drives were updated to 100 MB drives. Oh, the growing pains the first couple of years. Lot of bad words was said as we moved to automation in the work place.

I remember a radio bit about a floppy dix drive and hard dix drive years ago. It was either on Johnboy and Billy or Love and Hudson on 102.5 in Greenville.

keypunch cards to run our programs with.

Tell modern day kids that there used to be a Tech school curriculum for a job named "Keypunch Operator", and all you will get is blank stares.
