I predict NIL is going to ….

Jul 22, 2021, 7:19 AM

Create a lot of young entrepreneurs and expand the conservative base.

First, these guys should all create an LLC. They are going to learn about entrepreneurship and running a small business. The players from Clemson should have an advantage thanks to the Paw Journey and the new program Dabo is putting in place.

Second, they are going to learn about agents, managers, accountants, leaches, taxes, and big government.

Nothing does a better job at creating conservatives than learning about taxes, big government, and running a business.

Korey Foreman clearly chose USC over Clemson because of the NIL pitch they gave him. Wait till he has to pay roughly 40 percent to the criminals in Washington and 13.5 percent to the commies in California! Then hears Biden and the Dems squawking he doesn’t pay his fair share!

The coaching at USC understand that their jobs were only spared because of Covid. Otherwise they were probably out the door. They used NIL to get Foreman and probably most of the guys from the portal. They are trying to be the next Florida Marlins or LSU. They are desperate to have a successful year because they know they are already 1 foot out the door. But that could backfire on them. They think they have a huge advantage with NIL being in SoCal, but it won’t take these kids long to learn about that 13.5 California tax rate! Among other realities of doing business in California. There is a reason Americans have been leaving California in droves and for California losing over 20,000 businesses over the last 20 years.

Texas, Florida, and Tennessee will use no State taxes as a recruiting tactic and the big name programs (including Clemson) should have a recruiting advantage because we will be on TV more and competing for championships giving players a higher profile.

Nothing converts people to conservatism like being mugged by the realities of taxation and government extortion and fascism! Within a few years when the idiots on the far left are pushing harder for players to get paid as employees these guys will be more educated and experienced as entrepreneurs.

So those thinking NIL and recent court rulings are the slippery slope to players as employees we might see the opposite! Time will tell. It’s certainly going to be interesting!

Not only is it a sports story but a sports story that involves Clemson. Unless FM thinks that Dabo creating a center for entrepreneurship in the football facility because of NIL is just a coincidence. This is absolutely a Clemson football story! Some people just don’t like facing the reality that politics are heavily involved in athletics today and especially business and the corporate world.

Major college football programs have become big business! Sadly they have also become pawns in the political game of oppression and identity politics coming from the Democrats and the far left!

I’m a huge supporter of NIL. I have always thought athletes on scholarship should have the same rights as other students. But like Dabo, I would’ve liked to have seen it handled differently. But the incompetence of the NCAA and their stubbornness at never doing anything until they are forced to let us to where we are today.

For those that are old enough to remember a kid named Jeremy Bloom who played football at Colorado but was also a gold medal skier on the winter Olympic team understand just how ridiculous the NCAA has been about this stuff for years. As a member of the US Olympic team Bloom signed marketing contracts with apparel and ski equipment companies as well as doing a commercial for Chapstick. The NCAA stepped in and said there’s no way to know whether he was getting those endorsement deals because of the fact that he was an Olympic skier versus the fact that he played college football in Colorado. That’s how ####### stupid the NCAA is! They forest bloom to make a choice between those endorsements and still playing wide receiver at Colorado. That’s how corrupt and incompetent the NCAA is!

The Jeremy Bloom situation opened the eyes of a lot of people that had resisted athletes being able to make money like other students. That and of course the success of the college version of Madden football, but players not being paid despite being used on the cover of the game and in the game itself.

I never want to see college athletes as employees and paid a salary, because they are in fact already well compensated, especially when you consider less than 2 will ever play in the NFL. But the fact that they cannot do endorsements and not make money at all has always been anti-capitalistic and unfair.

So one sentence out of a multi paragraph post makes it politics? Nothing in there about Clemson or the NCAA or football? Just pure politics? I will resort to calling names. If that’s what you think it shows that you are a Moran! It shows how brainwashed you are and that you don’t have the ability to think critically which makes me embarrassed that you graduated from Clemson. How’s that for a clarification?

Re: The OP is about sports, not politics…

Jul 22, 2021, 8:10 AM

You’re really not very bright are you? Do you think college football today doesn’t involve politics? Do you not think a story can be about Clemson football and college football in general while also being political? So a story that has politics in it regardless of whether it affects college football and Clemson only belongs on the P and R bored?

You do realize that college football is a big business. That politicians are using college athletics as a political tool. That stories involving Clemson are involved in the business pages and political pages just as much today as the sports pages?

Dabo and assistant coaches don’t get a raise without South Carolina’s politicians approving it. Nothing happens at Clemson without political approval.

The NCAA is extremely political!

The founding of Clemson itself as a university, well a college back then, was extremely political!

Re: I predict NIL is going to ….

Jul 22, 2021, 8:00 AM [ in reply to Re: I predict NIL is going to …. ]

I think you are wrong. The conservative base is expanding. Granted, a lot of women and people that normally vote conservative became anti-Trumpers, but that had more to do with his personality and the lies and slander by the media and the Democrats. Trump got more votes in the 2020 election than anyone that has ever run for president with the exception of Joe Biden. And Biden only got more votes when the mail in ballots were counted and we know for a fact there’s a lot of funny business involving that and all the states that illegally changed their voting laws with Covid as an excuse.

The reason the Democrats are pushing so hard for illegal immigration is because they are losing black voters and Hispanic voters and have already lost most of the blue-collar union voter base in the Midwest. Those people are largely voting Republican now. The only hope the Democrats have expanding their voter base is with illegal immigration. The Democrats are getting desperate, which is why they’re behaving like raving lunatic‘s! They see their power and control slipping out of their hands.

No. Populism has brought a lot of people to the conservative movement. The Republicans are gonna dunk all over the Democrats in the 2022 midterm elections and polls are already showing that nearly 50 percent of Democrats would not vote for Kamala Harris in the next presidential election. And she very well could be the sitting president at the time because every day it’s more apparent how totally Looney Tunes and demented Joe Biden is.

If people could vote today based on everything we have seen since the election, Trump would win in a landslide! Millions of people are regretting they ever voted for that idiot.

I think we could see a kid make enough money via NIL, along with getting bitten by the entrepreneurship bug, that they skip going to the NFL. I think that could happen. It’s going to be very interesting to see what happens and how this evolves over the next 3 to 5 years. There are definitely going to be some mistakes and a lot of growing pains while schools and kids figure this out.

Actually Korey and DJU will both have to pay income taxes to California, because that is their home residence and that would not have changed if he had come to Clemson.

Re: I predict NIL is going to ….

Jul 22, 2021, 11:12 AM

Actually, we don’t know for a fact that DJ might have changed his resident status. But there’s a very good chance he won’t pay income taxes in California because he didn’t earn that money in California. Let me explain further.

In the NFL if you play for a pro team in Texas or Tennessee or Florida your entire salary is not free of state taxes. The way salary works in the NFL is they get paid 16 equal payments. They get the signing bonus upfront and then the rest of their salary is paid each season in 16 installments for the 16 regular season games. Half of those games are home games. So that money will be free of state taxes in a state that has no state taxes. then any games they play on the road in Texas or Tennessee or Florida etc. that money will be tax free also. But if you travel to California to play the Chargers or say San Francisco then that 1/16 of their salary will be subject to California state taxes because you played that game in California meaning you earned that money in California and California is going to tax you.

States used to not do this but California was among the first to realize how much money they were losing out on with players coming into California and they started taxing those players because you are taxed where you earn the money. California taxes all professional athletes that play games in the state of California. Even if they live in other states and play in teams that are not in California. Because they actually earned that money playing that game in the state of California.

I’m from the lowcountry but I lived in Florida for five years. Money I made in my mortgage business and in real estate back in South Carolina the state of South Carolina taxed. . Because that money was earned in South Carolina.

So I’m not sure how DJs situation will play out. But if he is smart, and he is a smart guy, he would set up an LLC and operate under that LLC as a resident of South Carolina and that would be a domestic corporation in the state of South Carolina.

I’m sure the athletic program already has tax advisers schooling these guys on Waze to preserve as much of their income as possible. If you go to the IRS website and on most IRS documents they have the phrase …… “ it is legal to avoid, but illegal to invade”. …… i’m sure we have people helping them avoid as much taxes as possible!

There is some truth in your words. A friend of a friend who
was big liberal tax the rich guy won the SC lottery for 100K several years ago
and took lump sum. Was not pleased when he got around 60k after taxes.
He never said much about taxes after that.

Don't count on it. Hollywood is full of wealthy morons who gladly fork over more than half of what they earn to their government masters. As long as there are high taxes, illegals everywhere, out of control crime and communist Chinese propaganda being fed to them 24/7 they are as happy as a pig in slop. Doesn't make any sense, I agree, but it certainly doesn't surprise me any more.

Re: I predict NIL is going to ….

Jul 22, 2021, 10:38 AM

The ironic thing about Hollywood is if those people actually practice what they preach in California wouldn’t be in nearly as big trouble as it is. It’s classic do as I say not as I do. Hollywood celebrities are like these tax CEOs and rich Democrats that don’t like guns and don’t like walls but they all send their kids to private schools that have privacy fences and para military security squads and they all live in a gated communities and I’ll have private security which carry guns.

Not only that, they make very few movies and TV shows in California. They love making movies in the south because there are no unions and lower taxes. Places like Vancouver and Canada are called Hollywood north. Because the regulations and the unions and the pay scale is completely different plus the exchange rate. They avoid making movies in Hollywood like the plague! Because they don’t want to deal with the taxes and the union rules and regulations and the other government regulations from the state of California. But yet they turn around and vote for that ####!

Like Matthew McConaughey told Joe Rogan when he moved to Austin. Remember why you left California and don’t vote the same way here!

Because children always follow the rules and bow down to authority and do as they’re told.

And I noticed you didn’t answer my question.

My parents taught me to be a critical thinker. My parents taught me to make my own decisions in life. My parents taught me to be an independent thinker and to respect my elders but we cautious of authority.

The only real rule I had as a child was to not lie. I was raised to be a skeptic and a contrarian and I am eternally grateful for that gift! And the gift and the love of reading that they gave me at an early age and to be intellectually curious.

I have always been outspoken, a skeptic, a leader, a contrarian. I have never been a follower or a sucker!

And my parents taught me to never make emotional decisions. Never make a decision while I’m upset or angry. To sleep on everything and to not rush into things. Again, be a leader not a follower!

former Tigers that are playing pro ball today? That would be your sample to bolster your argument, and really the only sample worth considering, as they are all getting paid large salaries and pretty much have all gone through the experience of learning about "agents, managers, accountants, leaches, taxes, and big government," in addition to other aspects of life and business. Exactly the people you are describing benefitting from NIL. They are also almost all degreed college graduates to boot. Are they getting, what was it, "mugged by the realities of taxation and government extortion and fascism" and gone all MAGA? Or are they more likely to support a different approach to politics and life?
