The case for letting Watkins play against Auburn (long)

May 9, 2012, 8:49 PM

I've noticed a general sentiment around here (especially prominent among those with 50 posts or less and the usual suspected coots) that Watkins should sit out against Auburn. I haven't been very vocal on this issue, but I feel it's time to make the case for Watkins to play against Auburn.

If we want to compete for a National Championship, Watkins should play in every meaningful game. If we hold him out and lose in part because of his absence, it would make the road to the national championship basically impossible. It would be impossible not just because a one-loss ACC champion could easily get passed by, say, an undefeated Southern Cal, an undefeated LSU/Bama, and a pair of one-loss SEC or Big 10 teams to be named later. Further, it would be virtually impossible because of the psychological impact of losing the first game of the season on a national stage. The potential punishment would be too severe for the rest of the players--players who together constitute a very promising Tiger team that will likely repeat as ACC Champs if we can take down FSU in Tally.

I'm sick of all this we're better than that crap. When you're clawing your way to the top, your best, irreplaceable guys play in the big games even if you have to bite your tongue and get off your moral high horse. It's about wins and losses at the end of the day, and Auburn is a loss we cannot afford. Get real. Only those who are content with mediocrity or are so flush with the fruits of championships and top-5 recruiting classes would realistically sit their best player for the entire game.

If Watkins needs to be suspended despite meeting certain behavioral conditions and turning things around, suspend him for Ball State. He will still miss out on a Saturday in Death Valley, which is punishment enough. He was brought here as a big-time playmaker to light up the reels in primetime. Let him play.

if we lose the game for lack of Sammy then that's the way of life. Let them learn, let the grow up, let them become men in understand that their actions have repercussions to them and those around them.

As far as I'm concerned Sammy already apologized to we fans. I forgive him but I'm ready to bear the loss for the sake of Clemson's integrity. I mean ###, the kids on this team are more important to me than wins and losses. Let's not lose sight of what is important here.

You are right.
Integrity counts more than winning a football game.
People only learn it from the proper messages.

times. If Dabo doesn't suspend Sammy for a game, and Sammy ends up in trouble a second time, there's no way Dabo doesn't come down harshly.

I don't think Watkins should sit out any games. I do think he made a very poor decision, (and he should be held accountable) but potentially punishing the rest of the team and an entire fan base for one 19 year old's lack of judgement doesn't make a lot of sense to me...

I would prefer that they find a way to individually make sure Sammy understands that substance abuse is not acceptable behavior, (especially for a division 1 athlete on a team that expects to compete at the highest level) without potentially hurting the rest of the team.

It doesn't have anything to do with the number of posts. It has to do with accountability. Usuc has none. Period. Winning at all cost is total crap. I have faith that the rest of the team will step up and beat auburn. This will only make Sammy a better man and the team a team go tigers

INTEGRITY and CHARACTER

May 9, 2012, 10:17 PM

I'm not on a "moral high-horse" and I'm not content with mediocrity, but I value integrity and a part of what Dabo promotes is developing football players off of the field in terms of character. If he doesn't suspend him for the Auburn game, then he loses all credibility.
Great teams can overcome adversity due to injuries, bad calls during a game, suspensions, etc.
The big picture is doing what is right for Sammy and for the program as a whole.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't know what the punishment should be...but to say

May 9, 2012, 11:00 PM

that Sammy not being suspended for the Auburn game will cause Dabo to "lose all credibility" is blatantly untrue. Maybe you see it that way, along with some others. But to make that statement as if it applies to everyone's point of view is completely false.

If Dabo suspends Sammy then I support it. If Dabo doesn't suspend him then I support that too because I have enough confidence that Dabo knows how to handle this situation better than me and you.

Perhaps you are one of the coaches and are involved in the situation on a day to day basis, but I doubt it. So, speak for yourself, but not for me and many other Clemson/Sammy fans who disagree with you wholeheartedly.

You're living in fantasy land. Everyone but Dabo pumpers

May 11, 2012, 12:42 AM

will lose respect and call BS on everything Dabo has ever said about discipline and doing what's right if Sammy isn't suspended for the Auburn game. There is only one person people should be mad at and disappointed in and that's Sammy.

"If he doesn't suspend him for the Auburn game, then he loses all credibility."

With who you?
So many want to put their horse in this race, knowing that their horse can't run.
Dabo will be firm and fair with Sammy, what ever he may or may not do when he decide to do or not do, Dabo is not out to please or take the advise of any one on t-net or the media.
Not saying he will but Dabo could do nothing more other than what has alreday been done.
Guess what no one on here knows what has been said or done between Dabo & Sammy
Dabo said and it was posted that Sammy has done every thing that he has been asked to do, Dabo also said
"I will do what I think needs to be done, When I think it needs to be done"

Put your horses back in the barn, they are not qualifed
to run in this race

I personally don't think he should miss any games

May 9, 2012, 10:22 PM

The punishment needs to be immediate so he should miss summer and some fall football related activities. By then if he hasn't learned his lesson then he should miss games.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I personally don't think he should miss any games

May 9, 2012, 10:31 PM

I could see them requiring him to attend substance abuse meetings, but I think suspending him from a game only hurts the team. He can't undo his mistake. The best he can do now is learn from it... (and learning is the primary reason most of us attend school the last time I checked)

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I personally don't think he should miss any games

May 9, 2012, 10:36 PM

maybe his punishment should be writing a paper on why one shouldn't smoke marijuana. Come on. He broke the law and his mistake must have real weight. He will be forgiven by his coaches, teammates and fans, but it will be an invaluable lesson for him.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: The case for letting Watkins play against Auburn (long)

May 10, 2012, 4:38 AM

My case for sitting Sammy against Auburn.
Sitting him for Ball State,or Furman does nothing. It sends no message.
And you definitly do not want to sit him for any conference games because Clemson won't compete for a NC the way Bama did last year if they don't win the conference.
Besides,Clemson can't worry about a NC when they can't beat a N.C. State ,on the road(last year),or struggle against teams like Wake on a Thursday night (this year).
Dabo has more important issues than the NC when it comes to Sammy.Dabo has to send a message to Sammy ,and the team that this type of behavior will not be tolerated.
All this talk about being better, biting your tongue, getting off your moral high horse is crap.
You can either suspend him for a high profile game like Auburn ,or you can pull a Spurrier and suspend you star player 4 or 5 times during his career because you failed to send that message.
He should sit the Auburn game.

Most coaches suspend 2 to 4 games for a dui. Not sure what it is for weed and/or pills. Maybe alot less. Regardless of first offense or not. If not, the media crushes them. Especially for a star player.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: The case for letting Watkins play against Auburn (long)

May 10, 2012, 8:52 PM

That is not a case. Sammy is more than forgiven by me. We've all done things at least that bad. BUT, winning a football game is not more important than integrity. The next game is Auburn. He should not play. After that, it is Dabo's call.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Dabo and staff are going to take the course that's best for

May 10, 2012, 9:29 PM

Sammy and the team both, not the rest of us.

There's a lot facing Sammy at this point in time, legally, scholastically, and athletically. I would imagine that there wouldn't be any practice or workout restrictions for him, as it's best to keep him surrounded by a network of people that will help keep him straight and focused while he continues to deal with the fallout.

I would think that how he responds to the above issues between now and the season will factor in heavily in regards to game and season punishment.

Dabo or the University doesn't have to hand down or announce any type of punishment in order to satisfy our insatiable appetite for resolution, or even simply to make some kind of statement, before the timing of such presents itself.

If Sammy responds appropriately to what's coming his way, punishment will be less. If he doesn't, it will be more. Only time will tell, and these statements on whether he should or shouldn't miss any game time being made now are inconsequential - they don't matter, and shouldn't. There's a long time between now and then, and opportunities for this situation to go either way.

I believe we'll be stronger as a team regardless of how it plays out. Adversity lays the groundwork for real growth. 70 points to WVA. 3 straight to the infidels. The Sammy incident. We're ripe for improvement.

If we get beat by Aubbie because Sammy didnt play

May 10, 2012, 9:57 PM

Then we arent gonna win no national title...this I promise you. Now if he was QB I might agree but there is no way not playing a wr is gonna cost us a game unless we are really that sucky at that position. Yes it would hurt us but we have other playmakers at that position. He did the crime he must do the time.

Really? Watkins won't miss a practice or a game. Just check out history.

Not to worry.
