I need explanations on TV Markets...

May 20, 2012, 6:05 PM

My question is related to the SEC/BIG 12 thing. I understand in principle the 2 are working together, but I'm not sure I get the TV Market theory.

Let's say you have 3 games occurring on a given Saturday.

#5 Clemson vs #2 Alabama
#20 Miami vs Boston College
#10 Texas vs NC State

The SEC just expanded to 16 teams with FSU and Clemson. It's been all over ESPN and ESPN touts the SEC as the DEFINITION of southern football. All highlights are SEC driven. Talks of having 3 of the top 4 teams as SEC teams in the new playoffs are rumbling.

Why would the SEC be better off to take a team like NCSt just because they're in North Carolina when you would instantly be branded as the greatest conference in football by all major news outlets? That perception would make it virtually impossible for a top recruit in the state of Florida or North Carolina or Georgia or Virginia (if SEC got VT instead of Clemson) to not choose the SEC school after hearing all of the hype.

This causes a cyclical effect. I just feel that bigger potential matchups are more important than a TV market. I think the ACC and Big East are proof of that. It's about creating the most viewers possible, and you do that by having the best football possible.

Comparing northern fanbases with southern fanbases is a mistake. Southerners are more into college football.

Creating a conference network places adding to your footprint a must. Conference networks are the future. And with migration to the south, creating a conference network will be even more valuable in the furure. That's why you hear nothing about Houston and Tulsa being added to the Big 12. And they have been pretty good in recent years, certanly better than Louisville, post-Petrino, who you hear linked to the Big 12.

Forget markets, it's all about states. And the reason for that is that eventually the SEC will form its own network. When the Big10 started their network they were able to charge 70 cents to each cable and satellite subscriber in states where there were Big10 teams. They got 10 cents per subscriber in states where there weren't Big10 teams.
That's your answer and it really is as simple as that. Markets don't matter, states do

Interesting. That makes sense. Seems like the ACC with all

the states that it has could make a killing with a network due to basketball. Seems like teams like Syracuse, Pitt, MD, UNC, Duke could bring in a ton of money with basketball.
