I need a little tech help please

Oct 19, 2021, 9:26 AM

Good morning Tnet!

I have just moved into a house that is slightly larger than my previous house and I need to get a new router so I can have wifi in my entire home.

I have decided to go with a mesh system because of a funky layout in the 2 story house.

Can anybody provide me with some good suggestions for a particular brand or a specific mesh router system that they would recommend?

I am going to have Comcast/Xfinity internet. Leaning toward their 800 mbps plan but not completely decided on that yet. Could go down to the 400 plan or up to the 1Gig plan depending on how things are running in the house. For that reason I would like something that will be compatible with the 1 Gig plan just in case.

I will also be buying a modem. I'm currently leaning toward the Motorola MB8611 but would accept any advice in that area as well.

Any advice is helpful unless it's not. Thank you!

For the mesh wi-fi, I can highly recommend eero. Size of coverage and composition of wall and floor material will determine how many units you need. I used 3 for a 4,000 sq ft house and now use one for a 1,000 sq ft apartment.

What speed internet do you run with the eero?

I tried to read a little on different brands of routers before coming here and most reviews said the eero struggles to produce anything close to its stated Mbps.

I have eeros at my house and it pulls 923/410 consistently. You have to use the set up process to make sure everything is connected on channel 157, if they are to far apart they’ll connect on channel 1 which isn’t going to give you the speeds you are paying for. You can download a wifi anaylzer to help with the placement of the pods which will help with a consistent connection

Any recommendations or a direction for me to go in terms of brand reliability?

A suggestion of a brand to stay away from would be helpful as well.

Either way I have to buy new equipment. So I'm looking for a point in the right direction.

My previous router would not cover my single story 1800 sq ft house.

Unless I want cords running across my upstairs the main router will have to be in a corner of the house upstairs and kids' playroom/movie room will be downstairs on opposite side of the house.

My decision to go mesh was to eliminate the possibility of buying a single router and having it not work and having to purchase something else to fix the problem.

every router now a days can be tied to an extender...

Oct 19, 2021, 11:57 AM

mesh is just a fancy term to justify spending 100's of dollars for pretty extenders that come in 1 package.

Go to wlmart or best buy..get a wifi 6 router with at least 4 antennas.. . put it in the center of your 2nd story.. then see where you need extenders. IF it dosent work.. return it and spend your $400 on a mesh system.

I used linksys and asus routes for years but the last 2 flaked on me .. their quality has gone down.
Im using a TDlink now and have no problems.

All I did was point out that a mesh is different than your preferred solution. The OP should know that before jumping in, IMO.

Im not sure why that brings out the dbag in you.

I’m a fiber tech, and in my experience the best mesh systems out there are eerie, or orbi. STAY AWAY FROM GOOGLE HOME, it’s absolutely the worst one I’ve seen. It works for some people but I’ve seen way more problems with it then anything else.

Re: I need a little tech help please

I've looked into the Orbi a little bit.

Would there be any benefit to getting a netgear modem if I go Orbi or would the Motorola modem (cheaper) do just as well?

Do you recommend a specific Orbi? The 852 and up are a little out of my price range, but in terms of the RBK752 and down do you have a preference?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I need a little tech help please

Oct 19, 2021, 10:41 AM

Haven’t seen a bad orbi system at all so just get the one in your price range, and if your on coax I would get a Motorola surfboard 3.1 docsis modem they are great modems and not to expensive either. But if your going to do a mesh do not get a modem/router combo get a stand alone modem

I purchased it when my wife and I moved to a new/bigger house. Bought it at Sam's for about $300 and installed it myself.

It came with four satellites and has definitely resulted in more reliable WiFi coverage and connections in every room.

Just remember to look at the speed of each channel on the

router system you go with. Make sure to get what you really want to see on each wireless device. Might help you decide on internet speed. Number of channels, speed of each channel, and number of devices you plan to regularly use are important parts of the equation.

Yes I am searching for routers that will carry at least 1 Gig with the 5 ghz channels.

As my kids get older I'm sure the need for speed will only increase for our wifi.

I'm hoping to choose a product that will still be doing a quality job in a handful of years or more.

wired to the modem (fiber all the way to the back of the modem). Router is older, and only get 300 out each channel. Don't have any trouble with that speed streaming TV while using two laptops.

I have the ASUS Zen Wi-Fi mini mesh router and it’s great. Whatever you get I would highly recommend a Wi-Fi 6 system; it really did make a big difference for me to upgrade from AC to AX. My max speed from the ISP is 400Mbps and I can still get greater than 300Mbps in my office, which is as far away from my modem/router as could possibly be in my house.

I have seen some good reviews on the Asus products as well.

Was it hard to get the satellite set up and running correctly?

I've seen people talking about the many customizations you can make with Asus equipment and thought it might be over my head. I'm at the "plug it in and hope it works" level of this kind of thing. Having to troubleshoot issues with the mesh is most likely beyond me.

Thank you for the info!

Re: I need a little tech help please

Oct 19, 2021, 11:46 AM

No it was pretty much plug and play for me. All three of the nodes are exactly the same you just specify which one is plugged into the modem and the rest automatically become satellites. ASUS give their users access to change page after page of settings if you want, which can be intimidating, but if you don’t have an inclination to do that you can just leave everything set to default.
