UVa lose last night proves overall, ACC is overrated

More often than not when UVA plays a good team outside the ACC, they get beat. Granted, one year they did win the whole thing, but even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in a while.

Their boring offense is about is exciting as ours, and it’s very self limiting.

Nevertheless there is a lot of teams out there who would like to have their successes, including Clemson!

No doubt. They have had some very solid years.

Anything. The only thing it proved was that Furman played better than UVA last night. If the loss reinforces anything with me it’s how sheety ACC refs are. I posted after our loss in the ACC tournament about how their guards are consistently allowed to get away with holding and hand checking on the perimeter because, they’re Virginia and the conference refs buy into the narrative that they’re just a gritty physical defensive team. If you look at the wide disparity in foul calls in league games with UVA you’ll se evidence of this. Last night it was 17 - 13 in UVA’s favor for personal fouls; so no great advantage. The hoos make a lot of hay in the regular season under the protection of ACC officials, but almost always do nothing in the tournament when they actually have to follow the rules that other teams have to follow.

always someone else's fault!! not really!!!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

They’re 2nd in the conference in foul differential behind

Mar 17, 2023, 9:35 AM

Only Syracuse. They run a physical pack line defense and set 3 moving screens per offensive possession, while ‘cuse runs a zone defense that minimizes fouls. UVA should be last in the league in foul differential.

I tend to question how often UVA gets away with setting extremely late/moving picks every game. I didn't get to watch yesterday's game to see if maybe the refs weren't allowing that yesterday.

Seriously.

If they dont miss FT, they win

If their veteran PG passes to the open man, rather than throw the ball up for a turnover and 3, they win.

But that fluke play caused them to lose.....But UVA apparently sucks because of it.

So everytime a team is upset it means their conference is overrated?

Guess Pac12 is also overrated...

Not thinking we were over rated this year. From every metric I have seen we were not even a top 4 conference.

Yeah but nothing is as overrated as Big10 basketball....except for maybe Big10 football.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Clemson doesn't care about basketball....as evidenced by Brown-L getting 14 years.

I’m no basketball expert but they seem to have issues with scoring and when that’s the case you can get bit in a tournament by a team on a hot streak. That being said, he’s a heck of a coach and any team would take him in a heart beat.

To me it looks like they had the ACC ratings about right.

It doesn’t prove anything about the strength or weakness of the ACC.

1

Mar 17, 2023, 9:56 AM

Just as Arizona losing doesn’t prove weakness of the PAC-12, Illinois and Iowa losing doesn’t prove weakness of the Big 10, and West Virginia losing doesn’t prove weakness of the Big XII.

People try to draw too many conclusions from one or two games. This is basketball, not football.

The ACC is a shell of it's former self

Mar 17, 2023, 10:04 AM

you know that, everyone knows that. Only 5 teams in the tourney. Only two seeds at 4. League rated 7th in the country. Regular season champ knocked off by the SoCon champ. Former powerhouses NC and FSU don't even make the tourney.

There is not one objective measure that says the ACC is anything but mediocre right now

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You're missing the point.

1

Mar 17, 2023, 10:12 AM

The point is that Virginia losing doesn't "prove" anything about the ACC. It was one game.

Plus, last time I checked, Virginia doesn't represent the other 14 teams in the conference. They only represent themselves, and they were outplayed yesterday - but that doesn't say anything about the strength of the ACC.

When you are talking SOS you most definitely consider the other teams strength when looking at the overall resume of getting an invite. If the ACC had been stronger we would have gotten in with no issue. The ACC being outside the top 4 hurt our resume.

And it’s not even close if you have followed the ACC over the past 20 plus years. It is really an embarrassment seeing that was the one sport we could hang our hat on. North Carolina did not even make the tourney. Let that sink in. Those worried about the nonsense of comparing a finish to where they were projected remember what the so called experts predicted as they were the pre season #1.

What is proves is that on any given night, any team can lose. Ask Clemson, UVA, Arizona, Rutgers, and other seeded NCAA and NIT teams. There will be more to add to the list today.

That’s always been the case with basketball but let’s not say the ACC is currently a top tier conference. Used to be #1 or 2 consistently. Not any longer. The SEC has even passed us in basketball. Never would have thought that would have happened.

.....of historic proportions this season. Anyone with an ounce of perspective understood that before UVA's loss.

Getting 3 teams in the NCAA does mean your conference really sucks. It's like the stamp of "suckyness" for Power-5.

Clemson isn't half the basketball program UVA is either, so I guess we can all rest easy now.
