I have an old bird page I don't keep up, Tmail if you want it.
Today ran across a really good one here:

More birds are in the UpState area than most places. I have IDed over 120 just from my porch chair. It is a good hobby for us fat lazy folks.

We love watching "our" birds every morning as we enjoy our coffee. One of the true blessings of retired life is sitting in your chair and seeing cardinals and finches eating and bluebirds all around their house. Thanks for the list.

Backyard bird watching in Summer is much less than other seasons, but still exciting.
Our feeder foods are not as tasty as what Mother Nature has about.
Mostly today (and lately) in the yard have Titmice, Chickadee, BlueBirds, Wrens, Cardinals, Doves, Finches, and Woodpeckers.
I do have this Pine Warbler today. That may be my favorite Winter bird, seldom see one in Summer.

Or at least that's what I believe it is; very similar to a Sparrow but with a little yellow tint around the wings. We have several pair of Cardinals and quite a few Bluebirds as well.

Don't know where you live, but it is too early for them in the UpState.
It is a great bird, but I surely hope they don't show up here this year.
Unlike most migrants who return each year to the same area, migration by this bird is highly variable (known as irruptive).

I do not Hunt per say anymore; but, I still visit my deer stand on the farm many times during the season for the sole purpose of "lstening to the woods wake up." It's a great feeling to see the sun peek up over the horizon and the woods come alive with sounds. Nature is an amazing thing. More people should get out and enjoy the outdoors. Go Tigers

spend Friday nights in the upstate? If you do, I can put you in a stand before dawn if we have a late gametime - 3:30 pr a night game. Plenty of time to hunt most of the morning and still get to the game on time.

Love bird watching. My favorite is the Blue Grosbeak. Haven't seen one yet this year though. But the multiple hummingbirds keep me entertained.

Good bird. For many reasons the Blue Bird is a fav of many who like blue in a bird, but the Blue Grosbeak pales them.

I like the song of the blue bird. It's very distinctive and unique. They're very territorial which I found surprising until I put a cedar blue bird box on my house and caught a few fighting over it. They really go at it. But the Grosbeak is stunning. It favors a cardinal but instead of red it's a pretty blue.

Most birds are due to competing for food. Flock birds are different, but most birds are territorial.
On my dock BBs will produce 3 broods a year. An interesting thing is that the new BBs will help feed the next batch. I don't know if any other species do that.

There's a different looking bird that has been staying outside my bedroom window at our place in Sturgis. Doesn't seem to want to leave. The guy's I'm with say taking a shower might make him leave. Whut???

That is one of the hardest working critters around. Too bad they don't get the credit they deserve. It is a beautiful bird, and one of the few that earns his keep.
I enjoy your updates. I have never made that rally may be too old to get there now except in my Jeep.

We ran across an eagles nest on Hartwell a few weeks ago. Saw a juvenile eagle hanging out in it…really cool.
I’m not sure what type yet but there’s several bald eagles around.

Wish I could have been there. They will use the same nest each year so check back.
Often folks "think" they saw an Eagle (most times a Hawk or Osprey). An adult Eagle flying over chills one to the bone. It takes 4 years to get the white head. The Tugaloo has many.
We can thank CLEMSON for that. Not long back Eagles were dying. Students looked into it. Coots were eating poison algae, and Eagles were eating them. The algae was cleaned up and Eagles again soar over Hartwell.

Most don't know, but the tiny Chickadee is a leader. In Winter other species will follow him around. The mixed "flock" will make a circle over their territory, and hit your place often if it is in the circle.
Finches eat most of the feeder food. Attract Finches and all birds in the area will follow. Feed the Finches if you want to attract birds.

Blue Jays are spectacular.
They keep high in the trees. When food is less, they will come to feeders. Mine will mimic a hawk to clear the feeders.

Don’t care for the blue jays since they will eat other bird’s eggs and even their hatchlings. A couple of years ago, a robin nested on a limb outside my kitchen window and the jays got her babies the first day they hatched

he must have been swooping down for his prey because he did not see my SUV barreling down Indian River Drive. Fortunately, the lucky bugger barely missed my windshield and went over the car. It definitely was not a Snowy Owl, they are extremely rare in Florida. I am guessing a Burrowing Owl, but I am not an expert.
We also see Osprey and Bald Eagles on a regular basis, Osprey can be spotted here on a daily basis fishing the rivers. Bald eagles can be seen a few times a year if you keep your eyes peeled.
Birds of prey are my favorite kind, except turkey vultures, I see about 4-50 of those a day if I choose to go outdoors. They do an excellent job of keeping Florida's highways clean,. we have no need for county animal collection services.

Turkey Vultures are not birds of prey.
Owls are fun. I would say the most feared bird of prey in this area is the 'Great Horned Owl' which can easily carry off your cat.
My yard is a place the smaller Screech Owls hang. They are amazing hunters, will grab up a mouse I did not notice.

Pair of Barred Owls in my backyard. Looking for weeks at a storm damaged tree as a possible nesting site. Must have found another. Haven’t seen in weeks. Still hear them early, just before sunrise. Beautiful birds.
Watching three falcons ripping through the sky around my house lately.

confuse when it landed in the tree above me when I was sitting with my turkey call and would make low chirping sounds. It would look for an easy meal and couldn’t find anything- every time it would look away, I made another sound and it would look again

Those are certainly the loudest.
I see them often. Pine beetles took down about 20 of my ancient Pine Trees. Those guys love those beetles.

We have a pair of green herons that return to our pond every year, them and the Kingfishers are my favorite.
We have quite a few ospreys and bald eagles that visit as well. A couple of years ago I added twenty juvenile grass carp to the pond to help control the algae. A couple of months later while I was mowing, a bald eagle swiped one of those grass carp from the surface and flew directly over my head with it in it’s talons. I hollered at the eagle and told him that fish cost me $15.

Just now learned something about Hummingbirds.

We just had a pretty hard, steady rain, and some thunder and lightning here that lasted for nearly 30 minutes. All birds disappeared from sight, not near the feeders. Except the Hummingbirds, which continued to stream to their feeder like nothing was different.

Hummingbirds not hitting the feeder this year. Wife hung 2 hanging baskets that they are loving. Only seen like 1 or 2 even go to the feeder. If the plants are bringing them in then it’s all good just easier to see at the feeder.

Wife planted several salvia plants around on the back deck, near the hummingbird feeder, and they absolutely love the stuff. They hit the plants about as often as the sugar water.

There are different cultivars -- look for those labeled "hardy". Most sold are annuals unless you live in a warm zone.

in his backyard - not always as labeled- Bought what was marked as a green bell pepper this Spring and got peppers that could be described as either black or dark purple. My lantana have come back each year for at least 4 years and have bloomed well until this year - one yellow and one with multi-colored, orange, red & yellow or gold mixed in.

Have no idea why folks here call the lame ##### "Coots".
Unlike some poor chicken with spurs attached to his legs to appeal to some a ssholes debased interests as they fight, real Coots are a very nice/interesting critter.

We call them Blue Petes or Pungo Chickens, taste pretty good but you have to skin them.
