I like Judge Keller

Jan 20, 2022, 9:08 AM

Don't know him, but the guy sticks to his guns, is consistent, believes in what he says, and, as far as I've seen, doesn't personally attack anyone. He seems like a solid guy.

I agree with him that the biggest problem is the way the AD seems to look at the basketball program and that that's a huge part of the problem, but I disagree with him that Brownell should stay. The AD needs to take basketball more seriously and they need to start by committing to a new coach who is not content with mediocrity - whose ultimate goal is to WIN championships, and not just make it to a tournament.

He loves Clemson. I love Clemson. That's really all I need to know. Same as the rest of y'all. If we disagree beyond that, then no big deal. It's really sad and pathetic how petty and juvenile some people get just because they disagree with someone.

When your biggest love is Brad above everything else then you don't love Clemson. It's petty and juvenile to mock our fans....remember the times he used the "luv muh Clemson football" line when mocking those that disagree. If I recall correctly he even misspelled Clemson on purpose when using that line. A solid guy as you put it doesn't post under other handles while on a self imposed hiatus.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Clemson doesn't care about basketball....as evidenced by Brown-L getting 14 years.

Re: I like Judge Keller

Jan 20, 2022, 9:40 AM

I, too, don't agree with much of what he has to say about Brownell but he is castigated on here in an unmerciful way. He simply defends his belief. Reminds me of the politics in this country. If you disagree with me, I will ridicule you in public. Yeah, I like Judge Keller but I think its time to look in another direction for a basketball coach.

Jan 21, 2022, 1:36 PM

The guy was just telling a different version of the story.

My version is that JK turned to trying to poke holes in football in order to keep trying to shore up basketball.

It's stupid.

Poke holes in football & I guess soccer - why not - except nobody keeps up with it a ton - to make our poorly performing basketball team seem better ?

No feelings hurt at all - just a stupid exercise on his part.

I think all Clemson fans need to have realistic expectations

Jan 20, 2022, 9:39 AM

regarding our Clemson Basketball program.

I also think for Clemson BBall to have any sort of success it needs a "gimmick" to somewhat level the playing field. We will never recruit on a consistent basis with the general ACC competition. Purnell brought an up tempo style, with full court press mentality and a shooter or two. Other than that it was with a bunch of extremely good athletes, not necessarily the best bball players.

To "expect championships" in basketball at Clemson is setting yourself up for massive disappointment. We make fun of South Carolina all the time for that same mentality in football..........they had the best coach in school history and one of the best coaches in college football for 10-ish years and came away with ZERO championships (unless you consider an SECeast division winner a championship).

Point being, when analyzing the Clemson basketball ceiling you have to be realistic with:
-recruiting disadvantages
-support, we'll ALWAYS be football first
-history
-etc....

I'm not advocating for Brownell to stay or go. Honestly I don't really care and haven't since Purnell left. If I had to say it's probably time to part ways w/ BB, but I also have a realistic expectation of who we are as a basketball program and don't have delusions of hanging all these championship banners from our rafters in littlejohn.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'm sorry but I don't buy into that defeatist mentality...

Jan 20, 2022, 9:43 AM

There is absolutely no reason Clemson men's basketball cannot be a consistent top 25 program.

Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.

that's great....we've been to the tourney 13 times in 42 yrs

Jan 20, 2022, 9:55 AM

making the tourney every 2-3 years is a fair expectation, but if you're expecting ACC and/or tourney championships then the disappointment will continue.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: that's great....we've been to the tourney 13 times in 42 yrs

Jan 20, 2022, 10:13 AM

I disagree. The ACC has never been more competitive. Duke and UNC aren’t what they used to be. Georgia Tech won the tournament last year. No reason we can’t compete.

2024 purple level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

so what are your "expectations" for Clemson basketball?

Jan 20, 2022, 10:38 AM

tourney every year?
ACC Championship every 2-3 years?

What's "baseline" for you?

Jan 20, 2022, 10:18 AM [ in reply to I'm sorry but I don't buy into that defeatist mentality... ]

Absolutely agree.
The advantage now is that the PAW is now universally recognized and the football success brings an awareness that was not there before. It may not get players begging to come - but it will get you in to see mom and dad.
12 years of hoping we “beat expectations” of finishing above media’s low expectations is not a win.

Re: I like Judge Keller

Jan 20, 2022, 9:58 AM

The Judge is a great Clemson fan. He only questions the football program out of defense of the basketball program. He gives objective facts and although I do not agree with everything he says, he has his opinion and there is no question in my mind he wants nothing but success in everything Clemson. He is just making an argument for more support for basketball.

Why can't we be successful in both, right?

We do not need to attack Judge... there are plenty of trolls on this site to weed out. We need more Judges, not less.

Re: I like Judge Keller

Jan 20, 2022, 10:11 AM

Are you sure Judge thinks Brownell should stay? I’d like to hear it from the Judge himself how he would justify such an opinion.

The order of operations is important here. First, get a coach that can develop a level of basketball that excites the fan base. We don’t have to pay in excess to have this, IMHO. Then pay to retain for success, whatever it takes. This is the way it works in the business world. If you hire a senior guy with a lot of experience who can come in and hit the ground running and make an immediate impact, then sure, pay them a lot up front. I just don’t see us going that route.

Judge has one opinion… I’d venture to guess that a great many very intelligent fans have differing opinions.

Re: Do you count our trip to the CFP? Or have we missed the

Jan 21, 2022, 3:46 PM

I don't count a basketball season that short. A 10 wins season is a novelty. That's neither here nor there though. Either way, we went once in the last 10 full seasons with CBB. That's awful. I think CBB has only gone once with his players for a full season since showing up at Clemson. Like I said we won't go this year either. Next year is unlikely as well. Those are the facts. I like CBB and have been a supporter. I have liked a lot of athletes and coaches. That doesn't mean they are doing a good job. CBB isn't if the tournament is the goal. He just isn't. Wish it were the opposite. I think a change is in order. If we keep him I won't be mad or anything. I will still watch and support our team next year as well. It's just not as fun not going to the tournament. It's kind of like football teams that don't go to bowl games or if they do they don't good ones.

I like and appreciate Judge's comments on here. I often have a different opinion, but he is very gentlemanly with his posts, and very thoughtful in his responses. That said, I do strongly believe the Brad Brownell experiment should be over, and just like Judge probably will be if and when a coaching change is made, I will be strongly supportive of the replacement for Brownell and will hope he has tremendous success at Clemson.

Brownell will have gone to the tournament 1 time in the last 11 full seasons after this season. Once it was up to him to recruit his own players he was done. I like Brad like all of us, but he needs to go possibly. There is no upside. We have nothing to lose by getting rid of him, unless we are in love with our next recruiting class. That could be a factor.

O2BN, The AD along with President Clements needs

Jan 20, 2022, 12:23 PM

to go to the BOT and ask: What do you want to see our Basketball program accomplish?

Should there be the slightest, "Ho Hum" or hesitancy, then we have our answer: status quo.

Though the board showed definitive interest in the re-renovation of LJ, I don't believe the 110 percent commitment to be there. Why not? They have been willing to accept mediocrity with our present programs.

I have maintained for years that it's going to take the type of commitment from the BOT downward that will generate support and excitement for our programs. It must be driven by our entire community and particularly by our student leadership with the belief: they will fill the seats if an exciting, WINNING product is on display! As a footnote, I don't know the configuration of LJ, but the secret is getting the students courtside and letting them raise the roof!

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: O2BN, The AD along with President Clements needs

Jan 20, 2022, 12:41 PM

I agree. On some level, the fans and students as well as the admin need more transparency on what the expectations are and what steps need to be taken to accomplish them. I sense a lot of people are frustrated, like me, in that we made this huge investment to catch up with some of the ACC, pay our HC a competitive salary, but haven’t made big gains as far as the optics of the program. I don’t believe that fully falls on Brad in terms of elements he can’t control like losing Zion to the highest bidder or players transferring for PT. If we want Brad to continue to be above board and run a clean program and recruit at a higher level, he needs as much support as he can get. I can tell you that he is one of the few in the ACC that is playing by the rules. Maybe it’s just not possible to do both at Clemson consistently right now or maybe Brad is even more strict than even other programs graduating players? Case in point, the Rick Barnes era. He was rockin the sleaze through and through and we were a top 25 team. We all knew it. So yea, what do we want and what are we doing to get there.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

benign and innocent post but really pretty inaccurate

Jan 20, 2022, 1:41 PM

He does, in fact, take jabs - subtly so - at the football program, as has been noticed by others. He's got quite a bit of hubris that oozes out, but he dispenses it judiciously and in small bursts. The other thing is he's never pinned things on the AD (he should have), but he blames fan support and lack of revenue being poured in, which apparently he doesn't see as the AD's fault, or he would've put more on the AD. His posts largely reflect that the fanbase "just doesn't support basketball like it should".

I want every sports team Clemson has to do well. I don’t live near Clemson so it’s hard to get to games during the week. If I lived closer I would attend more basketball and baseball games because I enjoy them occasionally but I am a huge football fan and always have been. The other 2 sports don’t appeal to me near as much. I think many Clemson fans are this way also. It’s not that they don’t support our basketball program but it’s just not their favorite sport to watch.
