I met Mike Noonan back 8-9 years ago when I was a coach with Furman United.

Doug Allison - the head coach of Furman University's soccer program - was supposed to be leading the meeting. Doug's a legend. Furman was a power, Doug's youth soccer camps draw literally thousands of kids every summer, all paying through the nose. Doug produced Clint Dempsey, arguably the best American soccer player of all time. (I'd have taken Clint over Landon Donovan.) He had Ricardo Clarke. He had Shea Salinas. His latest superstud is Walker Zimmerman, warrior savage and an often captain of the US National Team, a guy who will be on the plane to Qatar 2022. (And brother of our own Dawson Zimmerman, one of the best punters Clemson has ever had.)

But Doug couldn't make it for whatever reason, so our club director quietly invited Noonan, who was a complete unknown out of Brown, if memory serves. And he showed. And walked into this meeting of fairly skeptical Academy coaches, all used to Doug Allison...and utterly took it over, with his graciousness and intellect and presence. The dude just...had it.

I'm surprised. But I'm not shocked. What Clemson has attracts...some really good people, and while Noonan is a quiet introspective personality utterly unlike Dabo in just about every way, he's got the same sort of...presence. The dude is just significant, it takes about two minutes around him to figure that out.

Noonan has had I dunno how many first-round Major League Soccer draft picks over the last few years. A bunch. Including the first overall pick in 2019, when Robbie Robinson went first overall to David Beckham's Inter Miami expansion team. He actually beat Dabo to the first overall pick in his sport.

This was well-deserved. And it was always coming. The guy had done everything but win the big one. And it's honestly just a matter of time now before MLS comes knocking on Noonan's door. Hopefully we can keep him a few years longer.

Neat story brother! Happy for him and our Clemson men for gaining that third star

It is interesting we have been on the verge of doing this for a few years. Nice to see this one fall our way. They just were all over them from the very start yesterday. Amazing performance.
