I know there is a lot of T-Netters

Apr 23, 2022, 1:48 PM

that like the game of soccer. For the first time in my life, I set in front of the TV and watched 30 minutes of the game, and I'm positive I know even less about the game than I did before I wasted a precious 30 minutes of my life. To me, the game made absolutely no sense at all. The one thing I bet on concerning a soccer player, and that is, if he had to run for his life with a baseball, basketball, or FB player chasing after, his chances of getting away, and living to see another day are about 95 to 1 bc, those guys run the whole game, and their chances of scoring a point looks to be about 1 in 20 tries!!!

I'm sticking with the American sports that I grew up playing, like Baseball, FB, and a little Basketball... No more wasting time, or electricity watching a European kickball game, I'll leave it to the Bloody Blokes, and any other European country that loves that running game with a ball, and the ball looks like it was made with a lot of Patches sewed together!!!;)

If they would just do away with the offsides penalty, there would be a whole lot more scoring. :)

And it’s called the beautiful game. I personally love it. Lot of strategy and when executed is fun to watch for me personally. I played it instead of baseball because it bored me to stand out in the field with no guarantee of any action. One other thing that I think is cool is the Champions League which takes teams that qualify from each league across the world and put them in a tourney that actually determines the best club in the world.

One thing I have never understood in America is teams calling themselves world champs when they only play teams in the US.

If you have never been around the game I totally understand why you feel the way you do.

I'm living a bike ride from UEFA HQ in Nyon, Switzerland and there's a field right across the street from HQ. What they do there, I have no idea, but there are "matches" held. I had to Google UEFA to find out it has something to do with soccer.

Several times we've had opportunities to attend a "match", but never attended. I've tried watching on TV since the HQ is right down the street, but it's painful for me to watch. I'm in my 60's, so soccer wasn't a thing while I was growing up.

I like to tailgate, but the Swiss don't quite do it the way we do it!

But, to each their own! All I can say is, Go Tigers! Where ever in the world you might be!

Go Tigers AND Stay Well Clemson Nation!

I love soccer. It’s the world’s game, and I’m glad that it has gotten so popular in the U.S.

Apr 23, 2022, 3:41 PM

I played growing up, which is why I love it and also why I can appreciate the nuances of the game.

I certainly understand why you don’t enjoy it since you didn’t play it. Soccer also isn’t the best game for TV, and in the U.S. especially I think it’s hard for “new” sports to catch on when they aren’t as TV friendly for new fans.

If soccer is something you want to like more, I would encourage you to keep watching. You’ll soon develop a love for it.

Re: I know there is a lot of T-Netters

I've watched some soccer and still don't know much about it. If I get interested in soccer and my advice would be to do what I did when I moved to the Chicago area from SC and went to see the Blackhawks play some hockey. I took a co-worker whose son played hockey and he loved it. About the only thing I knew about hockey was what Rodney Dangefield said " I went to a fight the other night and a hockey game broke out." After 2 games with him, I was hooked and knew about everything a non-playing fan needs to know. Watching with someone knowledgable should work for soccer too.

All three kids played so I’ve been watching for 17 years now. My last one is still playing. I have no doubt that it takes speed, stamina, knowledge, skill and years of hard work.

Soccer is not a game of small victories or excitements

Apr 23, 2022, 4:52 PM

The only thing that really gets fans thrilled in a soccer game is a goal and there are not many of those.

As opposed to other sports where there are more “thrills” throughout a game. Even if it’s not always a score.
Basketball, constant scoring.
Baseball, hits, strikeouts etc
Football. Interceptions, fumbles, sacks, big hits, great catches, big runs.

All of those can be thrilling moments.

In soccer you have to appreciate things outside of just goals if you are going to enjoy watching the sport.

Soccer was invented as an inexpensive way to…

Apr 23, 2022, 8:35 PM

babysit children hundreds of years ago. You simply throw a cheap ball onto a grass field with 15-30 kids on it and shout “Kids in blue try to kick it into the net. Kids in red try to stop them.” The head babysitter for each team will typically tell the slowest kid to just stand in front of the net. That’s it. That’s all there is to it. Some kids never get better at other sports and end up in this daycare system longer than others. If you are really terrible at other sports, and your parents indulge you, you can pretty easily play soccer in college or at the pro level.

That’s soccer.

Probably my favorite post ever right here. So accurate and hilarious. Always annoying to hear from grown up spaz kids about how they were athletes cuz they played daycare in high school or college. Even worse when they hang out at daycare bars, talk about pro daycare leagues, and/or their favorite daycare teams from some far flung place that they have nothing to do with. Maybe they pick favorite teams based on what color unis their witto baby team wore when they were witty bitty soccaw pwayuhs

LOL....Henry, I'm not a big soccer fan, but while at CU

Apr 24, 2022, 7:01 AM

in the 60's, Clemson's first soccer coach, Coach Ibriham, visited me while I was Editor-in-Chief of "The Tiger" student newspaper to drum up support for our new team.

So, the Sports Editor and I went to several practices, met the team, and got educated about the sport. We also attended a number of matches. The paper covered the sport fairly well, introducing our readership to it, and thus began a tradition of top coverage. The Coach and I began a pretty good friendship over our willingness to provide that support.

My youngest brother played it in high school, but over the years I've limited my sports' enthusiasm to college football, and that's about it. I have a good many friends who love soccer, and I say good for them. And I'm mighty proud of Clemson's program, especially that recent national title.

As a side note, some French friends attended a Clemson football game with us years ago, and it literally took the whole game for them to catch on to the sport. One asked, "Do you ever get bored during the games?" LOL....They had a hard time getting used to all the set plays, time outs, etc. Had a big laugh about it.
