TNET: ESPN analyst reacts to Trevor Lawrence's 'no chip on shoulder' comments

ESPN analyst reacts to Trevor Lawrence's 'no chip on shoulder' comments

Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence had a candid interview recently with Sports Illustrated as he was the cover athlete for their May issue. Lawrence explained that he has no chip on his shoulder while playing football. This is probably because he has been the best player on the football field since Read Update »

That ESPN "anal-yst" misses the mark just a bit....

Apr 15, 2021, 8:27 PM

I don't recall Roger Stauback, Bob Greasy or even Fran Tarkenton ever having a chip on their shoulder; rather, they just played hard, had the talent, and were hugely successful. He must have been talking about Baker Mayfield, one of the biggest clowns I've ever witnessed at the QB position....

Trevor concentrates on doing his best for the team whenever he's on the field. If he's doing his best, NO ONE has to worry!

Re: That ESPN "anal-yst" misses the mark just a bit....

Apr 16, 2021, 10:16 AM

Right, I think that's the trick though; we never saw him at his absolute best. We know he's capable of doing better, and we know it's exceptionally rare that anyone is capable of being what Trevor is capable of.
Not everyone can do it. Trevor can. Will he? I hope so. But while I don't like the way Riddick suggested it, I do like the idea of Trevor finally hitting his ceiling, I just don't know how he gets there.

Riddick at least deserves enough respect from US here at Clemson to not use "anal-yst" to describe him, IMO.

Re: That ESPN "anal-yst" misses the mark just a bit....

Apr 16, 2021, 12:00 PM

Louis Riddick is just a straight out racist, but in an ESPN way. A smooth talking racist. He cannot see past the color of a QB or a coach and it always comes up in his commentary. Just turn him OFF. I rarely watch ESPN any more, just when the Tigers are playing, even Sportcenter stinks now as well.

He thinks Trevor is the top pick over Justin Fields due to race even if he will not say it directly.
Fields is a good QB, and will get picked to have an opportunity in the NFL.
Tony Dungy is complete opposite, looks at capability and results.

Re: That ESPN "anal-yst" misses the mark just a bit....

Apr 16, 2021, 12:09 PM

I gotta disagree, especially as a Tiger.

After all, we've had people do the same thing for Coach Swinney and with vastly more evidence. It's a dangerous accusation that shouldn't be taken lightly, even anonymously on an internet board. Dabo's not a racist, & I can't ignore the difference. Just my two cents.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: That ESPN "anal-yst" misses the mark just a bit....

Apr 17, 2021, 9:16 PM

Respect your two cents.
IMO Riddick is guilty as charged. That’s why I quit watching him.
Tony Dungy is solid, side by side with Riddick there is no comparison.
Riddick is a joke.

There are race baiters at ESPN, but I've never heard anything from Riddick to suggest he is. He is lot more professional as a game day analyst than many of the mooks doing NFL games.

Re: I know plenty of people with a chip on their shoulder who

Apr 16, 2021, 12:01 AM

Well if Louis Riddick would have ever made it a point to meet, and talk to Trevor Lawrence, he would've understood that Trevor don't need gimmicks like a self imposed chip on his shoulder to play, and win FB games. He would've learned that Trevor's preparation, and very strong commitment is all that Trevor has ever needed to win games at the highest level that he's played, and he will be the exact same Trevor in the NFL, just as he has been since playing Pee Wee, High School, and through college. Trevor has applied his talent, and the body type that God has blessed him with, and he has play QB at a championship level, at every level of FB that he has ever played, and it will come to him just as easy in the NFL as it has for him at every level of FB that he has played since the Pee Wee level.

I really don't believe that a person regardless of their job, should be making comments about someone that he himself has admitted, has never met, and never having any conversation with Trevor whatsoever at any time. That only makes him dumber than he wants people to know for sure, that he really is. Stupid is, stupid does is what he has made himself out to be without QUESTION!!!! Those comments made by Riddick only goes to prove without a doubt, that ESECPN is really cutting corners, and they are hiring people that if they can spell sports at least once out of 10 tries. It is my belief that, Riddick couldn't spell sports with all 10 of his tries, but, affirmative action got him hired even after failing the ESECPN spelling test to secure employment with them!!! What a dumb A$$ for making those comments about someone he doesn't know, and never in his life has ever met. To me, that is no different than him telling people that know him well, that he can bench press a bus, and thinking they believe him, and yes, I do think that he is just that stupid!!!

Apr 16, 2021, 10:14 AM [ in reply to Re: I know plenty of people with a chip on their shoulder who ]

Y'all, I don't think that's what he's saying AT ALL though.

I agree, it would be better for anyone to meet Trevor first to have an opinion, but I met him & it didn't change much, & I think anyone here who hasn't met him wouldn't be surprised what he's like in person.

However, we have still not seen Trevor hit his ceiling. That's the outlier. I don't know if that's what Riddick was indirectly trying to suggest, but for as magnificent as Trevor was here at CU, we never saw him at his peak.

That's OK, but I absolutely crave it. I'd love nothing more than to see Trevor play at his absolute limit. I think many of us thought it would change in year 2, and who knows, maybe if we had him for one more year we'd have seen it in 2021? But I can't pretend I don't want to see Trevor hit Young/Brady levels of ability performance.

I think the point is in spite of how great Trevor was here at CU we never saw him hit his ceiling, and if he wants to do that it takes a special edge. His ceiling is higher than most outright, know what I mean? I sure hope we see it one day. It could be transcendent.

W T F did Louis Riddick just say and what exactly does it have to do with Trevor's comments? He was "taken aback"? What an absurd non sequitur. Louis Riddick should come over to the P&R board and spread his ridiculous, nonsensical, random comments so he will fit in with the other Trumpie nutjobs there.

If the election were held today Trump would win in a landslide. Millions of people are already regretting their votes. People might not like his personality, but he was right about a lot of things, including retards like you on the left. How are intelligent people like you so brainwashed? I think you want once said you used to be in the media. I guess that explains it.

The Democrats and people like you ignore the facts and think with nothing but your emotions like children. Everything being shown on mainstream media today is a lie and propaganda. BLM, antifa, systemic racism, it’s all BS! Even people like James Lindsay, Peter Boghossian, Jonathan Turley, Brett and Eric Weinstein, Jonathan Haidt, John McWhorter, Sam Harris, and many other lifelong and highly respected progressive and academic thought leaders are all calling this far left stuff nonsense! Because it is nonsense and it’s based in lies propaganda and emotions!

Thomas Sowell started out as a radical Marxist, until he worked for the government one summer. Lifelong liberal Democrat Dave Rubin when he interviewed Sowell asked what changed your mind about being a radical and about being a big government progressive and Thomas Sowell responded, the facts! It only took the man a few months as an intern during grad school with the government for him to wake up to the reality of what big/centralized government is, which is an epic failure.

It never ceases to amaze me how intelligent people like you that graduated from Clemson long before social media and millennials are so weak minded and gullible because that’s what you have to be to be brainwashed to this extent. Everything people like you believe is based on emotions and propaganda. You wouldn’t know science or a fact if you tripped over it. Do you think transsexuals should be competing against girls and women? Do you think CNN covered the presidential election much less the last four years objectively? Have you read the Time magazine article where that idiot is bragging about how the media Hollywood the Democrats big tech all colluded to beat Trump? You probably think Biden is doing a good job or that he’s competent. People like you and your whole right side of history BS are going to be looked at in 30 to 50 years as not only on the wrong side of history but emotional & hysterical children that were gullible and ignorant or as Lenin used to say, useful idiots!

Re: Sounds like a lot of Tnetters have a chip on their shoulder.

Apr 16, 2021, 10:26 AM

I was thinking the same thing.

To be fair, we've become an "us against the world" culture here, so to speak. Can't change it, just like you don't get to pick your coaches. But many fans & representatives of Clemson take it as you're either completely with us or absolutely against us no matter how many times Coach Swinney tells us otherwise & for us to lead with respect.

I think he's saying what many of us are painfully aware of; we never saw Trevor Lawrence hit his ceiling. Make no mistake, his ceiling is higher than virtually anyone we've ever seen play the sport, but if he's ever going to hit that ceiling it's going to take more than a good attitude, particularly in the league that likely isn't as conditional for performance & prep as it was here at Clemson (i.e., many of these guys get vastly more discipline in college than when they're rich in the league).

LOL

Ever heard of context?

Nothing negative?

He's questioning TL's work ethic and motivation, which has nothing to do with a chip on your shoulder. The entire take was ignorant and nonsensical.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Sounds like a lot of Tnetters have a chip on their shoulder.

Apr 16, 2021, 12:11 PM

But that's not what he's saying, though?

It sounds more like suggesting Trevor at his worst is still vastly better than most, but we simply haven't seen him at his absolute best. Maybe we never will? But the idea of seeing it is enough to make me drool.

I don't know if it's an extra edge, an injury, or a "chip" that could make it possible, but in all sincerity it doesn't happen on accident, know what I mean? If he can do it, however he gets there, it will be transcendent.

Apr 16, 2021, 6:30 AM

The article posts the least offensive comments by this clown. Listen to the whole segment if you'd like to have a conniption. They get into race and how it used to be "either Trevor or Justin Fields" would be the number 1 overall pick. But black QBs always fall just before the draft. He also said TL lacked the commitment to beat the Patriots and the Colts, and that this was different that playing Wake Forest, Duke and other ACC weaklings. The dude just went full ###### for about 5 minutes.

Re: I heard this live yesterday and about wrecked my car

Apr 16, 2021, 10:31 AM

Maybe he's not wrong?

One of the things that frustrated me about Trevor's career is that we never got to see him truly hit his ceiling. Frankly I'm not even sure it's close, but another part of the problem is he so rarely got to play against competition worthy of it.

I don't want to bash the ACC outright, I really don't (I want it to improve & I'm still hopeful the ACC Network will help) but most years Trevor & Clemson was a Ferrari racing against broken bicycles. The Heisman, for example, was never within Trevor's or Etienne's reach because of the lack of competition rather than in spite of it (except for 2020 which was oddly our most exciting & competitive season in ages including the most-watched game in ACC history outright).

The same is true this year; we don't control our own destiny to the CFP or awards like the Heisman, and while I know this is a little off-topic, I do sincerely believe playing more teams that were fundamentally competitive might have helped Trevor make that change to come that much closer to hitting his ceiling. I'd love to see it, and I THINK that only comes from having a chip on your shoulder, so to speak, something extra to drive you rather than being prepared and naturally more gifted than anyone else on the field any given Saturday/Sunday.

I kinda like it. We never saw Trevor's ceiling here at CU. I think many expected his accuracy to improve in year 2 but we've never truly see him play at the pinnacle of his own abilities. I feel like we're missing something from the reaction (is he suggesting Trevor work harder or what?), but the idea that one day we might see that ceiling is enough for me to watch more Jacksonville football.

I dunno, MOST of our games are on ESPN (and usually all but one of the rest are on ESPN-owned ACC Network). We get Gameday here every year which I love, and they're largely good to us here at CU outright.

I don't really watch the channel except for live games and Gameday, though. But still, I'd hate to imagine not having the coverage of the game itself ESPN provides. It's sincerely amazing, and wouldn't have been possible in the past, particularly with many of our recent schedules. Whenever we get to see Clemson on ESPN channels, I'm thrilled (including on my phone, which is amazing).
