Now that Roe versus Wade is overturned

Jun 24, 2022, 7:10 PM

The Republicans have instantly made the mid-terms interesting all of a sudden. If they squeak it out, brilliant. If not, oh boy.

Just wondering if Republicans have bitten off the nose to spite the face here?

It gives the dems a rallying cry. But I do think the bigger cry will be the lack of money in everyone's pocket.

Agree. The economy is the biggest issue, followed closely by safety from rising crime. Not many votes are going to change over abortion.

Jun 24, 2022, 7:56 PM

but let's try....

Suppose you're a poor girl somewhere in East Texas who was raped by her shiiittty drunken uncle at 16 years old.

You get pregnant but you can't afford to travel to another state. You are now forced to have the child.

If you say, it's God's will tuff and have it then I have no words.

Re: I know it's difficult for some of you to imagine...

Jun 24, 2022, 8:10 PM

This is why you base laws on solid ground, such as congressional acts ( a la the Civil Rights Act) or a constitutional amendment.

A court ruling is not a strong foundation for a law or right, and it foolish to base the right to an abortion on a court ruling.

Jun 24, 2022, 8:44 PM [ in reply to Re: I know it's difficult for some of you to imagine... ]

The thing I find the most ironic is that a man can walk into a grocery store with a gun in a state like New York and kill a bunch of people because he doesn't like the color of their skin and he's not subject to capital punishment because that's not allowed in states like that. Yet those same states will ultimately uphold abortion laws and continue to allow innocent unborn babies to be murdered by their mothers. Evildoers are allowed to live, yet innocent babies are not?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

In that scenario what does skin color have to do with it?

The situation you reference is an incredibly difficult one,

and a girl in that situation does not deserve to be coldly dismissed as a statistical anomaly, but less than 1% of abortions are performed secondary to rape.

Public policy must address the problem honestly and in full view of the data. It’s the other 99% that deserves the most focus when it comes to this issue. Anything less is myopic sensationalism.

Today we took a bit of a step back to a constitutional republic imo. I see that as a good thing.

It’s a state’s rights issue. We have been slowly moving away from that for a while.

I’m not sure which way keeps us more fractioned as a nation. But today’s decision will be a ruff patch to get thru. We’ve been used to having the court help legislate for so long, most past the boomers don’t know it any other way.

Not really my question though.

Jun 24, 2022, 7:44 PM

I am not speaking about the morality of it, that's a different discussion.

Republicans were on course to take the senate and possibly the house at the midterms. Polling shows that overwhelmingly (again not to agree or disagree with abortion here) for a woman's right to choose.

My question is, so overloading the court with religious conservates that overturn Roe v Wade with so many American's agreeing with R v W hurt Republicans' chances in the midterms?

We know how most districts and states will go. Those purple states except for Georgia and maybe NC are going to have even looser abortion laws. Watch the reaction the next week or 2. If civil unrest does erupt that hurts Dems. Polling has largely showed a solid majority favors some limitations on abortions nationwide. Only idiotic states like California and a few others have basically no limitations.

By November we could have hyper-inflation, a recession, and a ground war expanding in Europe. Abortion won't be driving the vote, 401K's and food shortages will be

But people that support a right to choose I think uat aren't aware of what actually goes on and what a baby is .. I mean has you ever given it a thal thought, read stories of regret from a lot of those women. You take the common abortion situation of an unintended pregnancy from a consensual relationship... FWIW, I think the red blaze that was coming in November may have lost some momentum today.

Ultimately, I get the whole "decision should be with the states" thought; however, I don't agree necessarily with this decision being one of them.

IMO decisions like this should be between the folks that make them and God/the universe/whatever their beliefs.

One thing I do find odd is that....why this now? Does anyone know what actually prompted the Supreme Court to look into this?

I saw where the whole "we believe the powers back then were abusing their privilege" thing but I didn't actually see why this needed to be reviewed when I went searching for more on this.

Just seems odd.

Economy seems to always trump social issues when it comes to elections. If we are dealing with inflation and are in or close to a recession, that’s what people will care about - not abortion laws.

Besides, once the smoke clears a lot of the overly dramatic claims that women can’t get abortions now will have quieted down.

Re: Now that Roe versus Wade is overturned

Jun 25, 2022, 8:52 AM

The simple story: So the Supreme Court Justices are nominated by Presidents, confirmed by the Senate and then appointed to serve for as long as they choose. Their job is to review and uphold CONSTITUTIONAL issues as it pertains to law.

So here comes Dodd v Jackson, MS Women's Health Clinic because the Mississippi Legislature voted to place restrictions on abortions. It made it through the courts to SCOTUS.

You and others think and speak as of it was Republicans but it was the Supreme Court, nine people appointed by Presidents and approved by the Senate. In the case of Dodd v Jackson ... the SCOTUS voted 6 - 3 (appointed by Republican and Democratic presidents) that the state has the right to make the decision when it comes to abortion, not the Federal Gov't. Once that was out of the way, it was like why is there Roe v Wade in existence since States have control over abortion and there is NO Constitutional basis for abortions. The SCOTUS voted and the decision to overturn Roe v Wade was approved 5 - 4.

It's the State Elections that citizens need to concentrate on. Pro-Life and Pro-Choice decisions will be made at the State level because I don't believe in my lifetime there will be enough majority of any party to make abortion a Federal Law through Congress.
