I held off crying wolf about SEC bias and all that...

Dec 9, 2019, 9:09 PM

But it's bad in the selection committee room this year in a horrible way.

First, UF was over-rated all year.

Secondly, Alabama wasn't held accountable for a weak schedule like we were.

Thirdly, UGA was hardly penalized for a bad Chicken loss.

Finally, to hear the commissioner of the playoff committee admit that there was a debate between UGA and OK getting the forth spot sealed it for me, WTH?

Instead of UGA having a crappy offense like almost all season, it was that LSU's defense turned it all around. Texas A&M was the fluke and so was UNC.

LSU's defense is still bad. Go OKIES!

If we had an 8 team playoff LSU, UGA, Bama and UF would all most likely be in the playoffs. The fact that they debated UGA as 4th spot after getting dismantled by LSU tells you all you need to know about the SEC bias. Oregon should've been the debate not UGA. The only reason for a 8 team playoff would be to get more SEC teams in

Exactly Right!

They want Georgia in so badly despite the fact -- watch for these football reasons coming up -- Georgia could not threaten you with it's WR group! Pickens - a FR - was their best threat! That's not scary and not real difficult for most good teams! Where did Georgia rank in passing efficiency? Passing y/g? They were Wisconsin with a much better defense and personnel. Which is to say - depend on running the football behind a big OL then play action pass off of that for big plays.

The fact they still wanted them in this year and last despite losing more than 1 game is more proof of SEC bias!
You would have to be really uninformed to think ( each and every week ) SEC teams are playing a gauntlet schedule every week. As has been stated Georgia State, Memphis, San Jose St, Portland, UL Monroe, plus more thought it was especially tough to walk in an SEC house and either win or nearly win.
The SEC's top teams are as good as anybody in the country - I give you that. But, beyond that, dismiss yourself with the notion every team is hard. Looking down all the teams the last few years who have made the CFP - nobody has played a "gauntlet". Including Alabama. In fact, that's one of the things the Big 10 folks criticize about the SEC: their OOC opponents! Big 10 teams don't or rarely play FCS opponents; instead opting for MAC/AAC or Sun Belt opponents! SEC teams OOC schedules are a complete joke and well documented for the easy factor. Supposedly because they will face a gauntlet in conference. Not really.
You play your easy games after having been ranked high pre-season. Then go on to play other over-hyped and over-rated conference games. Now the narrative is self-fullfilled as you have either beaten or lost to "ranked opponents"! You still get wins because of the before mentioned easy OOC schedule; so your record looks good. Mix in the bottom dwellers of your conference(which is the secret ingredient) and violla! A team can finish 8-4 and ranked ahead of 1 loss teams or 2 and 3 loss teams - mainly due to perception!
Because they obviously didn't beat those teams on the football field. Just the perception of how good their conference is: "keeps them ranked and looking tough"!

Doesn't matter who is after 4 when they decide who is in the playoff. 5 is the same as 50. There are only 4 spots.

Committee this year has been criminally bad

Dec 9, 2019, 9:15 PM

First penn state ahead of us in initial rankings? Gtfooh. Then the whole uga fiasco. No penalty for losing to a HORRIBLE uofsuc team and looking terrible all year yet somehow still 4. THEN they get TRUCKED by LSU and fall ONE spot, ONE!!!! How the hell can you put them above Oregon, or Baylor, or really anyone else in the top 10. These clowns should have to answer for this crap. Its no wonder sec teams have such resumes when losing doesnt count and teams never drop.

ST

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It's real!

Dec 9, 2019, 9:48 PM

I wish I could put it more eloquently but here goes.

Every year you get the pre-season rankings which are totally an opinion poll. Not a down has been played. No TD's scored; yet certain teams year after year get their "almost guaranteed" top 25 ranking! Naturally - if you are in the conference with those teams you will have the opportunity to knock these squads off. If you lose to one you don't get knocked for it because ding ding ding - "they are a ranked opponent"!
Pretty much every P5 schools plays "lay up games" because FBS has no pre-season game. Which should change i.m.o.
You win your lay-up game. Some teams play 3 lay-up games then go into their conference. Let's say you are the beneficiary of having a bunch of your conference mates ranked. You are now 3-0 and you now get to beat a "ranked opponent"! That ranked opponent has likely had lay-up games too mind you. Now, you lose to that team. Well, your 3-1 - but you lost to a "ranked opponent". And Heaven forbid it's a close loss! Heck, you probably only drop 2 spots.
Perception being the reality it is - you get the benefit of the doubt of having played a "worthy opponent"! Now the reality is - you or the other ranked team are any good compared to the actual top teams in the sport. But, the perception of how tough a time you have had is there, so you skate! You live off the reputation of teams who have graduated and are now local legends at their school. Not even your school.

The caveat to all that is: there is only room for 25 teams to get this benefit and if you aren't in the club - you're short!

2024 purple level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Bottom line - all rankings are beauty pageants, and things

Dec 9, 2019, 11:40 PM

like "resumes" and strength of schedule are just flawed opinions based on those beauty pageant rankings. All of this feeds upon and then perpetuates an ongoing subjective perception that is not based in objective reality. In football, the objective should be to win (fairly and within the rules), to be victorious over the oponnent. Instead, that is not enough, and it is more important for teams to impress poll voters and committee members, which may or may not be directly tied to winning and losing.

there is one SEC AD and one former coach from A&M when they werent in the SEC as I recall. SO if there is a bias for the SEC it isnt in the immediately apparent affiliation of the present members.

Dec 9, 2019, 9:29 PM

Schedule until they got their 2nd L. Now at 13 I actualluly think they are the 1 SEC team that is under ranked . The rest are over. Bama is probably the 4th best team. Probably should be ranked about 6 and ahead of UGA.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

For the record, I think he was being diplomatic

Dec 9, 2019, 9:30 PM

Regarding the Georgia - Oklahoma “discussion”. I think the question was basically phrased as “this was pretty clear the four teams who were in, was there even a debate for the fourth spot?” And he didn’t want to sound dismissive or cavalier as the committee head, so of course he fed some BS about “well yea we put the teams up there against each other and evaluated” - I doubt a single person in that room actually vouched for GA. They just wanna sound like they’re doing their best job

Utah and UGA made it easy for the committee. I think ORE should have been 5, but it really doesn't matter. I guess I can see the rationale of UGA's 3 "big wins" compared to ORE. But hey never should have even been considered for #4

Re: I held off crying wolf about SEC bias and all that...

Dec 9, 2019, 9:54 PM

But if I was on the CFPC, I would put UGA over Oregon for the simple reason of common opponent Auburn. Oregon lost to Auburn, and UGA beat Auburn. 'nuff said IMO.

It worked that way for Minnesota after they beat PSU. It then became difficult for PSU to be ranked higher than Minn.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I held off crying wolf about SEC bias and all that...

Dec 9, 2019, 9:59 PM

In that case - no one gets the - early season pass!

The team Oregon ended up being would beat the team Auburn ended up being in my opinion. If they show up I should say; b/c the ducks seemed like they could play with anybody but then looked like they could lose to anybody. Georgia played Auburn late - would they have beaten them early? Or would Auburn have benefited just like the Chickens did by getting them "early"?

Teams get better as the season goes on. Look no further than the Tigers!

I think 4 teams is just right

Dec 9, 2019, 10:03 PM [ in reply to Re: I held off crying wolf about SEC bias and all that... ]

Currently, it's the only playoff around that really is special. It makes every single game really important - kind of like it was back in the old days of MLB; pennant races & the best team from the National & best from the American played the WS.

Even with 4-teams, there's room to "sneak in" a Committee favorite. If they go even to 8 teams - the 3 or 4 SEC or Big 10 scenarios will become reality.

What would stink up the whole thing would be going to a watered-down joke like we have now in MLB, NBA, NFL, NCAA Tourney - and the bloated Bowl System. 40 bowls is ridiculous. Though still biased & subjective, when there were far fewer of them, it meant a whole lot more to get an invite. What does it mean now to go to the "Hefty Trashbag Bowl" in Fargo, ND?

Same with the folks who won't criticize Georgia! Georgia had glaring weaknesses at WR.

I didn’t take the comment that they seriously considered Georgia. To me it sounded like Georgia was brought up because they had been #4 previously, and the discussion was pretty much “so does anyone disagree that Oklahoma moves ahead of Georgia?” Then nobody disagreed and it was over.

What makes it the best?

Dec 10, 2019, 4:30 AM

Seriously? What makes the SEC the best? They don't play anyone other than themselves and Clemson. First game of the year, at a cushy spot is as close as they come. Yeah...let's hear it for Louisville and Duke...way to step out, Bama. Florida? Why leave home?

It's a lathered up conference of perception that's been carried by an elephant for ten years...period. If Bama didn't show, they had nothing. Zilch. Nada. Kaput! If you play among yourselves only, you don't know...until the bowls show otherwise...at which point, 'You didn't want to be there...or were tired'. Cry me a river! They're humorless, cardboard, mechanical programs who suck the joy and life from their players...and light up the resumes of their staffs with false perceptions of accomplishment. That's who SEC programs are.

Continual feeding SEC perception coupled with a 4-team playoff will kill college football.

Actually, the 4-team will kill it all by itself. It's already started...

The SEC has the best players overall. If one doean't realize that than they know nothing about college football. The SEC is clearly the best. The ACC sucks outside of us right now. There are 5 teams in the SEC that would likely win the ACC if we werent in it and they were. The Pac 12 sucks. The Big 12? Meh. It comes down to whether you think Big 10 is better than the SEC. To me and to just about anyone that knows college football, the SEC is clearly the best overall. What conference do you think is better than the SEC.

Re: What makes it the best?

Dec 10, 2019, 9:12 AM

The SEC homers like Findbum, Teabow & others have to go in every year in March for rotator cuff surgery from patting eachother on the back and throat surgery from crowing about the SEC power! In fact the SEC is usually a whipping ground for Alabama...yeah once in a while Florida sneaks in and the homers are always rooting for the great Georgia team...once in a while the Bayou criminals get on parole and win, then back to Angola and occasionally Auburn...but mostly Misery, Arkansas, Aggies, Vandy, ChicFilA, and the drunks from Tenn & Kentuck all roll over and play dead! There is a southern good ole boy club that colludes with sportswriters in the south and elsewhere (places where football is king) and they must keep it going! Why else would you have a Findbum payed year after year to do what he does! (Read Dabo quote about critics from the little bald man from Memphis) Go Tigers!
