I have been wondering about 3 Plays involving Tanner Muse

Dec 23, 2019, 7:18 PM

In the championship game last year Tanner Muse was playing around 15 yards off the line of scrimmage and Jerry Jeudy, on an all out run, faked left then went right and Tua hit him for a touchdown. Tanner was moving back slightly but Jeudy was running at full speed and there was no way Tanner could make the change of direction and defend Jeudy.

Sort of the same thing happened in the Va. game on the first long pass.

Then again on the Virginia's first touchdown.

How are you supposed to defend this play. The receiver is running full speed and there is no way a defender who is not moving backwards quickly is going to be able to defend the deep ball. And, if you move back too quickly the receiver can cut sharply left or right and the defender will not be able to change directions quickly enought to defend that play.

What should the safety be doing as the receiver is running full speed at him?

If a safety is matched up on a wide receiver it is either busted coverage or a corner blitz. Only way to defend is to jam the receiver at the line of scrimmage and hope the blitz gets to the QB or the safety better be back peddling and concede a reception in front of him. Bottom line, don’t get beat deep.

Soft coverage, more cushion. But difficult to stop the run and comeback route.
That's what happened in the BAMA game.
Fortunately, we stopped them in the redzone when there were no space for WR's speed to develop. And that's the reason we won big.

Be more like Terrell

It's hard in man coverage for a Safety on a WR. But if you are in man coverage then there should be an extra rusher so that the qb does not have the time to go long. Maybe someone up front didn't do their job and the DB looks bad because of it.

Safeties are usually on an island when called upon to cover one on one. Very few can keep up with a WR. In my opinion it’s best to just tackle the WR and take the penalty.

It was a poor play call that had Muse singled up on Jeudy. When that happens, Muse has to make the best of it by playing soft on Jeudy and not biting on the fake.

There was no opportunity to jam Jeudy at the line. Muse was almost 15 yards off the line of scrimmage.

Muse is aggressive to jump routes and it always looked to me like he was expecting a slant as Alabama loves ti run the slant

I think it was a preplanned slant or go route called by bama based on read of muse by that WR

Tua never looked anywhere else and threw after the break/separation

Sometimes the other guy makes a good play
Muse got his later on the 4th down stop!

When Tanner gets locked up one on one with a WR, BV is gambling on the rush getting to the QB quickly or forcing the QB to check it down quickly. Tanner has to give plenty of cushion and turn his hips early to run with the WR. if he is still getting beat, which can happen, then he interferes to stop the long pass from being completed and gives them the 15 yards. Line up and try again.

The problem in the Bama Game is that Tanner was not close enough to even interfere with that pass.

I think you will see OSU try to exploit this exact scenarion. It will be up to BV and Tanner to disguise when we are in this position and to play it a little safer. He's called a safety for a reason.

It's really just good play calls against a blitz. AND they blocked the blitz. You are trying to make the QB get rid of the ball. If you don't get to him, you are in trouble

Some defenders will grab the receivers facemask as he tries to run by and pull him to the ground to take him out of the play, but that's sort of frowned upon and usually draws a 15 yard penalty. However, the penalty is not as bad as giving up an easy TD.
