In market for new grill...

Apr 5, 2019, 12:34 PM

Big green Egg? Worth it or just hype? Traeger? Old school Weber charcoal? Some other cooking system?

Or just go simple and get propane?

I am trusting the lounge on this one, don't steer me wrong

They are considered UDP around here. But...

I’ve had a couple Weber Charcoal grills in my lifetime that served me very well. But they are really only useful for charcoal grilling. I had to use a separate smoke box for smoking and also had a Weber Gas grill. You could technically cook low and slow on a Weber kettle grill, but it’s not ideal. It’s a good charcoal grill but somewhat one dimensional. That’s all I got for now.

Buuurp!

I'm in abt 15 years in on a stainless Ducane.

Apr 5, 2019, 12:48 PM

Love it, mostly. Replaced darned near every part on it at one time or another. Only thing I don't like is that it has five burners. I'd prefer four because even at the lowest setting, it will stay at 300 degrees+ with the lid down. Makes low-n-slow (BBQ chicken for example) cooking difficult. I can turn off several burners and cook indirect, but it's tricky to get even cooking that way. I'd rather have lower flames/less burners/whatever with more even heat.

Next gas grill will have to be one that on low will stay at 225-250 minimum. I only need a max of 450 too. I can crank my Ducane up to 500-600+ on high with the lid down. Totally overkill.

How are you getting parts? They went under a good while ago.***

There are plenty online.

Apr 5, 2019, 1:14 PM [ in reply to How are you getting parts? They went under a good while ago.*** ]

Replaced the burners 3 times, thermometer once, main gas line once, grate once, shields over burners twice. Have to use a match to light it. Refuse to pay $30 for the electronic ignition knobs. THey regulate gas and that's fine with me. I'll save $150 and use a match to light.

Here's my grill

Plenty of parts:

ok, so where'd you get parts?

Apr 5, 2019, 1:13 PM [ in reply to I'm in abt 15 years in on a stainless Ducane. ]

I think I can salvage my SS Grates, but need new diffusers* & knobs....maybe even a front panel

* I'm sure I can just find some that fit

nevermind, found a link

Only expensive part I replaced was the grate.

Apr 5, 2019, 1:23 PM

Rest of the stuff is relatively cheap. Like $30 or less.

Pro tip - Forgive if german but...

If you have an all stainless grill like this, you're better off NOT putting a cover over it. The cover can cause condensation and moisture inside to actually be worse than if it doesn't have one. I was incredulous when a guy told me this, but it's been 4-5 years now and I haven't replaced the burners or anything on it. Seems to have reduced the rusting of the burners/grate/thermal covers, etc. which I replaced more frequently than anything else. All the non-stainless stuff inside seems to last longer.

This is my experience as well. Especially on the coast.

Apr 5, 2019, 1:44 PM

My grill is on a covered porch though. The stainless propane grill i got for my wedding lasted 10 years with no parts replacements until i decided i wanted a pellet grill. I gave the stainless to a buddy. I told him not to cover it. He did. It rotted away in about 2 years after that.

Cleaning your grill is probably the #1 life extender. Especially for burners/heat deflectors.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I only clean the grate, with a wire brush.

Apr 5, 2019, 2:03 PM

If I cook with BBQ sauce or something I will crank up the heat and burn it off then brush the grate down with a wire brush.

I don't do it like i should either because it's messy AF

Apr 5, 2019, 2:30 PM

But it does help.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

How do you sear a steak?

Apr 5, 2019, 1:21 PM [ in reply to I'm in abt 15 years in on a stainless Ducane. ]

You need 700+ (maybe 900+) to do it like the steakhouse do

2024 purple level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgbadge-ringofhonor-fordprefect.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't do it that high.

Apr 5, 2019, 1:27 PM

Start on abt 450 and sear each side in a mesh pattern. Flames usually come up at 450 anyway which probably bumps it up to steakhouse level. Anyway, after searing like 1 minute each side x 2, I keep lid up, let it cool to about 350 as I let it finish.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgringofhonor-tiggity-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think it's one of the best pure charcoal grills

Apr 5, 2019, 12:55 PM [ in reply to They are considered UDP around here. But... ]

you can set up two zone cooking pretty easy on it and it directs heat pretty well. But you're right, other types of grilling require some rigging.

2024 purple level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgbadge-ringofhonor-fordprefect.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Charcoal.

What are your goals with this grill?

Apr 5, 2019, 1:25 PM

I remember I bought one in college and it was ~$19.00

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Of course I'd like it all...

Apr 5, 2019, 1:22 PM [ in reply to What are your goals with this grill? ]

Sure would be cool to cook chicken quickly one night and slow cook some ribs the next.

I'm thinking of a BGE, with a little Weber q grill as backup that can also serve as a tailgate grill

2024 purple level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I aim to get this before football season.

Apr 6, 2019, 11:37 PM

Yeah but how often do you actually cook on the grill each week? I live In Texas. I use my grill 4 to 5 times a week. Even in the winter (if you call it that). Doubt it would last 20 years.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg2005_bowl_champ.gif flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

BGE or GTFO!

Apr 5, 2019, 2:39 PM

Nah, sirriusly though, I've had a BGE for the past 9 yrs, best/last grill I will ever own. Completely changed how we cook at our house. Doesn't take much time to get coals to 500+ and if you like smoking, it'll hold at 225 for over 24 hrs.

If you do get a BGE, don't buy all the BGE licensed add-ons

https://ceramicgrillstore.com

They have better stuff at a fraction of the cost. Really, any kamado style grill will do the job, ain't gotta be a BGE. Happy grillin' and Go Tigers!

Don't overcomplicate things.

This thing right here is a tank: https://www.charbroil.com/performance-series-tru-infrared-3-burner-gas-grill-463274019

Buy a smoker separate.
