Unapologetic attitude of physicality

Dec 2, 2022, 11:46 PM

Did you hear the announcer say that the Utah team has an unapologetic attitude of physicality?
I’m jealous!

I think he’s envious of their DC.

I HATE that term

Dec 3, 2022, 12:01 AM

The first time I ever heard it was herbasstreit say it. Now its this huge football term that everyone throws around. I hate hearing "set the edge", too.

And yes I'm jealous. Especially because the "physicality" resides in their secondary as well.

How could you possibly hate the term set the edge?

Dec 3, 2022, 5:52 AM

That’s a technical term. How else do you describe that action?

I would put physicality at the top of the list of terms I hate. Wish we had a football team that was physical but hate the word physicality. Followed closely by “dialed up”. So and so dialed up a blitz. Ugh. Then trifecta. It’s just a three pointer it’s not a trifecta.

“Setting the edge” is a real thing and an age old concept

Unlike “physicality” which is gobbledygook commentator speak

According to dictionary.com, we are misusing the word.

Dec 3, 2022, 7:38 AM

When I hear of "physicality" in sports terms (specificality football) I think of "physical toughness." I think of it as meaning, "Arrive in a hurry and be in a bad mood when you get there."

I term I loved to use when I was coaching was "slobberknock." As in, "I want you to go out there and slobberknock that guy." Or a big hit was, "That was a slobberknocker."

Dictionary.com defines it as
the physical attributes of a person, especially when overdeveloped or overemphasized.
preoccupation with one's body, physical needs, or appetites.
