Did you ever stop to think that all that swinging of golf clubs may have been what destroyed your shoulder to start with? And if you received an artificial shoulder, your golf swing will never be the same nor as good as when you had your natural shoulder. Follow your doctor’s advice and don’t rush it. Please don’t do any more damage to your shoulder.

Just make certain you follow what your physical therapist tells you and you will be ok. The 4 months sounds right. I am 4 months passed my back surgery and I want be back to playing until, hopefully, October. Finished therapy but doctor is very careful and cautious about me swinging a club just yet.

I have had 5 rotator cuff surgeries over last 20 years. 2 on the left and 3 on the right. Both bothering me again. Asked ortho doc about replacement last year. He said I’m not a candidate at 57. I’m back on the golf course in 12-16 weeks after rotator cuff repair but it’s probably 6 months before I’m comfortable taking a completely full swing. Couple of people I know that have had full replacements swear by it and returned to full range of motion.

Amazing that once you get over 50 there are so many things we are no longer candidates. I have a tear in my labrum and the doctor said he wouldn't do surgery because I was over 50. He didn't take long to inject the cortisone though. It still hurts off and on and I believe if it had been repaired, I would be in less pain. It was hard to figure the logic since it was the same orthopedic practice that put me back together after a car wreck 10 years earlier.

something you haven’t heard before but shoulder rehab is far and above the most painful of all. I’ve had 3 shoulder surgeries, comparatively minor… esp. to yours and after the first rehab I learned to save my pain meds for P. T. I’ve had a lot of broken bones and torn this and that and I’m a hardworking dedicated rehabber with a high pain tolerance. I’ve cried more than once in shoulder P. T.

Be patient, do everything your therapist tells you to and nothing more is my advice.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Oh another tip!

Aug 20, 2022, 8:19 PM

Save you heavy duty drugs to take before P.T.!

THIS is some very good advice. As a 'veteran" of several

Aug 21, 2022, 7:32 AM [ in reply to I hope I’m not telling you ]

surgeries myself, including 3 rotator cuffs (they had to go back in and scramble scar tissue on my left shoulder, it actually seized up during rehab), shoulder surgery is a beyotch from the rehab end. Although, total replacement may not be as bad as actual rotator cuff. My mom had shoulder replacement at age 82, and did very well in rehab. (But, my mom was a tough country woman of the Greatest Generation!)

I admit, I too shed some tears in rehab from shoulder surgery. They want that arm to go places it does NOT want to go, and they will make it go there.

Good luck, and my BEST advice, as a man who loves golf, do NOT rush this rehab, if you get yourself out on a golf course before your shoulder is ready, you could undo everything the surgeons have done. That's hard news for an avid golfer to hear, but four months may actually be a little short.

Everyone is different as you can see in the responses. I had a shoulder replacement around 5 or 6 years ago by a Clemson Chem E grad (right shoulder and I'm right handed). I do not think it was over 2 months before getting back to golf. I only went to rehab three times - the therapist gaveme the exercises and some basic equipment. She recognized that I could handle all of the exercises by myself rather than having to come in basically for supervision to make sure I did the right exercises the right way. The only reason for the PT return visit was to measure the range of motion improvements. I followed the instructions diligently and had a steady improvement in all of the exercises.

The Dr told me that the golf motion is typically not a problem for shoulder replacement because it's a downward stroke. However, he said some tennis players had problems because tennis sometimes uses an overhand stroke which is a problem for some.

There have been no problems with the shoulder, but it's only a matter of time before the left has to be replaced, and probably the knees.

Again, everyone is different and I guess I was lucky to not have any problems and a quick recovery. I hope your recovery is quick and relatively pain free.

I had both shoulders replaced 10 & 12 years ago. The most important thing is do EXACTLY what the therapist says - no more no less. Slept in a chair for several weeks. Went to a Clemson football game 2 weeks after surgery. I had very little pain & took no pain killers when I got home. Much easier than what I understand rotator cuff surgery is. Good lick & mind your therapist.

But haven’t yet. Doc told me 4 months as well. Maybe we had the same surgeon. Still doing PT, and strength training on my own. Btw I’m right handed and surgery was on left shoulder.

Don’t know, but what I do know is if the doc asks if it hurts, the answer is always ‘very badly.’ Ya gotta stock up!

Re: I had my left shoulder repaired on May 23rd,

Aug 20, 2022, 11:49 PM

there was a full tear of my supraspinatus tendon. I am sure that my golf swing helped tear it in the first place. I am not yet swinging clubs but I think in another Month or two I will be able to just fine. I probably won't anyway until 6 months at the earliest because I don't want to retear it. Just be sure to go to PT and listen to what they tell you.

I'm going to have to get the right side done too so I might as well get it over with and go from there. Good Luck.

Only Tip I can give you is cry a lot, it doesn't help, but nothing else does either! My left shoulder has been torn for 9 years, I play golf twice a week, but I will not get it fixed, because the pain of the surgery is so much worse than the pain of the injury. It took me 7 months to heal from the first one I had done..
